Bungay: C Brightley and T Kinnersley, 1804 First edition in 2 volumes comprehensively illustrated with high quality plates and maps. The Reverend Blomfield drew on a variety of sources, eg Oliver Goldsmith, Bruce to produce a work which covers a wide range of topics including 'animated nature', astronomy, geology and 'mathematical geography' as well as a tour of the world as it was known then. Blomfield clearly wanted to produce a work that was so comprehensive that it was the only work that anyone would need to read on those subjects. The plate listing only refers to around half the plates and maps. Both volumes retain the original marbled boards which are rubbed, and have new pigskin leather spines and corners and new endpapers. The spines do not have labels. Volume I, 827 pp, contains frontispiece, vignette title page, preface, text covering geology, nature, europe, and much else, and 9 full page engravings, 10 full page maps, 1 folding map and 1 folding chart. Paris: Chez De Hansy le jeune, 1774 A very good copy in newer full morocco binding with fold out map by Robert de Vaugondy. M. de Freville was a teacher, who wrote a variety of works, including for children. This book is notable in that it gives one of the first accounts in French of Cook's 1st voyage in the Endeavour, 1768-71. The bindings have raised bands and gilt titles and dates to spines. They are in near fine condition. The endpapers are marbled in a near match for the original marbling on the page edges. New blanks have been inserted at front and rear. Vol I: half title (giving the alternative 'Hydrographie...as the title); title page with 2 ink signatures across the lower half (the ink is visible to verso); Preface v-xlviii; fold out map; text with decorative headpiece and tailpieces pp 1-518; Index 519-522; errata. Paris: Marc Orry, 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit, who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work, based on careful observation, formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover, because at some point in its history, it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers, used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page, which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Roterdam: Arnould Leers, 1658 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition in largely contemporary full leather binding with portrait of Jaques Amprovx, 11 full page plates and 33 engravings in the text. The engraved title and 2 leaves of the table of chapters are provided in facsimile. Attributed to Charles de Rochefort, the Pastor of the French Protestant Church in Rotterdam - although there has been considerable dispute over the authorship. The vocabulary is by Father Raymond Breton. This copy has been rebacked and restitched, retaining the original contemporary boards with corners rebuilt. A new matching spine with raised bands and title label has been added. The original pastedown endpapers have been retained with a large armorial bookplate to the front pastedown and some old ink notes to the rear pastedown. New free endpapers have been added. London : Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1808 A fair to good copy of the second revised edition of Dr Barry's comprehensive account of the Orkney Islands in contemporary full leather binding. With folding map and 11 full page plates. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands, decorative gilt compartments and title label to spine, with titles and gilt border to front board. It is clean, but with wear to corners (with leather loss), and the top and bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the front spine joint. The endpapers are marbled, with the armorial bookplate of F Monteith Ogilvie to the front pastedown, and the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian book collection to the fep. Stirling : Printed and sold by M Randall, 1817 A good copy in probably contemporary half leather binding. With folding frontispiece and further folding plate. The binding has gilt compartments and titles to spine. It is clean with wear to spine ends, edges and corners. Light wear to spine joints, which are sound. Boards are marbled with light scuffing. Internally, there is a messy signature to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents: fold out frontispiece, title, dedication, preface and contents pp xi; text pp 1-279 with folding plate. Very clean internally with light toning to paper.

London: Bennet Griffin at the Griffin in the Great Old Baily, and to be sold by Christ. Wilkinson at the Black Boy, and by Sam Keble at the Turks-Head in Fleetstreet, 1684 A very good copy in recent half leather binding with marbled boards. With double page county map and numerous illustrations. The binding has gilt titles and gilt bands and the endpapers are new. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to 'The Nobility and Gentry', Preface to the Reader; double page map and text with full and in text illustrations (140pp). No index or errata. The binding is in fine condition. The contents have occasional marking (the odd mark, page browning - particularly to edges); and occasional loss to corners without text loss (title page - edge of top corner, p123 - same, p123 and 125 - sm loss at edge). Edinburgh: James Thin, The Mercat Press, 1974 A near fine copy of the 1974 reprint from the 1903 edition published by Alexander Gardner. The binding is bright and clean with light pulling to spine ends and a couple of small spots on the front board. Top edges with a blue tint. Contents complete and very clean. Wrap with some browning to spine and edges and a small hole half way up the front spine fold.

London: T Becket , 1774 A fair copy of the 3rd edition of this scarce work, in contemporary binding with folding frontispiece. Holwell (1711-1798) was an employee of the East India Company and a surgeon. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767 and was temporary Governor of Bengal. He survived the incident known as the 'Black Hole of Calcutta' and this work contains an account of his experiences together with other works. With folding frontispiece 'representing the Monument erected at Calcutta, in Memory of Sufferers in the Black-Hole Prison'; title page; dedication pp i-vii; half title and text 432pp. The full leather binding is complete but the front board is detached and the title label to the spine is damaged. There is some edge wear and scuffing but the binding could be easily repaired. The stitching is sound. The frontispiece is complete - with a small repaired tear where it is attached to the book. Lerwick: Johnson & Greig, 1938 A good copy of the 1st edition with photographic frontispiece and 13 f and urther photographic plates. In the original red cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. The binding has a cocked spine which is faded and pulled. The front board has gilt titles and is bright and clean. Back board with some lighter spotting, bumped corners and a light corner crease. Internally there is a signature to the front pastedown which has offset slightly to the free endpaper. Contents with half title, frontispiece, title, contents and foreward pp viii; text pp 1-256 with appendix and 13 plates. Contents in very good clean condition with the occasional light spot.

London: Henry Colburn, 1825 A fair 2 volume set in contemporary half calf binding with 2 hand coloured frontispieces and a large folding map. The bindings have gilt lines and title labels to spines and marbled boards. There is general rubbing to surfaces and edges with fraying and small loss of leather at spine ends and corners and some paper loss at the edges. The spine joints have wear and there is some splitting at the front spine joint of Vol I at the bottom although the bindings are currently sound. Corners with some turning with a bump to the top back corner of Vol II. The title label of Vol II has small loss at the top. London: C Rivington, 1735 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary binding. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the map. An important work because of the account of central America, one of the few recorded by an outsider. Cockburn, Thomas Rounce, Richard Banister, John Holland, Thomas Robinson, and John Ballman, found themselves 'naked and wounded', stranded on the shore at Porto-Cavalo after being taken by Spanish 'Guarda-Costa'. They made their way inland and trailled around 2,400 miles across Central America to Panama. The account was a best-seller, although initially regarded as a fake because of the level of danger and privation it portrayed. The panelled calf binding has been repaired to reinforce the corners and edges, and provide a new spine with raised bands and title label. It is in very good condition. LONDON : J Pemberton, D Browne, 1732 A VG copy of this rare and interesting work by John Macky (published anonymously). John Macky (d 1726) was a Scotsman and a government agent or spy. According to sources he informed the British of James II's intention to invade England in 1792, and his network of spies was vital to the discovery in February and March 1708 of Jacobite plans for the invasion of Scotland. This book, in the form of a series of letters, is written with considerable knowledge and authority. He travelled extensively in the region, dying finally in Rotterdam in 1726. This copy is newly rebound in half leather and marbled boards with raised bands to spine, gilt tooling and gilt title label. Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. London: John Murray , 1879 A good copy of the 7th edition in the original decorative cloth binding with black and white frontispiece and numerous illustrations throughout. The binding is bright and clean. The spine is slightly darkened and there is wear to the top and bottom of the spine, together with edges and corners. Internally, the original endpapers are present - the front endpapers with a slight split beginning to appear at the joint. The contents are complete and in good to very good condition. There are some small edge tears - mostly to the top margin affecting the half title, frontispiece, title page and dedication. These have been repaired with archival paper tape. There is small loss to the side margin of page 31 where the book has been poorly opened - the text is not affected. Some top page corners have been turned over at some point. 32 pp publisher's catalogue dated September 1880 at the rear.

Dublin: G Perrin for S Price, W and H Whitestone, J Potts, T Walker, C Jenkin et al, 1780 A fair copy of the 1st Dublin edition of Uno von Troil's account of his visit to Iceland with Joseph Banks and Dr Solander in 1772. It was first published in Uppsala in 1777 and the English version is taken from the German translation of 1779. Dr Von Troil studied divinity, oriental and northern languages and antiquities. He was introduced to Dr Banks when he was staying in England. The book is in the form of correspondence and contains a wealth of observation from the visit. It is in a contemporary full calf binding with gilt lined raised bands to the spine and red title label. There is leather loss to the spine which has also lost the head and tail band. The front board has a bumped top corner and a paler section towards the bottom of the board. There are a couple of scuffed areas which might have been wormed at one point. Bottom corner turned. London : Benjamin Tooke, 1699 A fair copy of the 3rd edition of this scarce work, first published in French in 1696. With frontispiece, folding map, 2 folding plates, 1 single page plate, a folding table and an illustration in the text. Louis le Comte was Jesuit mathematician, sent to China as part of a Jesuit mission at the behest of Louis XIV. He mainly worked in Shansi, and, after his recall to Paris, published an account of his experience in the form of 8 letters. The work provoked controversy and debate about Chinese Rites. This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library. The cloth binding has gilt titles, date and reference numbers to the spine. It is in very good condition. The endpapers have a Bath reference library bookplate to the fep with reference numbers to the top. There are no other library markings. The endpaper joints have been reinforced. London: Richard Bentley, 1837 A fair copy of Vol II in the original publisher's boards with inscription at the fep dated August 11 1838. The writing is a bit difficult but it looks to be to John Beecroft (1790-1854) who became Acting Governor of Fernando Po in 1830. The inscription says 'John Beecroft a present from his friend McGregor Laird Esq'. The binding was designed to be temporary and has not worn well. Part of the spine with the title label is preserved inside the book. The boards are intact. The pastedown endpapers have what look like the remains of wax blobs stuck to them. Contents: frontispiece with loose guard; title; contents list pp iii-vii; text 1-351 - End of Mr Oldfield's Journal with one further plate; 353-411; half title to Appendix; text 415-420; vocabulary 421-447, End. Contents are very clean. Pages are untrimmed and there is some foxing, particularly at the page edges. Written by Tulisen, the Chinese Envoy, and translated by Sir George Thomas Staunton. The binding is in near fine condition, with gilt lines and titles to spine and marbled boards. New endpapers. Internally: large folding map; title page; preface; contents; chronological index; narrative pp 1-223; half title - Appendix; 4 appendices pp 227-330; The End. The map is complete and clean with some repair. There a couple of repaired paper edge tears and a brown mark in the bottom margin of p165. Light spotting to title page. Contents in very good clean condition.

London: Henry Colburn, Publisher, 1843 A very good copy of the 2nd edition (published a year after the first and considerably enlarged) in newer cloth bindings. With hand coloured frontispiece and 2 black and white plates to Vol I and black and white frontispiece and a map to Vol II. Commander Bingham entered the Navy in 1820 and led a party storming the fort of Tycocktow in January 1841 during a naval expedition to China. He was injured shortly after, but was involved in the capture of Canton, and for that was made Commander in July 1841. He wrote and published his first account in 1842, and then, after it was well received, produced this enlarged 2nd edition which has an expanded introduction which covers more of the 'Opium question' and other additions. This copy is in black cloth bindings with blind ruled lines to spine and gilt titles and volume numbers. Both volumes are sound and tight with light scuffing and wear to edges and corners and slight scuffing to board surfaces. New endpapers.… Leer más
