Descripción:
Ballantyne & Co., London, 1907; First Edition Privately Printed; 8vo, 16 pages. Essay by Arthur Symons lamenting the dearth of native acting talent in Britain, reserving his highest praise for visiting Americans Edward H. Sothern and wife Julia Marlowe, whose Shakesperean talents he holds above reproach. "There is no actor on our stage who can speak either English or verse as these two Americans can.... Who is there on our stage who has completely mastered the first two requirements of acting? No one now acting in English except Julia Marlowe and Edward Sothern." Symons then goes on to cite examples from the couple’s recent performances in Romeo and Juliet , Hamlet., and Twelfth Night. Very Good Plus, in printed stiff wraps. Edward H. Sothern and Julia Marlowe’s engraved bookplate affixed. Pages unopened. A significant tribute, linking the British and American stages. Rare.

Descripción:
, circa 1860; 8 1/4" x 6 1/2"; 24 pages; brown paper wraps. Hand written prompt book of popular American comedic actress Julia Daly for her role in a one act play entitled "Absence Of Mind," playing the character of ‘Jerusha Doolittle,’ colorful Podger Family cook/housekeeper who rules the domestic roost with an iron hand and a yarn-spinning, oath-spouting tongue which never tires. The geographic setting is not specifically identified, but references to Vermont likely indicate somewhere in New England. A thoroughly American work, with reference made to Uncle Sam, Thomas Jefferson, the American language, and the ongoing Civil War ("this little family quarrel we’re havin’.") Other named characters include Master Podger, dipsomaniac owner of the estate; a daughter, Miss Podger; shiftless son John Podger; and ‘Irish,’ a red haired young boy recently hired by the Master for odd jobs around the property. The fourth wall is broken at the end of the play after… Leer más

Descripción:
Henscheverlag Kunst und Gesellschaft, Berlin, D.D.R., Germany, 1979; First Edition; 8vo, 362 pages; illustrated. The 1920’s writings on the German Expressionist Theater by notable actor/director Leopold Jessner (1878-1945) who during WWI became manager of the Berlin State Theater, and whose repeated use of a stylized staircase in his productions led to the industry term "Jessnersteppen." Considered on a par with Brecht and Reinhardt, Jessner fled Germany in 1933 for the safety of Hollywood, where he worked until his death, never achieving in his lifetime what many believe to be his rightful place in the history of German Expressionism. Illustrated with numerous theatrical photographs of the period. Very Good, in a Very Good dust jacket that has a small chip at the top edge of the front panel. Text in German.

Shown here is school benefactor Squire Brown (Ernest Cossart), come to offer support to Headmaster Arnold (Cedric Hardwicke), who has come under attack for his disciplinary policies, as Mrs. Arnold (Josephine Hutchinson) looks on.
