London, George Humble,, c. 1627. Copper engraving, 8.5 x 12.3 cms, modern hand-colour, English text on verso; the sheet has been trimmed down, affecting the letterpress on the back but not the engraved area of the map. From an edition of the pocket atlas which is often referred to as the ‘minature Speed’: maps by Pieter van den Keere illustrated an abridged, small-format edition of Speed’s text, which Humble appears to have printed to coincide with editions of the larger atlas. Continental pocket atlases such as the ‘Epitome’ of Ortelius’ ‘Theatrum’, and Mercator’s ‘Atlas Minor’ worked in much the same way. Map

London, 1830. Engraved folding map, 98 x 68 cm, dissected into 25 panels and laid on linen, original hand colour, some wear to fold intersections, annotated in ink in an early hand, folding into worn slipcase with printed publisher’s label on the cover. Ownership signature of Arnold Mello, dated 1831, to verso of the map and to slipcase label. The map has been heavily annotated over a considerable period of time. The most conspicuous additions are the railways: ‘all since 1830’. Some of the statistical tables at the foot have been expanded and updated to include information from the 1841 census; there is a reference to Stephenson’s ‘iron tubular bridge’ across the Menai Strait, opened on 5 March 1850, and there is also a reference to ‘Smith Dorien’ as Lord Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly, a title he inherited from his uncle in 1872. The map seems to have had a working life spanning at least forty years. Map

Edinburgh, c. 1845. Engraved folding map, sheet size 84.5 x 59 cm, dissected into 36 panels and laid on linen, original hand-colour in outline, somewhat soiled and dusty; folding into publisher’s green calf covers, handsomely tooled in gilt and blind, foot of spine renewed; embossed bookseller’s ticket to front pastedown. This edition was published c. 1845, featuring lines such as the Maryport & Carlisle Railway, which was completed in that year (although map publishers sometimes pre-empted reality in order to keep their maps current for as long as possible). Lizars was Edinburgh based and his map includes southern Scotland, showing early Scottish lines such as the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway (completed 1841). The Great North British Railway is described as ‘proposed’: established in 1844, the line opened in 1846, which confirms the likely window of publication. Amsterdam, 1654. Copper engraving, 41.5 x 52.5 cms, with original hand-colour, Latin text on verso. Liddesdale, in the Scottish borders. Blaeu's Scottish atlas, first published in 1654, was the first truly detailed printed survey of the country. It relied heavily on manuscript maps prepared at the turn of the 17th century by Timothy Pont which had never previously been published, with some additional material provided by Robert Gordon of Straloch and others, all saved for posterity and put into the hands of Blaeu by his local correspondent Sir John Scot of Scotstarvit (as a map publisher, Blaeu carefully cultivated men in every country who could provide him with accurate cartographic information). This detailed regional mapping meant that, at a stroke, Scotland had become one of the best mapped countries in 17th century Europe. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Bl 49. Map

London, 1809. Engraved cartographic table-game, 53 x 66 cm, dissected into 18 panels and laid on linen, original hand colour, two columns of rules and town descriptions to left and right margins; folding into publisher’s card slipcase, worn, printed label to upper cover. Most games of this nature were educational, and in this case players learn by ‘visiting’ towns and cities as they race around the board. There are strong similarities with Wallis’ ‘Tour through England and Wales’ which appeared in 1794, although players follow a different route and there is considerable variation in stops (which here include Eddystone Lighthouse, off the coast). There is a marked absence of snakes or ladders, which may have been considered too frivolous, and the only forfeits are missed turns. The Dartons were Quakers (William Darton senior joined the Society of Friends in 1777), which occasionally shows in the game. Any player landing on Pontefract misses a turn ‘to walk to the… Leer más

Engraved cartographic table-game, 51.5 x 66 cm, dissected into 16 panels and laid on linen, original hand colour, two columns of rules and town descriptions to left and right margins, lightly finger- and dust-soiled, a few marks and spots, some section edges a little creased and edge-frayed; folding into publisher’s card slipcase, heavily worn, printed label to upper cover.The elder John Wallis (c. 1745-1818) recovered from bankruptcy to become one of the major publishers of children’s games and puzzles. Most were educational, and in this case players learn by ‘visiting’ towns and cities as they race around the board. For example, Dorchester is ‘the county town famous for its fine strong beer and for its superb county gaol’ (then relatively new, and approved by prison reformer John Howard). Liverpool, 1974. Pictorial map of Liverpool, sheet size 46 x 40.5 cm, printed in tones of green on green paper, blank verso; folding into a souvenir record-sleeve style pack (one or two small creases, laminate not extending fully to the top and right hand edges) which comprises: ‘Nothing to get hung up about’, a 30 page short history of the Beatles by Mike Evans; a discography (slightly creased); three posters (timeline, tours and an image of the band with long hair); a bookmark, 4 black and white postcards and an official Beatles Fan Club letter. By 1974 the band had broken up, but on our map they are locked in 1968 - in the style of the animated film ‘Yellow Submarine’: Old Fred makes a guest appearance, hand in hand with the Chief Blue Meanie, and the Yellow Submarine itself bobs on the Mersey. London, 1838. Lithographed folding map, 109.5 x 43.5 cms, dissected into 28 panels, original hand colour in outline; folding into original green pebble-cloth covers, lettered direct, rebacked, with advertisements for Cheffins’ lithographic printing office and other maps by the same publisher on the pastedown and panel facing the pastedown. Minor wear and signs of use to both map and covers. The Grand Junction Railway opened in 1837 and ran north from Birmingham to join the Liverpool and Manchester Railway at Newton (the first steam railway junction). The engraved date on our map is January 1st 1838. As an assistant to George Stephenson, Cheffins (1807-1861) prepared many of the original plans and sections for the Grand Junction c. 1831-33. He then set up his own cartographic and drawing business, working as a surveyor on numerous early railway projects. Returning once more to the Grand Junction, this appears to be his first commercially published map, issued a few months after the line opened. Map

Manchester, Bradshaw &: Blacklock, 1845. Engraved folding map, 112.5 x 86.5 cm, dissected into 30 panels and laid on linen, original hand colour, some light staining and discolouration, edged in red silk, folding into brown cloth covers, rebacked, worn Bradford bookseller’s ticket to front pastedown. The colour denotes county boundaries and railways built and under construction. The map was published in October 1845 as Railway Mania neared its peak: in 1846 272 Acts of Parliament setting up new railway companies were passed, with the proposed routes totaling 9,500 miles, a third of which were never built. Bradshaw’s railway maps and timetables (in both cases the first national examples of their kind, where railways were the main focus) had been published since 1839. Bradshaw’s Railway Gazette appeared weekly from July 1845, giving updates to train services and advertising other publications such as this map. Map

Paris, Paul André: Basset, 1824. Copper engraving, 79.5 x 55 cm, original hand colour in outline, dissected into 36 panels and laid on linen, folding into slipcase, which has split along one edge and repaired with linen; title ‘England’ inked to slipcase and verso of the map. Hérisson (1759-1816) was a pupil of Rigobert Bonne, active from the late 1770s, who seems to have been most prolific as a map-maker during the First Empire; many of his maps continued to be reissued posthumously, as here. Edinburgh, c. 1909. Folding lithographed map, 95 x 95 cm, dissected into 32 panels and laid on linen, folding into slightly rubbed publisher’s blue cloth covers; dated June 1909 at the foot of the advertisement on the pastedown. On a scroll in the lower left of the map, the GWR’s system is described as ‘adequately equipped for the conveyance of merchandise, mineral and live stock traffic’. The map illustrates how the GWR connects resources such as coal fields, china clay and salt works with the rest of the country and the major ports. Ownership signatures of W.Park(?) to cover and pastedown; another owner, EWH Powell, is named in block capitals. Map

Edinburgh, c. 1830. 4 map-sheets joined, in total 103.5 x 135 cm, engraved by Edwin Butterworth, original hand colour delineating county boundaries, dissected into 20 panels and laid on linen; dusty and with scattered ink stains and some light waterstaining. Engraved in 1826 for Thomson’s Atlas of Scotland (published in full in 1832). John Thomson had made his fortune through his extremely successful 'New General Atlas' , but in the 1820s he bankrupted himself, twice (in the process of creating his large-scale 'Atlas of Scotland' in a burst of patriotic pride) and he disappeared from the historical record. Thomson's maps are characteristic of the Edinburgh school of cartography which flourished at the beginning of the nineteenth-century and is noted for its clarity and elegance; other exponents include John Cary and John Pinkerton. Nuremberg, 1746. Copper engraving, 26 x 20.5 cm, engraved by Johann Michael Seligmann after Edwards, original hand colour, blank verso. Edwards was gifted amateur scientist and ornitholiogist. His four volume work ‘A Natural History Of Uncommon Birds and of some other Rare and Undescribed Animals’ was published between 1743 and 1751, and contains over 200 outstanding plates, etched by Edwards himself. This map of the British Isles and northwestern Europe charts Edwards's travels between 1716 and 1730 and features male and female stag beetles from Borneo, the bill of an Egyptian Ibis and a Jamaican Hummingbird. Shirley explains that Edwards' work ‘A Natural History Of Uncommon Birds’ was translated into French and German editions, both published by Seligmann, but the adds ‘these editions do not contain (as far as I have been able to discern) the British Isles map ...’ This is clearly not the case, but it is possible that this curious map was not included in all… Leer más

Leipzig, c. 1750. Copper engraving, 16 x 27 cm, original hand colour, margins a little dusty, blank verso. The cartouche is dominated by the Hanoverian coat of arms, and the legend on the right lists counties and regions of the British Isles identified with numbers and abbreviations on the map. Paris, Dé: pô, 1757. Copper engraving, 59 x 44 cm, black and white, margins a trifle dusty, blank verso. Chart covering the Channel islands and the neighbouring coasts of Brittany and Normandy. Jacques Nicolas Bellin the elder (1703-1772) was first chief hydrographic engineer of the "Dépôt des cartes, plans et journaux du Ministère de la Marine," charged early in the reign of Louis XV with mapping the coasts of France first and then the rest of the world. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London. Map

London, John Sudbury and George Humble, 1616. Copper engraving, 38.5 x 51.5 cm, inset view of Galway, modern hand colour, nicks and tears to lower margin with some loss (not affecting engraved area), closed centrefold split, old paper repairs on verso, a couple of small stains in the lower margin, English text on verso. The plan of Galway is the earliest printed map of the city, and Speed was also the first to include individual maps of the four Irish provinces in an atlas of the British Isles. His ‘Theatre’ was carefully constructed to illustrate his ‘History’ and to support a particular pro-Stuart view of British identity, of which Ireland had become an integral part. Decorative coats of arms of distinguished local figures from the past, historical notes and battle scenes on his English county maps contributed towards the same goal, being carefully chosen to contrast the anarchy and upheavals of the past with the peace and prosperity of the Tudor and Stuart present. Grimsby & London: Taylor & Francis, 1883. Sheet size 55.5 x 44 cm, map 46 x 36 cm, printed in colours, inset of a Scotch Herring lugger, old ink stamp to upper margin, blank verso, laid on archival tissue, small area of marginal loss to left hand corners and lower margin. Published in the ‘Piscatorial Atlas of the North Sea, English and George’s Channels’, a series of 50 lavishly chromolithographed charts record the distribution – spawning grounds and abundance – of the major edible species of fish, shellfish and crustacea caught in the North Sea and off the coasts of the British Isles. There are insets showing the fish themselves, and the vessels and gear used to catch them, with a table of detailed information covering time of spawning, number of eggs, when and how caught, bait and food, size and weight, ‘quality’, when in season and other remarks, the product of a decade or more of reports and correspondence with British fishermen.
