This is a book of Roman history which belonged to John Baker Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield (1735-1821). Sheffield was a notable English and Irish politician, perhaps best remembered in the literary world as a friend and editor of Edward Gibbon, the English historian whose Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire remains the definitive text on the subject. Among other contributions, Sheffield compiled Gibbon's letters and diaries after Gibbon's passing into Memoirs of My Life and Writings, one of the first examples of a modern autobiography. Volume 1 is in essentially fine condition, apart from some very minimal foxing. Text unmarked and binding quite secure. Volume 2 has a small hole in the title page and penetrating as far as page 12, and on the blank rear free endpaper. Otherwise, only mild occasional foxing, unmarked text, and secure binding. Overall, this pair of volumes is in very nice condition. A two-volume anthology of Gibbons' lectures, essays, and correspondence. Most selections are in English, but a substantial amount is in French. Both volumes measure approx. 11.2" x 8.75

Bound in contemporsry half mottled calf over marbled boards, marbled end papers, the armorial bookplates of Moncure Biddle front paste downs. Very Good, Vol. I missing volume label, Vol. II missing title label, bookplate in Vol. II partially removed, wear at joints and spine ends. With one sheet handwritten partial translation from French to English of Gibbon's letter to Mons. Deverdun dated 20 May 1783 laid in at p. 570 Vol. I, where the letter is printed in French. No attribution to the letter, although given the provenance of the Moncure Biddle bookplate, likely in the hand of John Lord Sheffield.
