A collection of pieces on Orkney folklore originally written in the late nineteenth century, including traditional Wedding and Funeral customs, tales of the Spanish Armada in Orkney, Seal-Folk (seals who changed into human form), an old long ballad on the same topic "The Play of the Lathie Odivere", and more. Stirling: Eneas Mackay, 1930. No dustwrapper, slight bumping to spine ends and corners of orange boards, otherwise a good clean tight copy, with black titles on spine and front all still clear. of this hard-cover book. Nine stories by the author, based on traditional folklore and superstitions of the Western Isles of Scotland, some are traditional tales re-told by the author, who has, according to his foreword, "often to have taken very great liberty in the way of alteration and addition". Inscribed by the author on page before half-title "To Nurse Young / with kind regards from the Author / Yarrowlea 1st Dec/38". No dustwrapper, some bumping to spine ends and corners of dark red boards, also a little bit of wear to sides of spine, an old newspaper clipping (1934) pased inside front board, a previous owner's name, inkstamp and date (1929) on half-title, another owner's embossed initials on title page, but otherwise a good clean tight copy, with gilt titles on spine still clear, of this hard-cover book. Deals with the author's theory that traditional tales of fairy folk and similar in Britain actually refer to aboriginal inhabitants displaced by later migrations of peoples. Also that the seal folk of legend are really Eskimos who were swept far off course in their kayaks. 205pp, 20 b&w illustrations.. First Edition. Hard Cover. London: John Bowyer Nichols and Son, 1844. No dustwrapper, top inch of the right-hand side of spine strip is missing, also a small piece at right-hand side at bottom end. Some bumping to corners of dark green embossed boards, gilt title panel on spine is still bright. Original owner's note inside front board (Rec'd Dec 6th 1844), binding only just barely starting to split inside front and back covers, but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. An early volume issued by the Camden Society, this one contains four Mediaeval metrical romances, namely "Sir Perceval of Galles" (Syr Percyvelle), "Sir Isumbras" (Syr Ysambrace), "Sir Eglamour of Artois" (Syr Egyllamowre), and "Sir Degrevant" (Sire Degrevvaunt), all given in their original Middle English.
