Paris, 1920. French naval chart, 63 x 91.5 cms, black and white with beacons highlighted in yellow, insets of Port dAbri (the inner harbour at modern day Izmir) and two coastal profiles, slightly dusty lower margin, one or two closed marginal tears, blank verso. Engraved in 1866 after British charts by Copeland and Spratt, this example of the map was printed in September 1920 during the Greek occupation of the Zone of Smyrna, part of the territory awarded to Greece at the expense of the Ottoman Empire by the Allied powers after the Great War. Smyrna became an important base for Greek forces during the resulting Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922, and in the bloody aftermath of the Greek withdrawal half the city was razed in the Great Fire of Smyrna, also known as the Smyrna Catastrophe. Antwerp, Plantin-Moretus, 1595. Copper engraving, 32 x 49 cms, three maps on one sheet: Anatolia or modern Turkey, Egypt, Tunis and ancient Carthage; modern hand colour, conjugate wormhole at centrefold, Latin text on verso. An engraved historical note on the map of Carthage indicates that nearby Tunis, which is the focus of the map, was captured for Christendom by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V in 1535. A version of the truth perhaps, as Charles reinstated the deposed Hafsid Sultan but a Spanish governor resided at Goletta for a generation. The map was first published in 1570, just after the city had fallen into Ottoman hands, and although it was briefly recaptured Tunis had been Ottoman for 20 years by the time our example of the map was published. Descripción:
London: Charles Knight, c. 1840. Steel engraving, 33 x 38 cms, original hand colour, with black and white panoramic view of Parma at the foot, blank verso. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was founded in 1826 with the high-minded aim of making 'useful' information available to self-taught members of the working and lower middle classes. Some of the material was decidedly abstruse, subscribers fell away and the Society was wound up in 1848; however, the series of 209 maps published over a 14 year period from 1829 onwards were highly praised for their superior quality, accuracy and aesthetic appeal and remain an outstanding achievement. Basel: Officina Henricpetrina,, 1575. Woodcut, 20 x 37.7 cms, engraved by David Kandel, initialled lower right, modern hand colour, one or two marginal nicks and tears; birds eye view of Constantinople from the east, published in the second Italian text edition of Münster's Cosmographia. A compendium of topographical information, folklore and travels, the Cosmographia was first published with a modest 26 maps in 1544, mostly borrowed from his Ptolemy of 1540. A substantial enlargement took place in 1550, and after Münster's death in 1552 his step-son, Heinrich Petri (and his son, Sebastian), continued to revise and augment the work. A major revision took place in 1588, replacing some of the original maps with new examples following those in Ortelius' Theatrum; in the 1590s improved town plans were added, following the accurate examples in Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, so that by the last edition of 1628 the work had swollen to include over 260 maps…

Amsterdam, c. 1700. Copper engraving, 43.5 x 52 cms, original hand colour, trivial waterstaining to the outer margins, not approaching the printed area; blank verso. Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk often worked in partnership, towards the end of the Dutch Golden Age, when the United Provinces still led Europe in the field of map-making. Together they purchased the surviving copper printing plates of the famous Janssonius firm, among others, and reissued them under their own imprint. This map, covering the region of Syria in antiquity, was originally issued by Janssonius in the late 1650s. Map

Vienne, Gaspar Treschel, 1541. Woodcut, 30 x 46 cms, black and white, slight toning at centrefold, Latin text on verso; a Ptolemaic map of Asia Minor. Lorenz Fries' slightly reduced versions of Martin Waldseemüllers maps were engraved for a new edition of Ptolemys Geographia published by the Strasbourg printer Johann Grüninger in 1522 and 1525; after Grüningers death the blocks passed to the Treschel brothers, Melchior and Gaspar, who reprinted them in Lyons with a revised text in 1535. The revisions to Wilibald Pirkheimers translation were made by the polymath Spanish theologian, physician and humanist Michael Servetus, also known as Michel de Villeneuve, who was burned for heresy in Geneva in 1553. Our example is from the final edtion, published by Gaspar Treschel alone in Vienne, Isère, to be sold by Hugues de la Porte in Lyons. Map
