Numerous line illustrations throughout. Bumping to cloth extremities. Fine. Beginning with 'An Apparition of her lover', and ending with 'The Zouave used to war and battle', Edward's Gorey's alphabet tracks through the letters with increasingly depressing illustrations and poetry. This book was first published in the United States under the alternative title 'The Fatal Lozenge'.

Small (5.75" x 4.5") hardcover has bright pink boards decorated with one of Gorey's wonderfully macabre scenes, including the standard dead body & skeleton & haunted lady/curious child.
