London: Printed for W. Nicoll, 1764. [4], 43, [1 blank] pp, with the half title [detached but present], as issued. Disbound, light dusting, else Very Good. On the dismissal of General Henry Seymour Conway, a distinguished military man and Member of Parliament who had spoken against the Crown's imposition of restrictive measures upon the American Colonies. According to the Dictionary of National Biography, Conway was "dismissed from his offices and employments for opposing George III's arbitrary measures." This pamphlet defends Conway's dismissal: "It has always been the undoubted right of the Crown, to make and remove the officers of the army at pleasure. This is a part of our constitution, and to endeavour to rob the Crown of it, is an invasion of our constitution, and the readiest way to bring those liberties into danger, which we thus injudiciously mean to defend." Boston: Edes and Sons, 1781. [3]-22 pp. This copy lacks the half title; it prints the two-page Order of the House preceding the title leaf, and the Address of the Legislature. This copy lacks the text of the two Acts collated after the Address. Disbound. Except as noted, Good+. The title page is preceded by the "order of the House, dated Feb. 26, 1781, that the Address and two appended bills be printed and distributed" [ESTC]. The Order is signed in type by Caleb Davis, Speaker of the House, and John Hancock. The "two appended bills," not present here, call for an adjustment of the State currency, payment of money owed on loans, and authorize the Treasurer to borrow additional funds to prosecute the War. The Address, signed in type by Jeremiah Powell and Caleb Davis, is a rallying cry for the people of Massachusetts to support the onerous Revolutionary War budget. Inscription, slightly trimmed, at head of half title: 'The Hon. Geo. Bradley, with Mr. Dickins's ComplimentsLondon, February 15, 18__.' Arnot takes a critical look at British policies under George III. Throughout his reign "our national councils have been misguided, and policy mistaken." He scores England's actions that led to the American Revolution, "a storm of rebellion, excited by measures equally impolitic, oppressive, and unjust, and ending in the premature, unnatural, and violent dismemberment of a valuable portion of the empire." Portsmouth, N.H., 1812. 27pp, with the half title. Untrimmed, disbound, scattered foxing and an ink numeral, Good+. A fine speech blending the celebration of July 4 with recollections of Washington's achievements. "Our national anniversary, and the fame of WASHINGTON are mutual guarantees for each other, that neither shall be forgotten." On the establishment of the Constitution Webster says, "It was their commercial embarrassment and distresses, which first convinced the States of the indispensable necessity of a new General Government." Warning Federalists who oppose the ongoing War of 1812 Webster says, "Resistance and Insurrection form no parts of our creed. Boston: From the Orrery Press: Printed by Alexander Martin, 1795. 23, [1 blank] pp. Disbound, scattered light foxing and light wear, Good+. Minot was the leading historian of Massachusetts, especially of Shays' Rebellion, and a founder of the Massachusetts Historical Society. This pamphlet prints the Society's Act of Incorporation at pages 13-14; and names of Subscribers alphabetically at pages 15-23, including Paul Revere, Jeremy Belknap, James Bowdoin, and other eminences. Minot discusses the Society's purposes: "Since there are evils beyond the power of man to prevent, it is his duty to alleviate their effects, and minister consolation to the objects who are destined to endure them. Such is the principle on which you, Gentlemen, are associated." Minot recalls some of the "calamitous" fires that Boston has suffered. FIRST EDITION. Evans 29086.

Newbury-Port: Printed and Sold by John Mycall, and Draper & Folsom of Boston, 1778. Stitched, 12 leaves as issued. Light wear, Very Good. This is a scarce Revolutionary-era almanac, which issued from Boston as well as Newburyport. Ours is "identical in content with the Draper & Folsom (Boston, 1778) edition, except that the list of roads at end is less extensive" [ESTC]. This imprint was issued in two states-- the other lists the printer as J. Mycall instead of John Mycall. The almanac describes "The grand Pilgrimage to Mecca," warns of "The Danger of exorbitant Taxes," advises "How to remove Freckles," discloses a cure for cholera and flux, and prints "Excellent Receipts for the Jaundice... New York: [Douglas McMurtrie], 1937. Original printed wrappers, light wear. 386 Lots. Annotated, sometimes messily. Very Good. With desirable early and presidential Americana.

London: Printed for David Ogilvy and Son, 1799. viii, [9]-110 pp. Disbound, lacking the final advertisement leaf, and torn at the corner of leaf 37-38 [several words and letters affected]. Otherwise, Good+. The book first issued from New York in 1798. This is the only other 18th century edition. "Dunlap became manager of the Park Theatre in New York, where early in the season this play was successfully produced. Interest is added to the work because of the documents printed at the end. It was reprinted in London the following year" [Church]. Andre was hanged as a British spy for his role in Benedict Arnold's treason. But his noble demeanor won the admiration of everyone who encountered him. Dunlap says that the play's "principal incident is the sad catastrophe which his misconduct, in submitting to be an instrument in a transaction of treachery and deceit, justly brought upon him." Widely scattered light foxing. Very Good. Bookplate of Joel Davis Madden, Jr., on front pastedown. Alexander Garden was a soldier in Lee's Legion, under Light Horse Harry Lee, during the Revolutionary War. He was also aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene. Born in Charleston, he was educated at the University of Glasgow. He returned to America in 1780 to join the Revolution, as a member of Lee's Legion. He was an officer in the Society of the Cincinnati. The first series was published in 1822 under the title, "Anecdotes of the Revolutionary War." This is the first edition of the second series. Garden dedicates this series to Major-General Thomas Pinckney, "President General of the Society of the Cincinnati." His dedication is dated October 12, 1828. The first American edition, originally printed in London earlier in Secker's pamphlet defended the Society and the Church of England against the attacks of Thomas Mayhew and Charles Chauncy, on an issue dramatically illustrating America's growing separation from the Mother Country: the establishment of the Church of England in the Colonies. "In Massachusetts the attack on the evil of an over-all establishment of religion was a response [to] the efforts of the Church of England to extend its influence into the heartland of American dissent." Bailyn Ideological Origins of the American Revolution 254. Secker and his allies asserted that the Society's charter mandated conversion, not only of the Indians and Africans, but of white colonial 'heathen' as well. Mather argues for "the Royal Favour and Protection in the undisturb'd Enjoyment of the Liberties of our Churches and Schools." His Preface, in the form of a dedication to "Mr. Holden, one of the Directors of the Bank of England, at London," emphasizes "that it would by no Means do well for [the King] to take away from the People of New-England any of their Privileges," which were "confirm'd unto them by the Charter, which was granted to this Province by King William and Queen Mary of glorious and immortal Memory." New York: Hugh Gaine, 1771. vi, [1 errata], [1 blank], 240 pp. Stitched and untrimmed, as issued. Occasional light dusting, Very Good plus. Housed in a custom box, with gilt-lettered spine title. Chandler was a Connecticut-born Episcopal priest and Yale graduate. His pamphlets were an important addition to the Church of England's arsenal in its dispute with Chauncy and others who resisted the Church's influence in America. Proof that politics follows religion, Chandler bitterly attacked the Continental Congress, cast his loyalties with England, and emigrated there in May 1775. What Chandler "and other articulate defenders of the status quo saw as the final threat was not so much the replacement of one set of rulers by another as the triumph of ideas and attitudes incompatible with the stability of any standing order, any establishment" [Bailyn Ideological Origins of the American Revolution 318]. Boston: Kneeland and Adams, for Thomas Leverett., 1768. 205, [1 bookseller advt.] pp. Lacking the half title, some lower portion spotting to first few leaves. Contemporary ink correction on page 27. With the contemporary ownership signature of Jacob Hurd. Good+ or so. Thomas Chandler was a Connecticut-born Episcopal priest. His 'Appeal to the Public' [1767] was a major weapon in the Church of England's dispute with Reverend Chauncy and others who resisted the Anglican Church's establishment in America. "The clergy of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania delegated him as a leading advocate of American episcopacy to prepare a plea for the sending of bishops to America..." [DAB]. Chauncy refutes it here. Chauncy was the most prominent American voice for the authenticity and validity of non-Episcopal ordination; he passionately disputed the notion that "the established religion of England was that of its dependencies also. English bishops wrote as if Congregationalism were no religion at all" [DAB].… Leer más

Boston: Printed and Sold by J. Kneeland, in Milk-Street:- Sold also by the Printers & Booksellers, 1774. [24]pp, stitched, toned. Portrait of Oliver Cromwell on title page. Light wear, Very Good. In this pre-Revolution Almanac, Low's printing of Cromwell's Speech dissolving Parliament is a not-too-subtle expression of American hostility to British Rule. "It is high time for me to put an end to your sitting in this place, which you have dishonored by your contempt of all Virtue, and defiled by your Practice of every Vice. Ye are a factious Crew, and Enemies to all good Government..." Evans 12837. Drake 3229. ESTC W22503.

The almanac prints the important pre-Revolutionary Resolutions of the Town of Boston, urging development of domestic industries and discouraging European importations, in view of the "heavy Debt, incurred in the Course of the late War...Moneys that should go in Payment, are now to be taken from us, without our Consent, to support, independent of the People, and in greater Affluence, the Officers of the Crown; as also to maintain & keep up a large Body of Regular Troops in America." The Almanac prints a table of distances of New England towns from Boston, "with the best Stages to put up at." This is the issue with 'Vacations at Havard [sic]-College' at the bottom of the last page. Drake and ESTC note this issue, but with 'Harvard' spelled correctly. This Almanac celebrates the Stamp Act's repeal with a patriotic preface by Ames, lauding Americans' "exertion of that noble spirit of Freedom, which every thinking honest Man that has ever been galled with the chain of slavery is possessed of-- a spirit which GOD grant no tyrant may ever be able to extinguish amongst us." He encourages Nationalism, so "that when ever a Virginian shall visit this part of the Land of Freedom you will be no niggard of Hospitality." Ames denounces the "absolute and despotick sway" of the Pope, pities Europeans thus benighted, and recommends popular education so that "the common people" will not be "slaves" to aristocrats.
