There is some very minor foxing at bottom right. Folded once for mailing. Fine. <p>Farrar writes to author John Hyde Preston referring to Preston's book "A Gentleman Rebel: The Exploits of Anthony Wayne" [Farrar & Rinehart, 1930]. "I am glad to know that the book is coming along nicely". He asks Preston to send him the manuscript at Doubleday before a proposed meeting between the two men.<p>John C. Farrar [1896-1974] was an American editor and publisher. After editing The Bookman up to its 1927 purchase by Seward Collins, Farrar worked for two years at Doubleday, Doran and Company. A tight, attractive first edition in the rarely seen dust jacket -- plus a choice autograph addition: Tipped at the top of the front flyleaf is a 5" X 2½" slip bearing a handsome "Very sincerely / Mary Roberts Rinehart" signed large and bold in blue fountain pen ink, with a typed date below of April 24, 1922. Fine. Light-hearted World War One doughboy fiction about (to cite rear jacket panel) "the adventures that befell Sergeant Gray of Headquarters Troops...." Tough to find such an attractive copy and in the jacket.

Exceptionally tight and bright first edition of this "Murray Hill Mystery" whose "ingredients are a Maine background, a big house, a bewildered and bedeviled girl, a helpful neighbor and, more importantly, the chef...." Nice autograph addition: Tipped by one edge opposite half-title page is a heavy stock 7¼" X 4" envelope, cancelled in Washington, DC on 21 November 1927, boldly addressed to a Wisconsin address in Rinehart's distinctive handwriting in black ink. NOT signed by her, but a handsome sample of her handwriting and if you tip up the envelope on its verso can be seen her imprinted name and Washington, DC residential address,
