New York: The MacMillan Company, 1940. First Printing . Sand Colored Linen. Very Good/Good. 8 5/8" Tall. While it is a matter of regret that certain important groups of letters are still unshared by their recipients or present owners, it may be that such sections of his correspondence could, after all, add no more poignant emphasis to the gropings of his adolescence, the ardors of his maturity. Nor could any letters throw into sharper relief the fact that, youth once passed, the many and prolonged difficulties that beset him were of his exterior life only." [Introduction] 191 pages, with Notes; plus xi pages, prefatory matter, including Biographical Note. DJ has mended chips, but is brittle and shows losses; 1 3/8" circular stain (olive oil?) on DJ; boards are clean and sound; bookplate on front paste-down; inked gift dedication on front endpaper; text is clean and strong, but coloring at edges.

Soft cover/NF w/faint creasing to upper front corner. Pen mark to front cover verso & phone number to rear endpaper. Diary. Day-to-day account of running a South Dakota cattle ranch by rancher, poet, feminist and environmentalist Linda Hasselstrom. Given winters of below -56 degree when winds hold at 25 miles an hour; springs needing to check on pregnant cows at 10 PM, midnight, & 2 AM, plus April snow storms that can do-in the vegetable gardenb. Spring means getting up at ten p.m., midnight, and two a.m. to check on pregnant cows. Snow storms at the end of April can decimate a vegetable garden; and summers tossing hay ending in freezing, drying and canning while contantly on the look-out for prairie fires ...yet something makes for ranching in South Dakota. Perhaps a break in the wind? Hope in spring? Lovliness in summer?…
