Boston: Jordan, Marsh, [ca.1890s] / (NY: Munro, 1881.). Brown wrappers lettered in black. Slight chipping to edges, a very good copy. Issued as No. 16 in J.M. & Co.'s Popular Standard Novels Series. This is actually an issue of Munro's Pocket Magazine for 1881, rebound with a new cover. Illustrated with plates. In addition to the title story, there are nine stories by George Augustus Sala, part of a serialization of A FAMILY AFFAIR by Hugh Conway, and various other poems & stories. According to an editorial within, Vasili's book BERLIN SOCIETY was suppressed for having satirized Count Bismarck, an attractive portrait of whom is included. A scarce magazine.

NY: Hurst, 1901.. Original pictorial wrappers, portrait of Nye on front cover. Chipping to spine and corners, paper browned, about very good. Issued as No. 327 in The Hawthorne Library. An uncommon issue of this book, which had a lot of different versions.

Highland Falls, NY: Black Cat, 1922.. Pictorial wrappers, stapled. Some old tape residue on fore edge of front cover, spine splitting, very good generally. One of the very last issues of this short story magazine which began publication in 1895.

Dublin: Talbot Press, 1917. First edition.. Original olive printed wrappers, stapled. Both covers detached, covers chipped at edges, otherwise in very good condition. One of the first Irish "Slum Dramas", first performed at the Abbey Theatre in December 1917. Gogarty did the writing, with some anecdotal material supplied by Joseph O'Connor. Quite scarce.

London: Faber and Faber, (1981). First British edition. Black boards, spine lettered in silver. A fine copy in a very slightly rubbed dust jacket. Signed by Carey on the title page. The first edition was published in Australia in 1981, by the University of Queensland Press.

London: Hutchinson, 1902. First edition, Colonial issue. . Tan wrappers printed in black & red. Moderate edge wear and rubbing, old stain to upper corner, hole in back cover and last leaf; a very good copy. Issued as a volume in Hutchinson's Colonial Library. The end papers bear ads for the Colonial Library series. Not common in this issue.

NY: Ogilvie, (1881). Original green printed wrappers, stapled. 168 pages. Spine partly chipped away, covers chipped at edges, a couple of pages starting out of first gathering; about very good. A fragile book printed on cheap paper. The copyright statement is by Street & Smith. Possibly the first edition, though Ogilvie seems to have put the book out in a number of formats in 1881. Meta Victor, who also wrote as Seeley Regester, was a prolific author of Dime Novels and other works.

NY & London: Stokes, (1895). First edition.. 12mo. Green cloth, front cover lettered in black and designed in silver, spine lettered in silver. Frontispiece (a stylish cafe' scene). A little shelf wear to spine ends and tips, a very good copy. Issued as a volume in The Bijou Series. Short stories, humorous and satirical, of New York in the 90s. Includes the title story, "High Etiquette in Harlem", "Ban Briordy's Gitaway Shadder", and others. Copies exist in several other colors of cloth, including brown & mustard.

NY: Mitchell Kennerley, 1909. First American edition, unknown printing.. Red cloth lettered in white. A couple of small spots, small label on inner front cover, an unusually bright and attractive copy. The first edition was published in London the previous year (John Long, 1908). This copy has the imprint of The Robert Kerr Press on the copyright page. A novel of the Chicago Haymarket Square anarchist bombing of 1886.

London: Elkin Matthews and John Lane / Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1894. . First edition. Yellow decorative cloth designed in brown, lettered in gilt. Unsightly chip from base of back cover, some dust soiling, a clean very good copy basically. Attractive binding design. Essays on works by Meredith, Borrow, Ibsen, Stevenson, Henley. 400 copies printed.

Chicago: Donohue, Henneberry, (c.1887). 375 pages. Reprint - first published by Belford, Blarke in 1886. Red-brown cloth, spine and front cover designed and lettered in black, spine titled in gilt. Fraying to spine ends, some shelf wear, paper quite yellowed, very good generally. See Wright III: 5336. Issued anonymously.

Chicago: Donohue, Henneberry & Co., [ca.1900, perhaps later].. [226]pp. Small 8vo. Publisher's decorated cloth, with "Gem Edition" at the base of the spine. Old dampstain to fore-edge of book, with some white staining, otherwise very good.

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1907). First edition. Red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and white. Frontispiece and 4 plates. Ownership inscription dated 1910 on front end paper, faint edge wear, a bright and attractive copy.

NY: J. Selwyn Tait, 1894. First American edition. 32mo. Wine cloth ruled and lettered in black. Issued as Volume 6 in The Pseudonym Library. Rubbing to edges, chipping to lower corners of cloth, several ink stamps of a former owner, a few leaves have soiling; generally only very good otherwise.

Paper browned, light shelf wear, quite a nice copy. First published in England as an Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual in 1883. CALLED BACK was a best-selling book in Britain, and established the pattern for the "Shilling Shockers" which were to become so prevalent.

NY: Norman L. Munro, 1884.. 8vo. Original tan wrappers designed and printed in black. 112pp. + 4 leaves of publisher's ads and three blank leaves at the rear. Issued as Vol. 1, No. 215 in Munro's Library, Pocket Size. Published Sept. 4, 1884. Chipping at edges of covers and base of spine, large piece gone from upper corner of cover, just affecting a few words of text on the cover, some creasing, about very good. At the bottom of the front cover is the legend: "SPECIAL EDITION". Base of spine chipped away, edges of covers and first leaf quite chipped, with some loss to text on cover, paper browned, about very good otherwise. Issued as No. 14 in the GOLDEN GEM LIBRARY. Unfortunately, the date is chipped from the spine, and so is uncertain. First published in England as an Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual in 1883. CALLED BACK was a best-selling book in Britain, and established the pattern for the "Shilling Shockers" which were to become so prevalent..

NY: Macmillan, 1892. First edition.. Blue buckram, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, device in gilt on lower front cover. Green floral end papers. Shelf wear to spine ends, hinges loose but intact, bookplate on front end paper, a clean very good copy. A long (742pp.) melodramatic novel containins some elements of the occult and much religious philosophy. Some mysterious elements, a secret murder in the past, etc. The author was Henry Holt, the American publisher. A second edition, revised, was published the same year.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1896 (copyright 1895). . First American edition. Red buckram designed and lettered in silver. Top edge stained red. Spine slightly darkened, a few marks to page edges, a strong very good copy. Pictorial bookplate on inner front cover. Ten short stories.

London: John Camden Hotten, (1869). First edition. Green cloth, blocked in blind on covers, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Brown printed end papers, bearing ads for the Prudential Assurance Company. Frontispiece and four plates in colour, also a colour representation of a winged head on the title page. Inner hinges taped, which tape has discoloured, some splitting along upper hinge, moderate edge wear, a very good copy in general. Publishers catalogue at rear dated 1869. Wolff 3679, his copy identical to this save for having dark brown end papers. Issued in Hotten's Illustrated Library, so indicated on the spine.
