[ff. 8]. 10 engraved plates, 8 by Jacob.Merz, 2 by Richter after Fischer. 19th century half calf (quite rubbed, some foxing & light marginal soiling, short tears in title & margins of a few plates with no loss). Fischer, a sculptor, was professor of anatomy at the Academy of Graphic and Plastic Arts of Vienna. In the 1780's he undertook to construct an anatomic-myologic statue for the use of graphic and plastic artists and also completed a reduced-scale reproduction of the skeleton which had been used in making the statue. Later he completed a life-size myologic statue which was placed in the Academy of Graphic and Plastic Arts of Vienna, and a smaller soft-metal statuette. Several unauthorized editions appeared before Fischer published his own revised version in 1790. Included is a satirical epistle written by Christoph August Heumann [1681-1763] under the pseudonym of Sebastian Stadel. The frontispiece depicting a medicine show has the semi-literate caption ‘Muntus fuld tezibi’ (Mundus vult decepi). Broussais was a pupil of Bichart, surgeon of the armies of France, physician-in-chief at Val-de-Grâce, and from 1831, Professor General Pathology at Paris. “Broussais believed that the basis of all pathology was gastroenteritis and that debilitating treatment was called for in nearly every disease. His most common remedy was the application of leeches to the stomach or the head. The popularity of his methods is evidenced by the fact that during one year, over 35,000,000 leeches were imported into France.” (Heirs of Hippocrates) Following the discreditation of his theories he turned his attention to the field of mental illness. Modena: Bartolomeo Soliani, 1722. Second Soliani Edition of this treatise on the plague, its legal, medical, political and religious aspects, and the best practices for avoiding it. The second part, pp. [365]-401, based on an account written by François Chicoyneau, J.Verny, and J.Soulier, concerns the outbreak of the plague in Marseilles in 1720-21. Muratori, an Italian priest and noted scholar, historian and antiquarian, was employed as archivist and librarian to Duke Rinaldo I in Modena from 1700 until his death. Muratori is also distinguished for his discovery of the ‘Muratorian fragment’, the earliest known list of New Testament books. First published in 1586, Porta’s famous treatise was one of the earliest major texts specifically devoted to physiognomy, the art of determining character or personal characteristics from the form or features of the body. The numerous woodcut text illustrations draw comparisons between the physical features of men and animals in an attempt to relate their nature. These comparisons still persist in our vocabulary in adjectives such as bovine, ovine, lupine, aquiline, assinine, porcine, &c. This second French edition, prepared by Anne Charles Lorry, is considerably enlarged. Barker practised medicine in Salisbury and London, where he became physician to the Westminster Hospital.
