A history of missions undertaken by the Methodists around the world, including missions to China, Brazil, Ceylon, various locations in Africa, Mexico, and the American Southwest, including California and among the Native Americans. Includes detailed accounts of these and other missions, perhaps intended to serve as an example for other aspirant missionaries. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven fading to the covers, especially along the extremities. Spine rather faded. Minor soiling. A few small stains to the rear cover. Some scuffing. Extremities bumped and scuffed. Lower front interior hinge cracked and starting to separate. Text block solid with scattered minor foxing. Foxing to the page edges.

Single issue of this magazine, featuring: the first part of a novel by Mark Twain, written under the pseudonym Louis de Conte, "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc;" part five of "Hearts Insurgent," by Thomas Hardy; an illustrated piece by Charles Dana Gibson "Paris in Mourning;" "Autumn in Japan," written and illustrated by Alfred Parsons, etc. GOOD condition. Wrappers soiled, spotted and stained, with general toning. Dampstain along the bottom edge. Chipping, tearing and loss at the head and tail of the spine, with a small area of nibbling near the top corner. Large tear along the rear wrapper hinge. Minor soiling and foxing in the interior.

Cambridge: Crimson Printing Company, 1958. Wraps. Very Good. One of three hundred copies printed. Blue printed wraps. 12 pp. A musing on the landscape of the Himalayan Mountains, as experienced by the author's air travel into the region. Hofer was an art historian and book collector at Harvard University. VERY GOOD condition. Minor toning. Some wrinkling along the extremities.

Marbled boards. 207 pp. Black and white illustrations throughout. Map MISSING from the rear inside cover. A guide for traveling and touring Paris, France, discussing churches, the catacombs, the police, galleries, hotels, etc. OCLC records attribute the work to T.M. Hughes. FAIR condition, LACKING the leather backstrip and map in the rear. Covers somewhat tenuously attached to the text block. Moderate fading, scuffing and minor soiling to the covers. Heavy scuffing along the extremities, especially to the corners. Minor scattered foxing and soiling in the interior.

All page edges gilt. 299 pp plus 8 pages of ads. With several black and white illustrated plates. A description of then modern Italy interspersed with anecdotes on the lives of famous Italians, including Dante, Savonarola and others. Ritchie also describes locations such as Galileo's villa, the bridges of Florence, the Protestant cemetery in Florence, etc. Mowatt Ritchie was a noted 19th century author and actress, writing several plays and novels to some acclaim. In GOOD condition with moderate scuffing and fading to the cloth. Mostly minor soiling with a few small ink spots to the rear cover. Heavy scuffing to the cloth along the extremities, being frayed and worn through at the corners and head and tail of the spine. Cloth splitting along the upper front hinge. No jacket. 125 pp. With a few photo plates throughout. All present as called for. A recounting of the author's travels to various missions and missionaries in Japan, China, India and Burma, detailing the lives, customs and culture of the people of those countries. Written from the perspective of a missionary and influenced by Biblical teachings. Of note is a lengthy inscription on the front free endpaper by the author's son, apparently written on her passing, in which he states how lucky he is and quotes a note written by Helen Keller to him, in which she says, "She is not dead, she is just away." The son of Bainbridge asserts in his inscription that Helen Keller and Lucy Bainbridge were friends. (An online copy of a 1933 newspaper article also mentions this.) In VERY GOOD condition. Stated first American edition. x, 284, iv pp. Full leather with minor gilt decorative ruling to the covers, and gilt banding to the spine. Johnson's reflections on the natural and cultural history of Western Scotland, recounting his journeys among the lakes and terrain of various islands, and into various villages. In GOOD condition. Moderate scuffing to the leather, with rather heavy scuffing along the extremities and hinges. Corners bumped and slightly bent over. Very minor surface cracking to the leather spine. Missing a ½ inch triangular piece at the foot of the spine. A few minor ink smudges to the rear cover, with a faint dampstain at the upper right corner. First two front endpapers beginning to detach along the lower gutter. A guide for the years 1914 and 1915 for automobiling and touring in Switzerland and the Savoy region of Europe. With many in text small and large road maps, in color. Advertisements appear throughout for various car parts and autos, etc. In VERY GOOD condition. General fading to the covers, mostly the front cover and the spine. Minor soiling and scuffing. Minor to moderate bumping and scuffing to the extremities with a bit of fraying to the head of the spine. Interior clean and solid with general but mostly minor darkening to the pages.

A photo essay on the Near East, focusing on lands related to Jesus Christ, including ancient ruins as well as documenting the then modern life and culture in the region. Includes photos of cities, the Jordan River, etc. GOOD condition. Uneven heavy toning to the covers. Some soiling, spotting, foxing and staining to the covers. Cloth frayed and worn along the extremities. Text block toned. Minor chipping to the endpapers.

Lausanne: Librairie Payot et Cie, 1932. Quarter Leather. Good/No Jacket. #9 of 35 copies SIGNED by the author. Blue marbled paper covered boards with a blue leather spine (not as issued). Original wraps bound in. 201 pp. All text in French. A few black and white photo plates and illustrated plates throughout. A travelogue of the author's trip through central Europe in the late 1920s, in an effort to recapture the romantic notion of Europe. Denis de Rougemont was a Swiss author and cultural theorist. GOOD+ condition. Heavy scuffing/fading to the leather along the spine. Minor fading and edgewear to the book. Some browning to the paper.

Rear cover a full page color illustration for the 1936 Olympics to be held in Berlin. 27 pp. Black and white illustrations and photos throughout. Text in German and English. Rear cover a color printing of the Franz Wurbel poster designed for the Berlin Olympics, alluding to white supremacy that the Nazi regime hoped to convey. Single issue of this somewhat promotional magazine issued by Norddeutscher Lloyd for its passenger ships. With articles and fiction throughout. Includes a German language account of Marrakesh, several short pieces in English on the 1936 Olympic Games, a short story in English by A.E. Ashford, etc. GOOD condition. Faint foxing and spotting to the covers. Rear cover a bit toned, with some soiling. Creasing and scuffing along the extremities. Scattered foxing in the interior.

Geneva: Ed. Labarthe and Co, 1866. Original Wraps. Very Good. No date but believed 1866 (OCLC record). Original wraps. 32 pp. 3 ½ by 4 ¾ tall. With a map and an illustration on the rear cover, depicting the hotels Schweizerhof and Luzernerhof, with the lake in the foreground and several boats upon it. A small booklet providing travel information on Lucerne and the surrounding area, giving brief histories of various architectural landmarks, as well as historical detail on the land itself. About VERY GOOD with some creasing to the lower front corner and along the cover fore edge. Minor soiling and general fading. Interior clean and solid with general darkening to the pages.

Third issue of this zine by zinester Tara Sin (also the mastermind behind We Like Poo). This issue documents a trip to Hong Kong through a collage of photos, maps, and text. GOOD+ condition. Minor wrinkling, toning and curling to the covers.

A guide to the government, geography, political and social aspects of Macao. This includes a history, as well as a look at its commerce and industry, mostly written to promote tourism. FAIR condition. Ex-library with a stamp to the front and rear cover. Covers toned, with some foxing and spotting. Minor soiling. Extremities scuffed. Very light scattered foxing in the interior. Text block cracked at the interior front hinge, with the first few leaves DETACHED and laid in.

MISSING the map on the inside rear cover. A travel guide for Maine, describing cities and towns, scenic and historic places, fishing and hunting information, and information for tourists. GOOD condition. Covers soiled and stained, with creasing wrinkling and scuffing. Owner's name in ink across top of front cover. Some wrinkling and scattered soiling in the interior, with minor staining in the gutter of several pages from the metal comb binding. Last two leaves with a piece torn from their upper margins.

A guide, similar to the popular Baedeker guides, for traveling in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. This includes New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Labrador and Quebec. With discussion of the old Acadian lands, as well as other historical topics. GOOD condition. Cloth rather mottled, with uneven moderate fading and darkening. Minor soiling. Cloth frayed and worn along the extremities, with minor loss at the tail of the spine. Some foxing to the pages facing the fold out maps. Minor foxing and soiling throughout.

New York: Published for the author at the Methodist Book Concern, 1845. First Edition. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. Finely ribbed dark brown cloth with gilt titling and minor ruling and decoration in blind. 138 pages. With a frontis portrait. Drawn mostly from journal entries and letters, this work reflects primarily the spiritual life of Susan Howard, with the last 50 plus pages chronicling her trip from New York to Buenos Aires, by way of Monte Video. Howard recounts life aboard the ship and in South America, as well as her time in Buenos Aires, where her efforts would be spent engaging in a missionary school. In GOOD condition. Slightly EX-LIBRARY with a few faint library stamps on the inside front cover and title page. Call numbers on the title page. No markings on the exterior. Xxix, 376; viii, 414 pp. Title page calls for charts, but NO charts are bound in, nor can any page numbers for charts be found in the contents of each volume. A history of various countries, kingdoms and empires to border the Black Sea, and the maritime trade between them, as well as other historical events. With a focus on Turkey and Egypt, both historical and contemporary to 1819, recalling items of trade, cultural aspects and other information related to maritime trade. By Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn, an American politician and author. Dearborn, according to the preface wrote this anticipating the importance of sea trade for the United States in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea area. GOOD condition. Boston: American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, 1875. Wraps. Good. Printed wraps. A monthly issued piece providing reports from missionaries worldwide, with this issue containing a report on Peking (Beijing) by A.O. Treat, accompanied by an illustration and describing the city and people, as well missionary related items. Also present are letters/reports from missions in various parts of Japan; a North China mission; a mission in Madura, India; central and western Turkey missions, etc.. Most reports contain accounting of the trials and tribulations of the missionaries themselves, with tiny bits of news or information about the lands in which they reside. GOOD condition. Pencil notation on the front cover. Minor foxing and soiling. Faint vertical fold crease present, with other minor creases, a bit heavier to the rear cover. Some splitting along the spine.

London: James Duncan, 1829. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Believed first editions. Mixed set with darker brown leather on volume one and a more reddish leather on volume 2. Each described here separately. With a fold out map of Africa at the frontis (engraved by Stanley Hall) of volume 1 and three illustrations (black and white) as called for. 374 numbered pages, 2 blank front and rear endpapers, title page, table contents, and a page of a list of authorities (a sort of bibliography). Half leather with marbled boards, four raised bands on the spine as well as gilt titling, ruling and minor ornamentation. Written as an historical travelogue, this volume offers a rather Eurocentric view of Africa ranging from ancient discoveries, to discussions of life in Tripoli, Cyrene, Tunis, Bizerta, Tabarca, Algiers, Morocco, the bombardment pf Algiers by the British fleet, treatment of Christian slaves, etc. In VERY GOOD condition.
