From a collection of prints of celebrities of Hertfordshire.

London: Craddock and Barnard, 1837.. Print: 11.2 x 13 cm. Plate: 16 x 16 cm. Spot in lower marign.Theatre ticket: a stage scene with seven performers, a dog and a cat, and in the background two tightrope walkers accompanied by an ape; within a frame, a satyr on either side; a forgery purporting to be an admission ticket for a performance of Fielding's Pasquin at the Haymarket Theatre in April 1736 The plates were bought by the publisher Baldwin, Cradock and Joy at the Boydell sale in 1818. The Works of William Hogarth as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates.

London: John Nichols and Son, circa 1826.. 2 separate prints on wove paper. 15 x 12 inches image size on 20.5 x 16.25 inches sheet size. Both prints with repaired margins and light foxing. Before (left) and After (right),; plates made in 1736. Etching and engravings, 2nd state (Paulson 141 and 142), with the the prices still slightly visible in the lower right margin.Hogarth painted two versions of these scenes, one depicting the lovers indoors and one outdoors. The first was commissioned by John Thomson, who fled to France before the paintings were finished, after being charged with fraud and theft in the 1731 Charitable Corporation scandal.The man in the scene has been identified as Sir John Willes, Walpole Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas and a notorious womanizer. Hogarth fills the prints with sexual innuendo, such as the framed cupid preparing to shoot his rocket before and smiling contentedly as the rocket returns to earth after.Although she hesitates, the woman is not…
