Jacket is fine, bright and clean but for a 1"" gently closed corner tear that has been professionally repaired by archival tissue internally, a very small V chip to top spine corner, and a minor 1/2""wide discoloration smudge to the lower outside corner; else it looks quite attractive in its Mylar cover. Scarce in a jacket this fine.

This is a very good copy of the Second Printing of the First English edition in an unclipped dust jacket that is very lightly edge-chipped with fractional loss at the spine head. The contents are fine.

The jacket is increasingly elusive thus, not only unfaded, with bright yellow and red hues on both the front face and spine, but also complete except for a neatly price-clipped lower front flap. The jacket has excellent shelf presentation and shows only mild soiling and light shelf wear to extremities. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. Very Good. 8vo (272 pages, with frontispiece [Walter Stoneman photo of the author]and four internal photographs). A very good leatherbound copy of the Second Printing of the First English edition (dated December 1943) rebound in 3/4-navy blue leather over the original blue cloth boards, gilt lettered on the spine in an exact replica of the original lettering, with gilded top edge. There is rubbing to the spine, and interlocking cup stains on the cloth of the rear board. The front hinge is beginning to give but the contents are fine. An elaborate presentation bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown: “With Compliments of the Chairman and the Board of Directors of the General Fire Appliance Company Limited, 11 Waterloo Place.” Strikingly similar to the manner and style in which Winston Churchill had his books leatherbound for presentation.

The British first editions are visually striking, but were printed on cheap wartime paper, bound in coarse cloth, and wrapped in bright, fragile dust jackets. They proved highly susceptible to spotting, soiling, and fading, so the passage of time has been hard on most surviving first editions. Assembling jacketed first printing sets has been challenging.
