Somewhat recently attributed to Richard Allestree, The Whole Duty of Man was first published in 1658, anonymously, expounded on Anglican traditions, in a Protestant devotional form. This includes sections that adopt a sermon-like tone, as well as several sections of prayers. Richard Allestree was an English Royalist churchman, imprisoned briefly for his views. He published several collections of sermons, and served as provost of Eton College. Provenance: large bookplate indicates this was a gift from Henry Hoare, presumably the English banker of the same name. The name Mary Woolridge is handwritten on the decorative half-title, with the date July 10, 1775. FAIR condition, LACKING the aforementioned contents pages at the end.
