Condition: VERY GOOD+ book / VERY GOOD jacket: book has an owner name on fep; jacket has light edgewear along top edge. An early (1922) attempt at trying to understand the role of women in the colonial period in America, women until then largely ignored. The author made extensive use of diaries, letters, and other contemporary sources available to create an absorbing portrayal of women in both the northern and southern colonies. There is of course much more known today, but an informative and eye-opening read nonetheless.

Dow, Boston as publisher.] 12mo, brown blind-stamped publisher's cloth / gilt cover illus and spine decoration, 323 pp, [12 ]pp of publisher advertisements, frontispiece engraving (Sisters of Bethany, by O. Pelton,), title page engraving. Condition is VERY GOOD- : typical rubbing and bumping to corners, rubbing along edges, spine head and tail have tears, lt. scuffing to covers, owner name on fep, internally very clean and tight, excepting the tissue guard for the forntispiece which has foxing. Includes a very helpful (and interesting...) appendix "A Course of Reading.

Engraved frontispiece and title page from the first edition (Philadelphia: Key and Biddle / Edward C. Biddle, 1833). Frontispiece engraving "Meditation" by William Boxall / engraved by George B. Ellis ; title page engraving "Sunday Evening" by W. Hamilton / also engraved by George B. Ellis. Title page for this 1836 edition follows, published by Desilver, Thomas & Co. 24mo, ribbed leather, title in gilt on front board, ribbon bookmark present but detached, 320 pages. Condition is VERY GOOD: binding is tight, light rubbing to extremities, toning and light foxing to endpapers, foxing to engravings around edges, light scattered faint foxing throughout. A nice copy.
