Ink owners name, 'Elizabeth Leach 1789' to the top of the title-page. Early half-calf binding with good margins but a trifle shortened in length just cropping the very top edge of the signature. A nice tight example of the very scarce first edition in a worn but intact early period binding. All the 12 plates are present. The first plate, January, has been neatly repaired around the margins but all images are complete. The title-page and contents pages are affected by a damp stain which fades by the first page of the text but is discernable in the first plates and contents section. Contemporary sheep newly rebacked, single pin-hole worm trace in the lower corner of the first 29 leaves, the same in the upper corner of the last 94 leaves, the final few leaves with a fine trace of worming in the fore-edge margin, occasional foxing, overall a very good copy, the worming quite unobtrusive. *With this ink inscription on the front paste-down - 'The Gift of Mrs. Wilkinson of Plas Grono to Mary Peters of Minera July Anno Domini 1804'. The donor was most likely the wife of JOHN WILKINSON (1728 - 1808), a pioneer of the modern, mechanized iron trade. He was born at Clifton, Cumbria, in 1728, educated at the Dissenting Academy of Caleb Rotherham at Kendal and worked with his father Isaac, in the family iron-works, from c.1748.
