Publisher's green cloth with decoration in gilt, image of a warrior on horseback on front board. Mild rubbing to extremities, a few pages chipped at the upper edge, else fine. Loti traveled from Tangiers to Fez in the company of the French minister to Morocco and was most enthusiastic about his experiences, delighting in the people and culture.

An account of the life and work of botanist and explorer Sir John Kirk, who traveled extensively with David Livingstone and served for 20 years as British Administrator in Zanzibar.

Spine cocked, brief gift inscription on front free endpaper, else very good. Good served as a Presbyterian missionary in West Africa from 1882 until his death in 1894. He traveled extensively in the region, learning the Bulu language and making a study of native religious beliefs. He also collected entomological specimens on behalf of W.J. Holland of the Western University of Pennsylvania, who contributed an Appendix to the book.

Short tear in cloth along rear joint at head of spine, paper cracked over front hinge, occasional penciled lines in the margine; else sound and clean. No dust jacket. Willis was a mining engineer who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. "In 1929, after attending an IGC conference in South Africa, Willis traveled the length of Africa, accompanied by his wife and supported by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, to study the geologic structure of the deep rift valleys that bisect the East African plateau. His study convinced him that the valleys had not developed because of separation, as most geologists thought, but were the result of "ramping" caused by compression and vertical movement" (ANB).

Binding sound, text clean, with minor foxing. Fictional account founded on real experiences and adventures in South Africa in the early nineteenth century. Mendelssohn I, 986.

Very light bump to lower front corner, Hallett's bookplate on the front pastedown, scattered foxing. Dust jacket has some soiling to the rear panel and a few small chips and tears. Describes a journey from Algiers to Tangier via a route that included Oran, Tlemcen, Oudja, Taza, Fez, Meknes, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakesh.

Spine toned but legible; clean and tight. In addition to being a Presbyterian missionary, the author was an accomplished linguist and a careful and interested observer of native life and natural history.

Original dark blue cloth with bright gilt lettering and decoration. Corners rubbed and bumped, spine ends rubbed. Crease in cloth on front board. Some signatures a bit loose, but none detached. Occasional smudged pages; text otherwise unmarked. Reading served as a missionary to Gaboon, and later as a commercial agent for the United States. He recounts his party's journey from Philadelphia, which took them through Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Gold Coast. Includes some discussion of the American Colonization Society's efforts in Liberia; slaveholding in Africa; commerce along the coast and rivers; prospects for a railroad and commercial development of the interior. Blockson 1628.

Springer and his wife spent 14 years as missionaries in central Africa.

Binding sound, contents clean. 353 pp, with 51 gravure plates, but lacking the folding map. The author traversed the Marotse country and visited the Gonye and Victoria Falls, and continued to Bechuanaland, Matabeleland, and Mashonaland (Mendelssohn I, p. 788). "Despite Johnston's hunter-like attire and pose in the frontispiece, this work is primarily one of travel.... He does embark on hunts after hartebeest, impala, and ostrich, and describes a lion hunt near Salisbury" (Czech p. 146).
