FIRST GERMAN TRANSLATION. 8vo, 174 x 100 mms.,[xii], 420, later half calf, marbled boards, black leather label; joins worn and slightly tender, top and base of spine chipped, corners worn, with Ex Libris of Dr Gero Wildt on the verso of the title-page. David Hume described Adam Ferguson (1723–1816) as a "Man of Sense, knowledge, Taste, Elegance, & Morals," and when Ferguson settled himself in Edinburgh when he about 40, he was surrounded by like-minded intellectuals. After publishing his most imporant and influential An Essay on the History of Civil Society in 1767, and followed this up in 1769 with his classroom text book, The Institutes of Moral Philosophy for the Use of Students in the College of Edinburgh. This German translation is by Chrisopher Garve (1742 - 1798), who also traslated Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations.

Two issues of the first part appeared in 1787, one as above in 12mo (ESTC t185061), and the other 8vo (t081756); ESTC on-line locates three copies of this 12mo edition, t185061, in British libraries (O, Lsn, LEu) and two in United States libraries (RNR, TxU). For the second part (n018147), ESTC locates the reference copy only (IU) in the United States and two copies in British libraries (Lnat, Lsn).

Lyon, Chez les Freres Perisse..., 1780. 12mo, pp. [iv], c, 375 [376 Permission], contemporary tree sheepskin, spine gilt in compartments, morocco label; base of spine chipped, but a very good copy, with the rectangular book ticket of J. Crosilhes, Libraire, of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, "Ou l'on trouve un assortiment de Livres classiques et autres bons Ouvrages...." Cardinal Melchior de Polignac (1661 - 1742) spent his early career as a diplomat for France before being made Archbishop of Auch in 1726. He died before his refutation of Lucretius could be published. It was first published in 1748.

Shortly after David Hume died 25 August 1776, Smith described Hume in a letter to William Strahan, the publisher, that "Upon the whole, I have always considered him, both in his lifetime and since his death, as approaching as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human frailty will permit." This assessment, published in 1777, in an edition of Hume's My Own Life, not only led to further attacks on Hume but on the blameless and cautious Smith, who found himself mired in obloquy for his friendship, not unlike a certain controversy respecting a university building in Edinburgh no longer name The David Hume Tower. Burdon (1764 - 1818) made a name for himself in the early 19th century as a prolific author and commentator on social and political events. Although he had published works exhibiting some philosophical inclinations, this was his first attempt at a more comprehensive exposition of philosophical ideas. His purpose is, as he puts in the Preface, "to lessen the effect of prejudice and diffuse the comforts of society." His topics here are "Liberality of Sentiment," "Human Inconsistencies," "The Imagination," "Characters," "The Feelings," "Education," "Liberty and Necessity," and "Political OEconomy."… Leer más

Hadley on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume; an indifferent set. Baxter first published a work under this title in a small quarto of 64 pages Edinburgh in 1738. This "translation" is more of a new work than a strict translation. He revised and enlarged the Latin version for a new edition in 1746 and published a second edition of the above work in 1745, and further editions followed in 1754 and 1765. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [ii], xii, 304, pp. 305 - 311 misnumbering 283 - 289 [290 = 312 blank], contemporary calf; contemporary identification of Hurd as author on title-page; binding worn and rubbed, rear joint holding by one cord. The misnumbered pages at the end contain an appendix, in which Hurd attacks David Hume's recently-published Tudor section of his History of England . Writing to William Mason shortly after the work was published, Hurd commented, "Whatever fate attends the Dialogues, I have so much of the author in me as to be perfectly satisfied with them myself. If there be a grain of humour in them, it depends solely on my pretending, not seriously intending to pass them on the courteous reader for originals." Eddy 21.

A Londres, 1777. 4 volumes. 8vo, 206 x 120 mms., pp. [iv], 484; [ii], xx, 513 [ 514 - 515 Approbation and Privilege, 516 blank]; xxviii, 586; xiv, 416, including half-title in each volume, attractively bound in full contemporary tree calf, gilt tooled borders on covers, spines richly gilt in compartments with oval sunburst motif, red and green morocco labels, marbled end-papers. A fine and attractive set, A bookplate loosely inserted in volume 4 claims "From Croom Court/ Roger Payne binder/ 1738 - 97 used a tool/ used in this binding." Helvetius (1715 - 1771) is probably best-known for his De l'Esprit (1758) and its successor De l'Homme (1772). Although the imprint claims London for the place of publication, it is clearly a French, and probably, Parisian printing. De l'Esprit had been condemned by the French parliament soon after it was published and was burnt, so Helvetius was clearly still considered dangerous to the structure of the state in 1777. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. [ii], ii, 72, disbound. This appears to be the author's only publication and is a meditation in the style of Marcus Aurelius, whom he alludes to or quotes several times. LIVII. 1767. 12mo, 182 x 110 mms., pp. [iv], xii, 416, engraved portrait of Hume between half-title and title-page, original (or contemporary) marbled wrappers, entirely uncut, hand written paper label on spine; extremities worn and frayed, joints a little soft, but a copy that would please most aficionados of books in their "as issued" state, straight from the printers. Hume's works were first translated into French in 1754, Discourse Politiques, which was followed by four other volumes, all translated by Eleazar de Mauvillon. The translation here is by J. A. "Harris's penultimate book, Philosophical Arrangements (1775), reveals more clearly than any other that the intellectual foundations of his whole career as a writer lie in a series of dialectical relationships between the past and the present, and between two broadly opposed ways of thinking" (Clive Probyn, in his biography of Harris, The Social Humanist [1991]).

The renowned alchemist Oswald Croll or Crollius (1563-1609) was "a professor of medicine at the University of Marburg in Hesse, Germany. A strong proponent of alchemy and using chemistry in medicine, he was heavily involved in writing books and influencing thinkers of his day towards viewing chemistry and alchemy as two separate fields. … Croll received his doctorate in medicine in 1582 at Marburg, then continued studies at Heidelberg, Strasburg, and Geneva. After working as a tutor, he arrived in Prague in 1597. He remained there for two years, and again from 1602 until his death. There, through Rudolf II, he came into contact with other alchemical writers such as Edward Kelley" (Wikipedia).
