London: Printed for W. Flexney..., 1770. 3 volumes. 8vo, pp. viii, lxxx, 116; [ii], vii [viii blank], 192; [ii], 182, including half-title in volume 1, contemporary calf; spines rubbed and dried, covers detached. With the armorial "Mirehouse" bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume; possibly from the library of James Spedding (1808–1881), literary editor and biographer, born at Mirehouse in Cumberland. Thanks to the scholarship of H. F. Brooks, the poetry of Oldham (1653–1683) has enjoyed something of a rehabilitation since 1987 when Brooks and R. Selden published a critical edition of his poems. The editor of these volumes, Edward Thompson (1738?–1786) was a naval officer and author; his early publications, The Demi-Rep (1756) and The Meretriciad (1763), were well received, and in the same year that he published the above edition of Oldham, he re-published those two pieces along with some others in The Court of Cupid. Copies are fairly plentiful… Leer más

Descripción:
No place no publisher 1862. An unrecorded broadside, 224 x 180 mms., printed on recto only, on laid paper, dated 11 October 1862; a watermark design is partly visible, with geometrical and curvilinear lines, but no watermark year. Inner edge uneven, two small holes in top margin. The poem is about the statue of the inventor Samuel Crompton (1753 - 1827), inventor of the spinning mule, in Bolton, Lancashire, which was created by the Scottish sculptor William Calder Marshall (1813-1894). The statue was unveiled in September 1862. From the date printed in the lower left corner, it would seem this poem was either written or published or both just days after the unveiling of the statue, on October 11, 1862. The poem reads much as if it were written by the creator of the statue of Samuel Crompton in Nelson Square in Bolton. In other words, as if written by William Calder Marshall. It is a poem of pride -- and humility -- plus bitterness, bitterness apparently against a "grandchild" of… Leer más

London: Printed for G. and W. B. Whittaker..., 1827. 8vo (in 4s), 172 x 98 mms., pp. [ii], 200 [201 notice from author, 202 Errata], contemporary hard grain morocco, title in gilt on spine; ex-library bookplate of County Borough of Warrington Municipal Library on front paste-down end-paper. The Unitarian minister and poet Jacob Brettell (1793–1862) published The Country Minister in 1821, with a revised edition in 1825. The European Magazine, and London Review of the 1821 first edition opened its review with these honeyed words: "It has not very recently been our good fortune to open a more assuming, yet highly gratifying work, than the little volume now before us; and we do commence, therefore, what critical etiquette usually reserves for it's [sic] bonne bouche at the close by warmly recommending it." Reviewing the second part in 1825, The Monthly Repository of Theology and General Literature commented, "The readers of Mr. Brettell's former poems will receive with… Leer más

London: John Murray..., 1819. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo, 173 x 98 mms., pp. [iv] [3] - 119 [120 colophon], including half-title, uncut, newly rebound in boards, paper label on spine. A very good copy, with a small circular cipher bookplate on the front paste-down end-paper. , Giovanni Battista Casti (1724 - 1803) published the poetical allegory Gli Animali Parlanti in 1802, having spent eight years i preparing it. The translation by Rose (1775 - 1843) is a free one with several additions by Rose. Rose also translated Ariosto's Orlando Furioso. "This work constitutes his chief claim to critical attention. The original poem is a burlesque telling of a parliament of talking animals who elect a lion as king but fall into dispute and civil war after his death. In Rose's version, each of the seven cantos is prefaced by an address to a dedicatee. These addresses, with their far-fetched rhymes and quirky rhythms, are in some ways the most engaging sections of the work"… Leer más

Leeds. John Cross..., 1834. FIRST EDITION. Tall 8vo, 223 x 132 mms., pp. vi [vii Index, viii blank], 112, original cloth, paper label (faded), on spine; corners worn, spine snagged, but a good copy with the contemporary ownership inscription "J. Ward/ Surgeon" on the top margin of the title-page. Poor, and unable to obtain funds to complete his medical training, Wilson has, as he asserts in the Preface, "followed the example of the author of Rasselas, and written a book merely for the sake of obtaining a little gold." He alludes to "subscribers," whom he thanks, so the previous owner might have been one of the subscribers, as Wilson did succeed with his medical studies and was "a respectable medical practitioner in Leeds, and one of the surgeons to the House of Recovery in that area" (The poets of Yorkshire, commenced by W.C. Newsam, by William Cartwright Newsam, 1845).

ESTC T63116 describes this as "A reissue of the fifth edition, with a half-title, a different title-page and sig. F7 a cancel," but does not mention that this is the first appearance of the poem, "A True Tale," addressed to Mr. Leake, i. e., James Leake, the brother-in-law of the printer Samuel Richardson who printed editions two to seven. "A True Tale" appears here as a result of a proposal of marriage that Mrs. Chandler received in 1741 when she was 54. She refused him and turned the episode into a poem, noting "Fourscore long Miles, to buy a crooked Wife!/ Old too! I thought the oddest thing in Life...." A fine copy. Garth published The Dispensary in 1699, and as the website for The Royal College of Physicians notes, " his satirical poem in six cantos, mocking some of the key protagonists in the dispute. The poem begins with a description of the newly constructed college building on Warwick Lane, with its striking 'Dome, Majestick to the Sight…' But within its walls the fellows and members are disunited and the God Sloth has taken up residence. He is awakened from his slumbers by the sound of the construction of the dispensary, so sends his servant Phantom to summon the Goddess Envy. Tall 8vo, 196 x 125 mms., pp. [vi], 72, including half-title, printed on fine paper, uncut, original boards; spine defective, with loss of paper, boards still attached but loose. Inscribed on half-title, "John Hope Esqr/ From the Author." There are several John Hopes who might have received this from Newbery, but in this case, I don't think it is the military officer, Sir John Hope (1765 - 1836). I am, however, happy to be proved wrong. The publisher Francis Newbery (1743 - 1818) started his life selling patent medicines, but turned to publishing on the death of his father, John Newbery (1713 - 1767). He was a gifted musician, keen on the violin and amateur theatricals, and his ambitions there were not helped by Samuel Johnson's remark "telling him that he had better give his fiddle to the first beggar-man he met, on the grounds that the time required for practice interfered with professional… Leer más

A very good copy, with the faint autograph "[?W H] Gage" on the top margin of the title-page. Captain Gage and Lady Gage appear in the list of subscribers. The work is dedicated to Lady Mary Pelham, who is probably the Lady Pelham who appears in the list of subscribers. A Captain Gage and a Lady Gage appear in the list of subscribers as well. No doubt this copy belonged to Sir William Hall Gage (1777-1864), who was Captain by 1796, and was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1821. There is a record of Gage's uncle and namesake, William Hall Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage (1717/18-1791), being at the house of Frances Burney with John Delap on the same day, and having a "Great Dinner" at night, on June 20, 1779; the viscount was, like Delap, a resident of Lewes in Sussex, which is also the… Leer más

Oxford: Printed by T. Combe...; Sold by J. G. and J. Rivington...[inter alia], 1840. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo, 205 x 133 mms., pp. 144, contemporary boards, later reback; binding slightly worn, but a very good copy, with the bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox on the front paste-down end-paper, and an ink inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper, "Ex libris/ P. H. Bossier/ Coll: Exon:/ Oct 19th/ 1843." Hawker (1803 - 1875) was an Anglican priest, noted for his determination to give Christian burials to seaman who died in shipwrecks.
