Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering remains bright and clear. Book has slight forward lean.

With 170 sketches, including nineteen colour illustrations by William Hutton Riddell on sixteen plates, and twenty one monochrome plates by Chapman himself, collated and complete. With a focus on birds and fish, Chapman shares his observations of the animals, flora, and fauna that live in these inhospitable areas. The Sunderland-born naturalist and hunter contributed towards saving the Spanish Ibex from extinction, and helped establish the first game reserve in South Africa.
