Comprehensive reference for household education, including science, literature, the arts, etc., illustrated with engraved plates. Rust colored textured cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black, 510 pages plus publisher's 1879 catalogue at rear. Light rubbing to the extremities, gilt bright and clear, good hinges, text block damaged as described, plates a little age-darkened, pages clean and free from names or other markings.. First Edition. Scarce book of verses to use for Valentines, some flattering, some insulting, with a hand colored folding frontis of a man in wide breeches and spurs, but with the bottom of the frontis cut evenly with the book, losing what was probably a caption below. Mid 20th century dark green binding with Valentine in gilt on the spine, 7" tall, 28 pages. Light external wear, newer endpapers with a modern name and address stamp on the front free endpaper, binding sound, pages clean with some minor age-toning and light margin spotting, no other markings.. Charcoal grey linen-like cloth with heavy gilt spine lettering, 416 pages, dustjacket. The book is in very good condition with minor scuffs along the bottom edge of cover on both sides of the book, hardly any other discernible edgewear, with sound text block, good hinges, clean pages with no names or other markings. The mylar protected dustjacket is not priceclipped and is also in very good condition, with some grey and white paint dabs at bottom of spine, some very minor rubbing to spine ends, and mildly chipped corners, little to no additional wear. . First book on English dialects, in a mid 19th century binding, with the armorial bookplate of English divine and antiquary Henry Thomas Ellacombe (1790-1885) on the front pastedown (name is not on the bookplate; was identified through Wertcounty Studies Library website, and was engraved by Burnell). Externally worn in three quarter smooth brown calf over marbled boards, brown spine label, raised spine bands, all edges tinted red, title page printed in red and black, 5.75" tall, pages numbering to 178 but with a pagination error (typical for this book) that omits pages 143-172. The rebinidng resulted in renewed endpapers and replaced blanks at front and rear.
