Author's edition, "with all his introductions, various readings, and the editor's notes." 375 pp + extensive publisher's catalogue illustrated with many engravings from drawings by Birket Foster and John Gildert, as well as 11 original albumen photographs. A good copy bound in original blue cloth decorated in black and gilt, with all edges gilt. Mild spine slant, corners rubbed, scuff mark on rear board. Paper split over hinges; hinges sound but appear to have been re-glued. Early owner's name and date on verso of front free endpaper.

11" x 14" photograph showing members of the American Samoan Delegation--headed by famed Machu PIcchu explorer Hiram Bingham--being received by local chiefs, as a Samoan man films the proceedings. A slightly different version of this image (with the Samoan photographer removed) was published in a 1931 U.S. Government report with the caption "County Chiefs Leiato of Fagaitua and Faumunia of Aunuu Entertain Commission at Fagaitua." The Delegation, which also included Rep. Guinn Williams, Sen. Joseph T. Robinson, and Rep. Carroll L. Beedy, was there to hear the grievances of Samoans living under U.S. Naval Administration governance and to determine whether to make changes to American policy and procedures. Photographer Merl LaVoy (1886-1953) was present as a cameraman for British newsreel producer Pathé News. Minneapolis, MN: Walker Art Center, 2003. Hardcover. Very Good. 335 pp, with illustrations, index. Light wear to edges, slight bowing to boards; text clean. This exhibition "brings together the works of fifty-seven artists, each of whom has exploited the conceptual and formal properties of the medium with great self-awareness. In doing do, these artists defied the traditional hierarchy that valued painting and sculpture above other media, introduced the performative as well as the vernacular into their imagery, and advance the chimerical qualities of the media" (Foreword). Extensively illustrated throughout in b/w and color.

One corner of rear board bumped, otherwise nice condition -- clean, tightly bound, unmarked, with minimal handling wear. No dust jacket. One of the most important books of the New Topographics movement -- in which photographs inspired by the man-made, depicted everyday subjects such as parking lots, warehouses, and suburban housing "with a beautiful stark austerity, almost in the way early photographers documented the natural landscape" (Tate Museum).

Kobe, Japan: Mitsumura Printing Company, 1909. Hardcover. Good. 11 x 14.25 inches, oblong. String-tied decorative cloth boards. Six pages of text, followed by 16 full-page collotype plates and one double-page folding panorama. Light soiling and wear to boards, final leaf with a repair to the margin (not affecting image). National Association of Cotton Manufacturers bookplate on front pastedown and ink stamp on title page call number at lower right corner of front board, otherwise unmarked and internally quite clean. This edition is undated, and we have not been able to determine whether it is earlier or later than another edition that is dated 1909 and credited to Kobe-based photographer S. Ichida (Ichida Sota, 1843-1896). In 1909, the Kanegafuchi Spinning Company employeed more than 14,000 workers and was the largest cotton spinning company in Japan. 5" x 10" cloth album (labeled in the back as a "Ward's Album for Unmounted Photographs") with thirty-six 2.25" x 6.75" photographs inserted each side of 18 thick cardstock leaves. A few of the images have some hand-coloring. Leaves were original mounted on cloth stubs, but the cloth has deteriorated and the leaves are now laid in loose. Otherwise very good condition. Ten photographs show scenes at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition -- including the Temple of Music, the Electricity Building, the Mines Building, the Grand Canal, gardens and fountains, parts of the Midway, and an event in the arena involving Native Americans (possible the "sham battle" staged between six Indian tribes and the U.S. Infantry stationed at Bufflo, which took place on the closing day of the Exposition, November 2, 1901). We have not identified the other locations shown, but they are likely in New York or New England and include some lovely images of boaters and houses along a lake shore, one shot of a tennis game, and several… Leer más

Boudoir card (5" x 8") albumen photo on the mound of "Richardson, Artist" showing a team of horses pulling a large model factory building with the words "Glenwood Mills Dress Silks" on the roof. Not further identified, but most likely the Glenwood Mills in Easthampton, Massachusetts, which, according to an account in the Fitchburg Sentinel, began manufacturing dress silks in August, 1881.  We have been unable to locate an image of that factory for comparison, likely because it burned to the ground in 1887.  Several flags are mounted on the building, suggesting it may have been part of an Independence Day parade. In any case, it surely would have been an attention-grabbing form of advertising. Mount is chipped at one corner and rubbed at the others; image very good. .

Very good. 10" x 13" sting-tied cloth album containing 119 photographs, of which 86 are relatively large and appear to be professional and 33 are amateur snapshots. The professional photographs are a mixture of albumen, gelatin silver, and platinum prints.  Most have penciled captions. They range in size from 4" x 6" to 8.25" x 10.5", with the majority being at least 5.5" x 8". There is one damaged photo (not included in image count) and one page with a photo missing, a few leaves detached from binding. Otherwise, condition is very good. This fascinating album is composed primarily of photographs purchased during the course of travels in India, Java, Thailand, and Cambodia in 1906.  The compiler was Maud Clark Reynolds (1864-1953), an American woman who spent much of that year traveling with her husband, Arthur G. Reynolds (1868-1935). Arthur appears to have made his fortune in the mining industry in Colorado, after which the pair moved to Pasadena, and then Gilroy, California. Both of their… Leer más

Very good. 7" x 11" string-tied album containing 190 corner-mounted photos., most measuring 3.25" x 5.5". Some blank spots where photos were removed, a few images damaged, but condition is very good overall. This interesting album appears to have been compiled by a man from Calgary, Alberta, who was employed in the railroad industry before serving in the military -- possibly the Royal Canadian Engineers -- during World War I. An "M. Jeffrey" appears several times in the album, and we suspect (but have not been able to confirm) that he was the compiler. The first section of the album includes many good photographs of the locomotives, cars, tracks, depots, dams, and bridges (some under construction) of the Canadian Pacific, Grand Trunk Pacific, and Canadian Northern Railways. Very good. Original 8 x 10 photograph, uncredited and undated, showing five parade floats with messaging from the John F. Barker Produce Company, a Phoenix-based fruit and vegetable wholesaler incorporated in 1914. This photo may date from April 1925, when an article in the Arizona Republic notes the company's participation in a "Prosperity Parade" held as part of the "Elks High Jinks and Industrial Show" in Phoenix. The first two floats are titled "Before Irrigation" and "After Irrigation," with cactus-covered scrubland compared to a bounty of produce. The other floats bear displays showing off eggs, fruit, and local products. .

Photographically illustrated. Simple red buckram binding, somewhat rubbed, a few pages with penciled lines in the margine, all else very good or better. Each issue covers a single topic. In this volume: Photographing Flowers and Trees; Street Photography; Intensification and Reduction; Bromide Printing and Enlarging; the Carbon Process; Chemical Notions for Photographers.

Very good. Original 6" x 8" black and white photograph on a 10" x 12" mount, captioned "Mairposa Co. Exibit" (sic) and credited "Simon & Robinson Photog." Very good condition, blank on the back. Undated, but ca. 1915 based on the period when Simon & Robinson were active. Their firm is described in a 1913 promotional book for neighboring Merced County as "especially interested in public affairs and the development of the county." This image was presumably taken at a state or regional agricultural fair and was intended to showcase the bounty produced by Marisposa County farmers. Three long benches and two side tables are shown covered in artfully arranged melons, potatoes, cucumbers, squash, corn, grapes, and other fruit and flowers.

Two large photograph albums containing more than 400 photographs from a prominent sporting family in Edwardian and Interwar Britain. Members of the family played cricket and polo, raised horses, participated in fox hunting and steeplechase events, and visited the estates of similarly inclined members of their class. Major Pascoe William Grenfell Stuart (1868-1954) had a career on the stage as a singer and actor before becoming secretary to the governor of the Windward Islands, and from 1896-1901 aide-de-camp to the governor of Queensland. During World War I, he was a major in the Remounts, a division of the Royal Army Service Corps that procured horses and mules. He added "French" to his surname in 1917, in order to inherit his maternal uncle's estate at Marino. He and his wife Elizabeth had two children: Margaret Granville Wandooline Stuart (1896-1950) (called Wanda, married name Wilson) and Lt. Col. Robert Fitzroy Hamilton Pascoe Stuart-French (1903-1983). Softcover. Very good. Softcover student notebook, 8.25 x 6 inches, containing 51 b/w photographs (2.5" x 3.5") mounted on graph paper leaves, most with handwritten captions in Vietnamese. Dated 1972 on the front cover (with additional handwritten titles or notes we have been unable to decipher). Two items stapled together are laid into the notebook, both in French, on the letterhead of the Indochina Operational Group of the Red Cross. A cover letter addressed to the National Societies (of the Red Cross) dated March 5, 1973, reads (roughly) "It gives us great pleasure to send you the first set of photographs of the Red Cross in the Republic of Vietnam, reported by M. Olaf Stroh during his recent trip to Hanoi and Haphong" and requests feedback. The attached sheet, a photocopy, provides a list of eight Activities of the Red Cross in Vietnam shown in "Series 4" of the photographs. Bulletin 52, July 20, 1927. 64 pp, with many illustrations from photographs and a two-page spread showing the photographic rendition of colors with various emulsions, filters, and illuminants. Some soiling, moderate handling wear. Foreword: "This bulletin tells how best to apply light in photography, offers suggestions on the wide range of lighting effects which can be produced with MAZDA lamps and suitable equipment, and shows the color rendition obtained with different emulsions and filters." Includes sections on incandesent lamps, lighting for portrait photography and for commercial photography, and darkroom processes. Not found in OCLC.

Dust jacket shows minimal shelf wear and one small (1/2 inch) tear at head of spine. This book "offers a stimulating panorama of the state's cultural and scenic attractions. Japan Hydrogen Industry Co, Ltd. [Onahama, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan], 1947. Cloth album, 12 x 8.5 inches, containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only, with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II, the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid, the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company (also known as Nihon Suiso Company), which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937, became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. Very good. Three 8" x 10" photographs, one credited on the verso to Orby G. Kelley Jr., a photographer who worked for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper (Norfolk, VA) in the 1950s, the other two unmarked. The credited photo is an informal portrait of Charles Manuel Grace (1881-1960) -- born Marcelino Manuel da Graça and popularly known as "Sweet Daddy Grace" -- and the others show an excited crowd, hands raised in worship, with a sign reading "Sweet Daddy Came from Jerusalem, Not North Carolina." In one, a woman has her head thrown back in apparent religious ecstasy. Born in the Cape Verde Islands, Grace came to the United States in his early twenties, changed his name, and embarked on a career as a holiness preacher. In 1924, he founded his own denomination, the United House of Prayer for All People, which over time grew to have Houses of Prayer (Grace did not call them churches) as far south as Tampa and as far north as Buffalo, with the greatest concentration being in poor communities in Georgia and… Leer más

Very good. Flexible leather binder containing 29 black and white, 8" x 10" photographs inserted back-to-back in clear sleeves. Stamped in gilt on the cover with the name of the owner/recipient, James Stubbers, as well as the Hiram Walker name and logo. Each photo has a typed caption. Fine condition. Hiram Walker & Sons was founded in Windsor, Ontario, by American entrepreneur Hiram Walker, who focused on creating, branding, and marketing an uncommonly smooth and palatable whisky. His signature product, Hiram Walker's Club Whisky, proved extremely popular in both Canada and the United States, and by 1882 the company was offering 27 varieties of whisky. In 1889, after the U.S. Congress passed legislation requiring the country of origin to be shown on all labels, the brand was re-named Canadian Club. Real photo postcard showing the interior of a Western railroad depot with considerable character and detail. Very mild crease to one corner, a touch of wear to the edges; near fine. Although someone has written "Texas RR" on the back, and there are signs posted relating to the Denver & Rio Grande and to the Fort Worth and Denver Railway, we suspect this station was actually in southern Colorado, given that there is a print of Sheridan's Ride on the wall (a Union general on a Texas wall seems unlikely at this time). Among the objects visible in the photo are an elkhorn chair, footstool and table; at least eight taxidermy specimens (elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, buffalo calf, eagle, owl); photographs and prints; and a railroad map, ticket agent's sign, and rack of timetables.
