TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA. Good. 1906. Hardcover. On offer is a small archive of two [2] notebooks, the earliest dated 1906 through 1914 and then a later sketchbook and catchall for drawings and notes on art and architecture dated in the 1940s. Both books were handwritten and hand-drawn by O. Harold McAvoy [1891 - 1977], a noted Toronto architect and artist. A very unique grouping seeing the artist as a boy and then the middle aged man. In the early book, a flip book style notepad, 50+ pp, the young Harold drew, made notes, kept scores and a myriad of other things a youngster of the time might note: Harold transcribes a number of movies and books; 'The Talisman', 'Runaway June'; Sudoku game boards and instructions; a caricature of Ti-Cob [assuredly in baseball uniform the famed Ty Cobb]; a synopsis of Silas Marner and later notes on chemistry, architecture and then a piece of blueprint relevant to his studies. Later, the 30 year older Harold was deeply ensconced studying… Leer más

BELGIAN CONGO ALBERTVILLE, 1906. On offer is an original letter, written in English, dated Haut (Upper) Congo, Nov 14th 1906, by an unknown female writer who appears to be the wife of a missionary who was being prosecuted by the Congo Police, (casual research suggest this is possibly the British Reverend Edgar Stannard). The letter specifically refers to implication in the "Commandant Hagström affair..." The tremendous political controversy surrounded a charge of libelling Congo police officer Hagström, made by the Governor General of the Congo Free State and King Leopold, against the Reverend who accused Hagström of practicing brutality and cannibalism. Arthur Conan Doyle also described exploitation and atrocities in his book "The Crime of the Congo." . Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Manuscript.

There he built the Cascades Golf Course at his home called "Homestead." During WW II the Japanese diplomats were lodged in The Homestead, where their activities were monitored by the state department and FBI. After the war their hotel prospered. Newark, New Jersey. Fair with no dust jacket. 1907. Manuscript. On offer is a newsy letter written by a New York University law student, Fred G. Stickel Jr. (1888-1969). Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Stickel graduated from NYU in 1909. He moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he went on to become a prominent lawyer who was appointed judge in 1919, served until 1924, and then opened his own law firm. His legal career focused heavily on juvenile offenders. In this 1907 letter, Stickel is a very busy student who has recently taken on a job at a Newark law firm run by partners Cortlandt Parker and Richard Wayne Parker. He types a return letter to his friend, Donald, who is attending a different university. Stickel laments how poorly his schools baseball team is performing, discusses a trip to Mardi Gras with his girlfriend, Esther (who is not the girl he will one day marry) , comments humorously on mutual contacts from Scranton. HAVRE DE GRACE, MARYLAND, SOUTH RIVER NEW JERSEY. Good+. 1908. On offer is a remarkable, eye opening archive of manuscript love letters for the most part written to two sisters; Geraldine [b.1900] and Dorothy [b. 1894] Moore of Havre de Grace Maryland. Their father was Lester and their mother Isabelle. At one point the family lived in New Jersey but after their father died (circa 1905), mom and the two girls moved to Havre de Grace Maryland to the Burns Apartments. Sometime in the 1930s some of the letters were addressed to South River New Jersey. Given that the letters were for the most part written by adoring suitors, interestingly, both women remained single as per 1940 census records. Of the 100 pieces in the group 60 or so are letters the earliest is from 1908 and the last letter is dated 1937 with the majority from the 1920s. The balance is related ephemera. The letters prove to be an education in early 20th Century romancing. For example one suitor, Douglas Hobart Cushman, who… Leer más

NEW JERSEY TO SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES, USA. Very Good. 1908. On offer are a fascinating pair [2] of handwritten letters surrounding a cross-country trip taken in the first decade of the 20th century. The two letters, totalling 22 pages, are a fascinating look at early 20th Century America, and most interestingly, a chilling account of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake that killed about 3,000 people died and destroyed over 80% of the city, that occurred two years before the author arrived in the city. The letters were written by Will H. Payne who was writing to his wife back in England. The letters begin with Will already in San Francisco. This first one dates February 24th, 1908. In it, Will tells his wife about the trip from Washington D.C. to California. His descriptions of the towns along the way across America is wonderful, especially his words on the wild city of New Orleans. From New Jersey, Will goes onto Philadelphia, Washington D.C., North and South Carolina, Georgia,… Leer más

CULLMAN CEDAR BLUFF ALABAMA. Fair. 1909. On offer is a fascinating, naïve group of eight [8] original ledgers once owned and handwritten by we believe a doctor named J.P. Wilson of Cedar Bluff Alabama as per an inscription in the 1909 book. [That said we cannot be certain as to ownership as there are two possible ownership inscriptions the other in the 1916 book of J. D. King of Cullman County Alabama. Local researchers should undoubtedly be able to confirm the author.] Through the years 1909, 1910, 1912, 1916, 1918, 1920, 1924 to 1927 readers will find a trove of date regarding this doctor's practice in Northern Alabama. The information includes a daily tally of patients seen, prognosis, medicines given and amount, what he charged for his services, how much the patient paid, and the balance owed to him. These also show some of the trades he made for his services. Many of the births and deaths are recorded. All told the books make for what would through forensic analysis of the… Leer más

CONGO AFRICA [?], 1910. On offer is an interesting c.1910 manuscript précis handwritten by an unknown missionary titled "Trying Features of Work in Africa". The author begins: "The great difficulty which confronts the missionary in going to the Congo is the climate". The author elaborates and discusses paganism and degradation, pneumonia among the natives, the importance of the pith helmet as sun guard ("a few moments bareheaded would surely be followed by sunstroke. Missionaries who are extremely careful in this regard have been known to have been taken down with fever, and have died in a few days from the thoughtless exposure of the bare head to the sun"), malaria and "the sleeping sickness." [We date the manuscript by the author writing: "scientific investigations have proved beyond a doubt that malaria is caused by mosquitoes or by a certain species of mosquito." Philadelphia, PA Pennsylvania. Good. 1911. On offer is an exceptional archive of manuscript diaries handwritten by a young woman named Viola Brodbeck [b. July 23rd, 1888]. The archive includes five [5] diaries dating 1911[age 22], 1912, 1914, 1916 and 1917 plus six [6] printed music books which bear her holograph notes peppering the texts from her time at college. This is a unique look at the process a young woman aspiring to be a professional singer goes through. Viola draws a picture of a young woman of some privilege [they have good seats for Woodrow Wilson's Inaugural address in 1917]and means taking lessons, immersing herself in the arts and of course practice, practice, practice to succeed in her drive to perform and Viola does in fact become a soprano for the Philadelphia Orchestra.
