Striking cover design by Victor Reinganum. Bookplate of the late collector Rolland Comstock on the front paste down. As usual with Wain (1925-1994), the dialogues (and interior monologues) are full of wit, comic spirit, and psychological insights. Signed copies of this volume are uncommon. SCARCE SIGNED. CONDITION: Covers slightly splayed, some foxing to fore edge and bottom edge. Internally clean and bright but with very slight crease to top corner of pages. About Very Good in a Good price-clipped dust jacket that has a couple of nicks and some soiling to the covers.

"Paths of Glory" was the Book of the Month Club choice for June 1935. The book also was the basis for Stanley Kubrick's 1957 film of the same name starring Kirk Douglas. Genève: Éditions du Sablier, 1920. First Edition. French author Romain Rollands novella about two adolescent lovers in Paris, Pierre and Luce, during World War I. A beautiful production bound in full morocco, the book features 16 striking woodcuts by the Belgian graphic artist Frans Masereel. One of 1,250 numbered copies printed on Vélin pur fil du Marais, Pierre et Luce was the eleventh volume published by Éditions du Sablier. Masereel and French poet René Arcos established the Geneva publishing house in 1919. Rolland, a lifelong pacifist, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1915. PHYSICAL DETAILS: 16mo (6 1/4 x 4 7/8 inches; 162 x 120 mm), 176, [4] pages, in full morocco binding with gilt borders, six raised bands to spine, spine titles and top edge gilt. CONDITION: A bit of minor flaking to the spine, some small tears to the fore edges of a couple of pages, couple minor stains. A Near Fine copy of a beautifully produced book, enriched by Masereel's woodcuts.

New York: Random House, 1945. First Edition, First Printing. Small Octavo 7 1/2 x 5 inches; 190 x 130 mm), 127, [1] pages, in gray cloth, in an illustrated dust jacket by Baldwin Hawes. Christopher Isherwood's novel about the making of a film, based on his experiences as a screen writer. But it's much more than that: it's a meditation on the threat of fascism and the increasingly dire situation in Europe in the 1930s. This is the true first edition; the U.K. edition followed in 1946. CONDITION: Toning to extremities and to pages (printed on cheap wartime paper). The dust jacket is price-clipped, soiled, and has some small tears and nicks, especially at both ends of the spine. Very Good/Good.

And his hero, the ghostly General Andrew Jackson, tries to help him out, especially since city officials try to cover up their graft by pinning the crime on young Andrew. A satirical novel by Dalton Trumbo that's listed in Walter Rideout's "The Radical Novel in the United States 1900-1954."
CONDITION: Rubbing and soiling to boards and top edge, some toning to the page edges, a few scattered stains and a couple of small tears, not affecting any text. The dust jacket is rubbed, soiled and has some nicks and closed tears. The flaps are trimmed but the $2.50 price remains intact. About Very Good in a similar dust jacket.

Octavo (8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 213 x 138 mm), 286 pages, in black quarter cloth spine and green cloth boards, dark gray top stain, titles in gilt to spine, in an unclipped, illustrated dust jacket. The sequel, in the form of a novel and play, to Faulkner's Sanctuary (1931). This is the true first edition, first printing (Chocktaw instead of Choctaw on page 21 and jacket designer listed on front flap as M. McKnight Kauffer instead of E. McKnight Kauffer). CONDITION: Boards slightly splayed, sunning to top of boards. Internally a couple of small stains and page edges lightly toned. Very Good in an unclipped dust jacket that has some nicks and tears, stains, foxing to the lower wrapper, as well as rubbing to the front panel where it meets the flap.

SIGNED by John Edgar Wideman on the title page. An Advance Review Copy with the publisher's materials laid in. This is the story of Reuben, a lawyer, who represents people in a Black ghetto of Pittsburgh in their dealings with the White authorities downtown.
The novel is set in Homewood, the Black neighborhood of Pittsburgh where the author grew up. "Wideman's anger and sadness evoke a series of powerful images that will burn long in the mind and conscience." (Booklist)

SIGNED by Xiaolu Guo on the title page and dated 14 Jan. 08. The story of Fenfang, who travels 1,800 miles to seek her fortune as a film extra. The novel draws on the author's own filmmaking experiences and is illustrated with haunting photograps that capture daily life in China.
Xiaolu Guo was born in a fishing village in south China and studied film at the Beijing Film Academy. She published six books in China before moving to London in 2002. She was named one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists in 2013, a huge honor.

CONDITION: Fine in a Fine dust jacket that, by design, is noticeably smaller than the book itself. A very attractive copy.

CONDITION: Fine in a Near Fine, unclipped dust jacket, with slight sunning to spine, light soiling to the real panel, and the lightest edge wear. A beautiful copy.
