Signature of George R Cutter on title & endpaper, his pencil notes in text, & tow notes in his hand either laid or tipped in. Copy of George R. Cutter (1840-1891) who later authored an English/German medical dictionary, apparently the first such from an American. George Friedrich Louis Stromyer (1804-1876) was a pre-eminent German surgeon and was a pioneer in orthopedic surgery, best known for his advocacy of subcutaneous tenotomy (the use of operative methods to speed up the slower treatment of mechanical orthopedists for deformities). He was most famous for his successful surgery on William Little (1810-1894, the British orthopedic surgeon in famous his own right, who subsequently authored a book on clubfoot in 1839). Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie (1783-1862) was one of the best known British surgeons of his day, attending many prominent people including George IV. From an orthopaedic standpoint, he is best known for his description and treatment of bone abscess Brodies Abscess. The are worn, bookplate front pastedown, name title page. Very good minus. Thorndike (1863-1940 ) was a Harvard Medical School surgeon, and is known for co-founding (with Bradford) the Industrial School for Crippled and Deformed Children in Boston in 1884, said to be the first school in the country for children with disabilities. Later re-named Cotting School. The leather is significantly chipped from the cardboard underlayment on the covers and somewhat on the spine. Name second front endpaper. Page 127/28 has a small chip and a fold tear on the fore edge else the contents are bright, very good. Overall a fair to good copy of an uncommon title.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair.

The illustrations include drawings of Percy s wheeled ambulance and camel ambulance with special saddles to carry wounded. Larrey (1768-1842) studied under Desault at L Hotel Dieu. He became the greatest military surgeon in history. He was present at all of Napoleon s great battles and was one of the few who stood by him on his abdication and waited for him to return in 1815. Napoleon said he was the most virtuous man he knew. He was one of the first to amputate at the hip joint, the first to describe the therapeutic effect of maggots on wounds, gave the first description of trench foot, invented the flying ambulance , used advanced first-aid posts on the battlefield, and devised several new operations.
