1887. 1/4 leather. Very Good +. A meticulously-crafted album of 29 original, mounted photographs of Yellowstone, all or most of them likely taken in 1887 and purchased directly from the 14-year old National Park. Though the photos are uncredited, we can surmise that photographers such as Thomas Hine, Charles D. Loughrey, Frank Jay Haynes (the official photographer of Yellowstone National Park) or even the renowned William Henry Jackson may have been responsible for some of these photos. All but one of the photos is nicely hand-captioned by a former owner (possibly Joseph D. Potts, whose name adorns the first blank endpaper), the captions serving as crucial identifiers to specific geysers, craters, falls, buildings, etc. The photographs, while all varying slightly in size, are each roughly 8 1/2" wide x 6 1/2" tall. New York: PIX Incorporated, 1947. Photograph. Near Fine. A crisp, very sharp example of this press photograph of M. Tanguy-Frigent. According to the description on the back of the photograph, he was the post-War "French minister of agriculture and the most hated man in France, (here) making a statement about the grain policy of the government, to-day". Clean and Near Fine, measuring 9 1/2" wide x 7" tall.

Decorative Cloth. Very Good. Interesting album (7" wide x 5" tall) of 24 hand-colored mounted photographs. Set in late 19th century Japan, bound in decorative brown cloth in a concertina/accordion style. Sepia-toned portraits, enlivened by splashes of red, green and purple. On the front pastedown printed date and name: "April 11, 1887 - With sincere congratulations of Chas. T. Bischof."

1972. Near Fine. A warm, gracious 2 pg. ALS from the photographer Paul Strand, referencing --among other things-- an evening with Hart Crane. Strand is patiently responding (from France) to a Vietnam vet (whose 2 letters are here included) who asks if he and his wife might work for an aging Strand in any capacity. Strand's August 1972 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" letter in response is bright and clean and has held up nicely. His hand is strong and the ball-point ink completely legible. Also includes the original enevelope (addressed in Strand's hand and postmarked "Yvesines", France).

1973. Photograph. Near Fine. 3 rare photos of the great Duane Jones (1937-1988), the lead actor in 1968's beyond-seminal "Night of the Living Dead". The 3 photos are from Jones's next --and only other-- starring film role, the 1973 American black horror film "Ganja & Hess". The photos were taken by renowned jazz photographer Charles Stewart (1927-2017) and each boasts Stewart's professional stamp at the rear. 1 of the 3 photos features Jones with his co-star, the actress Marlene Clark, and the other 2 show Jones either in a scene from the film or in preparation for a scene. The oversized black-and-white photos each measure 11" wide x 14" tall and have held up very nicely. Each is clean, bright and very sharp. Only the portrait of Jones with the dark backdrop shows a bit of creasing and one small closed tear along the lower-edges. Wonderful handmade photo album, consisting of 144 pages of evocative portraits and autographs gathered between May 1919 and August 1920 by professional German dancers Edith & Gaillard. The album profiles colleagues and friends, creative performers of all kinds, including cabaret artists, opera singers, actors, comedians and dancers. Silver gelatin photographs and postcards, all accompanied by warm inscriptions from the subjects. Antwerp, Belgium: Gallery Ronny Van de Velde, 1989. Near Fine. A magnificent --and very uncommon-- portfolio of original photographic prints by Nat Finkelstein (1933-2009), one of the great chroniclers of Andy Warhol, specifically his mid to late 60s period at The Factory. Gallery Ronny Van de Velde of Antwerp produced and published this lavish tribute to Warhol in 1989 in a tiny edition of 50 copies (this being #31). Included in the complete portfolio are: "nine black/white photographs (30 cm x 40 cm)"; "one black/white photograph (15 cm x 22 cm)"; "one repetition of ten photographs on linen (80 cm x 160 cm)"; "one photo screened canvas (27 cm x 27 cm)"; and "one eight minute video cassette". "Each image is signed, stamped, and numbered (31/50) by the artist" and each is mounted to a light-gray cardboard backing, with dark, thin-cardboard guards (which have done their job well and kept each of the prints in pristine condition).
