Paris: Chez Humblot (de l'imprimerie de Quillau). Very Good+. 1767. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 2 vols in 1 pages; Contemporary full calf, mottled decorative staining, flat spine separated into panels by gilt rules with floral tools in gilt in the center of each panel but the second, which has a red morocco titling label lettered in gilt, swirl marbled endpapers, edges of the text block marbled to match. A lovely binding of the time of publication, showing just a touch of the lightest rubbing along the hinges and corners; a clean and pleasing copy in choice condition. A significant and sucessful novel in epistolary form by one of the masters of the genre, Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni (1714 - 1792). The author was born in 1713 as Marie-Jeanne Heurles de Laboras and was to endure a dramatically adverse situation before she was a year old, when her father was convicted of bigamy. The usual form of the author's name is a result of her 1734 marriage to an actor and… Leer más

New York: Printed for and Published by the BOOKSELLERS. Fair. 1796. First Edition Thus. Disbound. (4), ii, (1), 4-144 pages; To the whole is added a Sketch of the life of Our Blessed Saviour, The Holy Apostles &c. Recommended by the Revd. Rowland Hill, M.A. Poem. Quite Scarce; informative and historical despite its flaws. Front leather covered board present (detached and chipped/rubbed at all edges), partial leather backstrip, rear board missing, lacks ffep. Detached frontispiece illustration (copper engraving?) of a tree of human qualities, rooted in Faith and Repentence, a trunk of Hope and Love, branched with Fidelity, Compassion, Prudence, Charity, etc. and with Grace shining down from above. Sadly, the frontispiece is missing lower left corner, title at bottom and a strip of the lower right margin. Original owner's name on verso "Jane Barclay her book / Ano Domnia 1798", still a compelling image. Titlepage is also detached and chipped on all edges (all printed… Leer más

Amsterdam: J. Fr. Bastien. Very Good. 1774. First Edition. Hardcover. xii, 331 pages; Contemporary marbled sheep, flat spine decorated in gilt, black label, swirl-marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Binding somewhat rubbed and cracking along the front hinge. This is a very good copy of the FIRST EDITION. This work was reprinted later in the same year, under a different title: "Observations sur la trois siecles de la Litterature francoise, a M. S *** [l'abbe Sabatier]. " This has the same imprint, but is in 12mo. The text is the same according to Barbier III: 621 & 637. De Manne attributes this book to G. -M. Butel-Dumont, but De Backer does not agree. Abbé Jacques Lenoir-Duparc, a Jesuit scholar, wrote this bitter critique of a work by Abbé Antoine Sabatier de Castres entitled Trois siecles de la litterature francoise. He accuses Sabatier of partiality, affectation and an excess of moral zeal in rendering his judgments upon the works of certain French… Leer más

Paris: Chez Laporte Libraire, rue Christine, M.DCC.CXV. Very Good. 1795. Hardcover. 12 vols pages; Twelve volumes, 8vo, contemporary full calf, flat spines, covers with a decorative "cloud" or flame pattern, executed in acid-staining, delicate gilt borders. The flat spines have gilt-lettered labels in red and black; two of the other panels have gilt-tooled decorative "urns" -- the other two panels have an all-over pattern of gilt tools within a diagonal grid of rules. There are plum-colored endpapers, and the edges of the text-blocks are decoratively stained to match the boards. There is some cracking along the hinges and some light rubbing and wear, but the boards are all attached, and this is a sound and handsome set of a landmark of French Eighteenth century book illustration. With 33 full page plates after designs by Marillier, Eisen, and Le Barbier -- engraved by de Ghendt, de Longueil, de Launay, Halbou, Lingée, Fessard, Godefroy, Née, Ponce,… Leer más

London: Printed in the Year MDCCXXI. Good+. 1721. Softcover. 4 p.l., 3-144 pages; Disbound, small octavo, gathered in fours. Untrimmed edges. This anonymous volume makes an appearance in Halkett and Laing (IV, 315) -- attributed as "[Thomas Fulford?]" The English Short Title Catalogue repeats this, watered down a bit to "Sometimes attributed to Thomas Fulford." Fortunately, the DNB steers us in a different direction. Under the long article about one "Charles Dodd" we learn that the man who wrote under that name was really born as Hugh Tootel. As an English Catholic, he had ample reason to be evasive of easy identification. DNB attributes this 1721 work to Tootel/Dodd, without any question marks or equivocation. The first part of the title is a clear clue to the author's Catholic faith, being a salutation from the Catholic Mass -- PAX VOBIS (meaning "peace to you"). The long subtitle can easily be parsed as philosophically Catholic.… Leer más

Patavii [Padua]: Excudebat Josephus Cominus. Very Good+. 1740. Hardcover. 80 pages; Bound in vellum-backed marbled boards with tan leather spine label -- uncut (early 19th century? ) The spine is somewhat darkened, but generally an excellent copy of this scarce little book. An early owner has copied Brunet's complimentary description on a slip of old paper -- "Ce petit volume de 80 pp. Est le plus rare, peut-etre, de ceux qui sont partie de la collection des auteurs latins imprimes par Comino..." [Brunet V: 616]. Also quoted on this same slip, from Hebenstreit p. 223 "Editio ex Cominianis rarissima..." And from Ebert number 22114 "Very few copies printed" According to Brunet, this is a preliminary offprint of material included in the third volume of Comino's edition of Muret's works. A charming small volume, admired and sought by classicists for two centuries. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has… Leer más

London: Printed for the Author. Fair. 1760. First Edition. Disbound. vi, (2), 120 pages; Sold by T. Kinnersley in St. Paul's Church-Yard; and to be had of all other Booksellers in Town and Country. OCLC 504455151 ESTC t126448 This book lacks most of the leather backstrip and the entire rear board; the front calf covered board is present, but detached. The ffep and title page are still attached to the front board; the rest of the text block are held firmly by the original stitching and remainder of the spine. Text is clean, but for a couple brief pencil notes, marking where the reader left off. Quite a scarce volume; a good cadidate for rebinding. "Most of the pieces in this entertaining miscellany originally appeared in Lloyd's Evening Post." These anonymously published essays skip from a reminiscence of the author's charming youthful infatuation with his nurse and a string of other women into adulthood, to a day at an auction house, to his arrival at… Leer más

Prag [Prague]: bey Wolfgang Gerle,. Very Good-. 1773. First Edition. Softcover. 16 pages; Unbound (possibly extracted from a volume). Very light soiling to the title page and final page. Ignaz von Born [1742-1791] was a mineralogist and metallurgist, who became a significant figure in botany, and other branches of natural history. He was also a prominent freemason, (whose writing influenced Mozart, both as a mason, and as a major source for the structure and intellectual foundations of "The Magic Flute." Indeed, some writers suggest that Born was the inspiration for the role of Sarastro). Born was also a satirist, and an influential anti-clerical writer. Wikipedia calls Born "the leading scientist in the Holy Roman Empire during the 1770s in the age of Enlightenment." He was born into a noble family, in the Grand Principality of Transylvania. He was educated in a Jesuit college in Vienna, but left the Jesuits after sixteen months to study law at Prague… Leer más

Holmiae (Stockholm): Joh. Laur. Horrn. Very Good. 1731. Hardcover. Engraved Plates; Very good, in 19th century red half morocco with some wear and rubbing at extremeties. This is the preferred edition of the great work on Scandinavian numismatics (rare first edition was 1691) -- with 1780 bibliography added at end. Illustrated by engraved plates of coins. In 1663, he was enrolled at Uppsala University where he first studied theology and later archeology. In 1668, he entered service as a draftsman in the Antiquity College (Antikvitetskollegium) which had been established at Uppsala by King Gustav II Adolf during 1667.
