A lifelong wag and practical joker, Derby (1823-61) was a West Point graduate serving with the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers assigned in San Francisco and San Diego during the 1850s. These burlesques of the local citizenry, written under the guise of his pseudonyms "John Phoenix" and "John P. Squibob," were the state's first published humor. Octavo. Original yellow cloth binding, with pictorial black, red, and gilt stamping. Internally crisp and clean. The spine is lightly faded; otherwise near fine.
