The LONDON VOCABULARY, English and Latin: Put into a New Method, proper to Acquaint the Learner with Things as well as pure Latin Words. Adorned with Twenty-six Pictures. For the Use of Schools, Printed for J. F. and C. Rivington, T. Caslon, S Crowder, T Longman, B. Law, E. Johnston, J. Wallis and S. Blandon, London, 1777, viii, 124 pages, bound in full leather with heavy string, missing some of the spine with obvious wear to the spine and covers and edges, missing any prelims as the first page present is the title page. Of the 26 illustrations, four have been hand-colored. All in all, perhaps a poor copy (due to the binding only) with vg contents.

Rees 1802 Twenty-second edition of this popular grammar book, which was reprinted up until 1828. While it is thought that the first edition was likely published in London in 1711, the earliest edition ESTC notes is the third edition (1713) with holdings of only three copies, all in the U.K. All early editions are scarce, with ESTC recording fewer than seven copies of each. Contemporary sheep recently rebacked in calf with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Twelvemo. Title-page with woodcut vignette, initial letters, headpieces, and twenty-five woodcut illustrations. Text printed in two columns, with English on the right and Latin on the left. Binding extremities somewhat worn. Gutter margins of endpapers repaired with cloth tape. Light foxing, margins slightly shaved, just barely touching running headlines of a few leaves. Longman [et al], 1791. 16mo, pp. viii, 123, [1]; 26 woodcuts in the text; original brown buckram; previous owner's name in ink on upper cover and front pastedown (with a date of July 1794), moderate wear and some relatively minor staining; a good, sound copy in an early original cloth binding, often found on textbooks of the last half of the 18th century. A popular school text by the surmaster of St. Paul's School who also compiled an English grammar. The London Vocabulary went through many editions in both England and America, where it was titled the Philadelphia Vocabulary. It is, essentially, an abridgement of Jan Amos Komensky's Orbis Pictura.

(5 7/8 x 3 5/8"). viii, 123, [1] (ads) pp. Contemporary brown burlap, flat spine. With allegorical vignette on title page and 25 half-page woodcuts illustrating items from the vocabulary lists. Pastedowns with traces of book label removal. ◆Spine slightly cocked, short split to cloth on rear joint, a little fraying at ends of spine, but the insubstantial binding surprisingly solid. Two small stains to each pastedown (where labels removed), title page lightly browned, leaves a shade less than bright (due to paper quality), other minor imperfections, but an excellent copy internally, clean and fresh with comfortable margins. All in all, remarkably well preserved. First issued around 1711, this is the best-selling work of James Greenwood (1683?-1737), an influential grammarian and a proponent of women's education.
