Descripción:
BRITAIN. Good. 1914. On offer is a simply outstanding first hand record of life on the front lines of WWI. All units in the British Army were required after 1907 to keep a Unit war diary. This is not a personal record but rather a unit record of information such as orders, movements, location, activities, casualties, etc which can be used later for training purposes and as a starting point for a review of tactics - successful and otherwise. It also serves to to create a detailed historical record of each Unit for archival purposes. British Army Units have kept these from 1907 right up to the present day. The physical format is standardized. Inside a heavy card stock cover, the loose leaf pages are secured with a metal clip. The faded letters of his name, Unit (RAMC) and 6 Div can be read. Each page has a duplicate page that records a carbon copy. When turned in, the original 'top' page of each page goes, in the case of the British Army, to the National Archives. The carbon copy… Leer más

Descripción:
Offering a 1914 handwritten personal diary by Earle Sumner Draper, who would go on to have a major impact on urban planning in the United States. At the time of writing, Draper was a 21-year-old Massachusetts Agricultural College (later called UMass Amherst) student. The book offers an excellent glimpse of what life as a landscape architecture student in the 1940s looked like. Draper's days are filled with studying, socializing, and extracurriculars. "Up at 8: 30 went into Boston -- around looking for a summer job in [...] offices. Fair luck. Dinner at N. S. Hotel. Took Susie out to the Harvard game. An awful game -- we lost 18-3. Took the 6:10 out to Harry's and studied in evening. Bed at 10:30 PM" (February 11). "Up at 5: 45 and studied Hort. Waited. Worked all morning with Harrison on topo work. Cut Math. Learned more about topo than I ever knew before. Cut drill (was excused). Tennis practice in doubles. Supper. Worked on Frat ball game. Studied L [...] 10 all evening" (May 20).… Leer más

Massachusetts. Good with no dust jacket. 1916. Hardcover. On offer are the detailed notes of a Massachusetts lawyer in the early 20th century. The notebook belonged to J. L Bigelow. Context clues indicate he was a law student at Harvard, possibly during the early days of his note-taking in this book. He appears in a list of Harvard alumni with the letters A. A. F. S following his name. He also appears in a news article written September 25, 1914 in the Harvard Crimson, which lists J. L. Bigelow as a member of the Harvard Varsity football team and identifies him as part of Harvard’s class of 1916. Our informal research has not turned up any additional biographical information about him. Bigelow’s notebook entries are a series of notes about a variety of cases as well as references to various legal precedents. An excerpt from his notebook follows: “Chicago & Great Eastern R Co, vs Dane 1. Def (defendant) wrote “we hereby agree (meaning offer) to receive in this port… Leer más

Very Good. 1917. On offer is a small, fascinating archive of eight [8] original manuscript letters handwritten by Zella Gertrude Baynham (later Martin) while "on duty" at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia from 1917-1919 to Agnes Maust in Berwick, Pennsylvania. Friends Hospital is recognized as one of the premier mental hospitals in the United States. It was founded by Quakers in 1813. Baynham commenced nursing at Friends Hospital in 1916. The letters are diary like as Zella tells a close friend many important details of her life as a nurse; about her training at Bellevue Hospital in New York City; how she has been "charge nurse of the convalescent ward for 5 weeks; about her courses of study and examinations; much more about her patients and their care; how at one point she had "a private practice"; later describes having an infected finger that "has been cut 5 times in 3 to 4 places...A rose thorn was the cause of it"; also about brief training at Harlem… Leer más

GUANTANAMO, CUBA. Good+. 1917. On offer is a super, original scrapbook and manuscript relic of World War I era service at Guantanamo Bay created, compiled and annotated by 24 year old US Marine Private Foreman Leroy (Roy) Alpaugh [1893 - 1967]. He was a member of the 7th Regiment, 59th Company from New York City. In many ways a diary of his life in the service the scrapbook, with many pieces of ephemera; photos, postcards, notes, clippings etc., begins with his enlistment April 26, 1917 at a recruiting station in Newark, New Jersey to his deployment in Cuba and time spent there. He talks of initially guarding the pier at East 24th Street, New York City and "we had it quite nice on the pier for a month or so until August 24th. Then I found much to my disgust that the 59th Co. of which I was a part was ordered to Philadelphia for transport to the tropics. We pulled out on board the Prairie at midnight Aug 20th and on the 27th came into the bay of Guantanamo, disembarking on the 28th,… Leer más

Descripción:
On offer is a fine description of life in rural Maine at the end of World War I. The author of this 1918 diary is 65-year-old Charles Green of Skowhegan, Maine. Green was born in 1853 and spent his entire life in and around the village where he lived with his wife and three sons. He passed away in 1935 at the age of 82. When Green recorded the events of this diary he was a widower--his wife, Emma, having died a year earlier. He spends his days doing a variety of small tasks, and enjoys meeting friends to socialize and play cards at a local hotel: "A.M. About home. P.M. Went to see income tax man and bank and then went to Butler's office and had papers made out. Evening at hotel a while and come home 8:30. Fine day" (January 29). "A.M. Split wood. Changed clothes and went to town and played 63 at hotel and went over to garage. Evening played 63 a while and come and wrote letters. Mild and rained some" (February 12). "Got up and come home and read till 4:50 P. M. Then went to town at 5… Leer más

France, United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1919. Manuscript. On offer is a fascinating record of an American army officer in France immediately following the end of World War One. The author of this notebook is uncertain. Context does suggest that he is American, as his travels eventually take him to Pontanezen Camp--a huge American base in northwestern France from where American troops were repatriated to the United States. The journal begins with a reference to the nascent League of Nations on page 2: "Great General Council and minor councils, decrees of former, binding and enforced by armies of combined states (only 15 powers) ." The next page bears the first date: February 9, 1919. In this entry, the author details a train trip from Rouen across northern Europe to Vimy Ridge, where he visited military graveyards. He specifically references the 5th, 7th, 14th, 15th, and 16th Canadian Battalions. Vimy Ridge is Canadas most celebrated military victory in WWI. As the author of this… Leer más

Atlanta Georgia. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1922. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting scholarly catalog of birds of North America dating from the early days of the 20th century. On the front flyleaf, there is the handwritten title A Catalog of the Birds of North America in the Collection of Emory University . It was compiled no earlier than 1922 as the latest entry is date December 28th, 1921. The handwritten listings are indexed according to the alphabetic codes which are abbreviations of English or scientific bird names that are employed by ornithologists as shorthand. This code, known as AOU was developed by the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU; now American Ornithological Society, AOS). It was designed to allow quicker data entry than filling out the full English or scientific name of a species and they can also serve to cross-check other recorded names or numeric data. The author of this catalogue is unknown. Entries take the following form: “AOU 511 Quiscalus… Leer más

Most of the photographs are either 2 inches by 2.75 inches or 5 inches by 3 inches. There are 36 photographs of automobiles decorated as floats for a parade. The pictures offer a fair amount of detail. There is an American Legion float, as well as a Knights of Columbus float in the parade. There are cars decorated with an acronym BPOE (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks). U.S. Navy. Good. 1920. On offer is an excellent small songbook kept by an American sailor. This notebook measures 6 inches by 3 3/4 inches and contains 140 pages. It is 60% complete. The cover and pages are in good condition and the handwriting is very legible. For centuries, sailors have used songs to help with their heavy work, to entertain themselves and to build the sense of crew spirit so needed to man ships for long periods of time in all kinds of weather. Lewis Szarek was no different. A Machinists Mate in the United States Navy, he apparently served from the late 1920's into WWII. He has written his name and service (US Navy) on the inside cover. Casual research suggests that he comes from Providence, RI. However, no other biographical data was found. The notebooks contain the lyrics to 39 songs. One song, Coghlan's Black Gang Crew, possibly points to the ship he served on in WWII - the destroyer USS Coughlan (DD 606). The term 'black gang' is a naval term with its… Leer más

On offer are two wonderful travel journals written by H. W. Ellis of Watertown, New York. They detail two ocean trips taken immediately following World War I, in 1922 and 1924, and also reference an American businessman who laid the foundation for Newell Brands, a multi-billion-dollar US corporation. Ellis's journals are very well written and provide a wealth of small details about his experiences as he travels by ship, first, in 1922, across the Atlantic to England and France, and then, in 1924, south to Panama. On July 21, Ellis left his home in Watertown for a trip to England, where he would be visiting friends, and then on to France. He journeyed down the Saint Lawrence River to Montreal, where he boarded the SS Minnedosa. Minnedosa was a 15,000 ton steam ocean liner, the hull of which was built in Glasgow for the Canadian Pacific Shipping Line. She carried numerous immigrants to Canada and the United States and for a period in the late 1920s was commanded by Captain Ronald Niel… Leer más

On offer is a fascinating, firsthand account of a young woman's social life in the heady days of 1920s New York City. An inscription suggests that the author of this journal is "Miss J Smith" of Hewlett, Long Island. The vibrant social life described in Smith's diary exemplifies the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. In entries that date from January 1924 to July 1925, Smith describes spending evenings dining at restaurants, seeing plays and movies, dancing and going for drives, and staying out with her friends until well into the morning hours. "Bill came up Mae, B and I went to the Eureka. Saw 'Eternal City.' Saw Marguerite McClane at the Eureka -- with tall blond fellow. She has to (be) one of the girls club dancers. Spoke a few words to her" (January 20, 1924). "Bill came about 7: 00. Joe was outside in the car. Went to Maywood for Amelia Schmidt got in show --'Poppy' a little late. Very good. Sat in 3rd row orchestra. Went to Old Heideburg in Union Hills for eats. Had nice time. Got home… Leer más

Descripción:
On offer is a fine diary of successful farmer Charles L. Merrick of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, in the early years of the twentieth century. Merrick was born in 1902 and lived his life in Massachusetts. He passed away in 1995 at the age of 93. Merrick is part of a multi-generational family that has owned Merrick Farm in Wilbraham since the original land grant in 1714. The farm business continues to this day in the hands of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. At the time the diary was written, Merrick was 23 years of age. The diary tells us he had graduated from college and was a member of a fraternity, most likely Theta Delta Chi. At the time of writing, he was working for a company (possibly family-owned) that produced, among other products, sashes. This diary gives an excellent look at the life of a young man just beginning his career. "Very hot. Pa, Dick & I went to Amherst after some business in Amherst. Saw Whitcomb, Daly & Olds about the young books. Got some stuff at the… Leer más
