He left New York City on the steamer Crescent City in March 1849, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, took the brig Sylph to San Francisco, and arrived in late July. During his stay in California, he mined at Hawkins' Bar and Sullivan's Creek between August 1849 and March 1850; the Mariposa mines from April to July 1850; Horse Shoe Bar on the American River from May to September 1851; and Secret Ravine from October to June 1852. Other locations mined by Gardiner from 1852 until his return home in 1857 included Swett's Bar, Indian Bar, Chambers' Bar, and Belvidere Flat. "If those who read Howard Gardiner's account of his experiences in California between 1849 and 1857 will thereafter return to this summary survey, they will be impressed with the immense solidity of his narrative, and the large extent of the canvas on which he has worked. I think it is quite clear that nothing in the existing literature compares with his reminiscences." - Dale Morgan. In addition to reprinting Gardiner's work, Morgan compiled a substantial introduction consisting of a bibliographic essay on the northern mines and correspondence concerning the original publication of the reminiscences.
