Commemorating the death of Dickens, these centenary essays are written by Walter Allen, Margaret Lane, Pamela Hansford Johnson, C.P. Snow, Barbara Hardy, Raymond Williams, John Holloway, and Angus Wilson. Divided into three parts: The Artist, The Critic of Society, and The Fellow-Man, the essays run the gamut from Dicken's social ideas to the sexual life depicted in his novels. The book is bound in a forest green cloth, with gilt spine lettering and a vignette drawing on the spine of Dickens in gilt and black. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1894. This Stated Second Edition of Benson's first novel from 1894 (the First Edition was in 1893) is in Good condition (click on photo). Any early printings from the original American publisher, Appleton, are rare. The book is bound in a light blue cloth with gilt lettering and design elements on the front panel and spine. The covers show some light soiling and several tiny stains, as well as fading of the author's name on the spine. There is also a one-inch tear on the spine cloth that does not affect the binding, which is tight and secure. There are no former signatures or inscriptions from former owners, and the cream-colored text pages are mainly clean and bright. Thomas Yoseloff, 1964. First published in 1960 and critically acclaimed, this stated Third Printing from 1964 is in Fine condition, with a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket. It's almost impossible to read about Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, or Max Beerbohm without learning about the flamboyant, self-promoting author and editor, Frank Harris, whose own biography was banned in most countries due to its blatant sexual content. The fascinating biography attempts to extract the real Frank Harris from the myths he weaved about himself. The book is bound in gray cloth with black spine titles. It is tightly bound, the pages clean and bright throughout. The dust jacket has light shelf wear and several tears. I've placed the dust jacket in an archival Brodart protective sleeve. Pleasantville, New York: The World's Best Reading/Reader's Digest, 1993. This handsome edition of Doyle's two most famous Sherlock Holmes novels in one volume, A Study in Scarlet and The Hound of the Baskervilles, are in As New, unread condition and includes the complete text of all eleven stories. In addition, the book includes new black-and-white illustrations by David Johnson and an Afterword by Philip A. Shreffler. The book's front and rear panels are bound in a deep brown marbleized leatherette, with a reddish brown leatherette spine. The front panel and spine include die-stamped gilt titles. Prior to the Jack Aubrey-Stephen Maturin series, this was Patrick O'Brian's first historical sea adventure featuring Commodore Anson's fateful circumnavigation of the globe in 1740 and Peter Palafox, son of a poor Irish parson who signs on as a midshipman. The book is in close to Fine condition, having only been read once and very gently. It is a First Printing Thus oversized paperback from Norton. Both front and rear exterior hinges and the rear interior hinge are split. The front panel is present but nearly unattached. The rear panel is attached but a bit warped. It's an oversized softcover in Fine, unread condition, with only minimal signs of shelf wear. The original wraps have flaps and the text is printed on quality paper. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1890. This complete, handsome two-volume set is in Very Good condition (click on photo). "Pendennis" is to Thackeray what "David Copperfield" is to Dickens. It is the closest Thackeray came to writing a satirical autobiography, but in fictional terms. The books are bound in a deep forest green, with gilt spine lettering and top-edge gilt. The books have light spine rubbing. The bindings are tight and secure, although the hinge paper is starting in Volume One. The books include 127 illustrations by Thackeray himself. It comes from a private college library and library markings are on the rear endpaper, with a tucked-in library card having only one date, January, 1935. The book is tightly bound in a library binding. The top spine cloth is rubbed, and the bottom spine cloth is missing about 3/4 of an inch. (Click on photo). This Ninth Edition was published in 1864. The book includes an Index of Authors and an Index according to subject matter. The rebinder has mixed up the order of some of the Index pages, six of which are edge-taped and one of which is missing a corner. Harlow, Essex, England: Longman Group Ltd, 1975. This First Edition from 1975 was published by Longman Group for the British Council as part of its series, "Writers & their Work." This stapled softcover, in its original wraps, was numbered 241 in the series. It is in Near-Fine condition but with the original owners name and address on the final blank page of the book. The booklet includes 61 pages, 48 of which is the extensive critique of Ausen by British scholar, Brian Southam. Also included is a Select Bibliography of Jane Austen.
