Wells, rare book dealer in New York from 1921 to 1938 on Madison Ave., discussing the authenticity of the Imperial Edition, and one from Philip Hofer [to Wells] on New York Public Library letterhead, verifying this copy as an Imperial Edition together with bibliographical details for the various editions of this work. All letters dated 1932. Hofer also invites Wells to tea, offering to show him copies of the three issue described in his letter. With a series of engravings drawn by John Thurston. First few leaves toned, mostly marginal; infrequent additional and minor text spotting. In the original parts. 17 x 11 cm., and 14 x 9 cm (1848-1849). 195 etched plates by Cruikshank, plus five fold-out plates, four in color. Thackeray contributed to the 1839-1840 issues. Contains practically all the first issue points noted by Cohn -- numbered pages of adverts at front and unnumbered at rear, all little slips as called for, Beaufoys toothache ads, proper paper color of wrappers (with scarce first issue green wrapper for 1848), with Bogue's Annual Catalogue for 1847, with "very scarce" 1845 issue containing the "Fine Art Distribution" woodcut on p.32. COHN 184. Marginal toning to some full page plates, light wear to bindings, neat repairs to several backstrips and wrappers. All color fold-out plates bright, crisp and clean.

The young Edwards made some drawings from the plates in the "Flora londinensis" which eventually caught the eye of Curtis who was sufficiently impressed with the work to arrange for Edwards to come to London for further training and instruction. Eventually he made many hundreds of drawings for "The Botanical Magazine," and severed his connection to Curtis only when he started his rival periodical in 1815 described here [see: HENREY, Vol. II, p.306].
