Sherlock wrote strongly against popery throughout the reign of James, despite upholding the doctrine of passive obedience. During the Revolution he went first with the non-jurors, but a year later took the oath. In the preface to the present work Sherlock's gives his own account of his reasons for taking the oath, "that his eyes were opened by the doctrine laid down in canon xxviii. of 'Bishop Overall's Convocation Book', published by Sancroft in the nonjuring interest in January 1690.His point was that this canon showed that the Anglican church recognised a government de facto." London: 1700-1727. Thomas Bray [1656-1730]. The English clergyman and abolitionist helped establish the Church of England in Maryland, as well as the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. He established a scheme for establishing parish libraries in England and America, and in 1723 he formed a group of associates to carry on his work. The Waterloo Clerical Lending Library in Waterloo, Quebec, was founded in 1845; twenty years later the library was moved to the parish of Dunham. Later edition of one of the Pope’s principal writings. "Great as a man, a scholar, an administrator, and a priest, Benedict’s claim to immortality rests principally on his admirable ecclesiastical writings" [of which this is one] (Catholic Encyc.). First published in 1741 following his elevation to the Papacy, it is an adaptation to diocesan administration of the general ecclesiastical law. Because of its influence this book is called by Schulte, "one of the most important, if not the most important, modern work in canon law." (Idem.).
