Bobbs Merrill Company. Indianapolis.,1926. Early edition. Inscribed by the author.--- For my boy friend Cote from his 76 year old "boy" friend Uncle Bob Sherwood Last of Barnum's Clowns, New York Columbus Day 1932---. Illustrated with mono photo plates and a few plates with music and lyrics to songs. Very good copy in very good dustwrapper with colour illustration to front panel. Chip to top of front panel, not affecting lettering or image but overall a very good example.

A. Ferroud. - Librarire Dea Amateurs. Paris. 1892. LIMITED EDITION. Small 4to. (9.5 x 6.5 inches). Beautifully illustrated with twenty fine etchings throughout the text after Rochegrosse, each with a tissue guard. One of 250 copies, from a total edition of 500, on Velin a'Arches paper. This copy is out of series with presentation inscription, signed by the publisher, on the limitation leaf. Finely bound by Bickers and Son in early full dark green morocco. Spine with raised bands with gilt ruled lines. Compartments ruled and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled line border on boards and board edges. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Decorative gilt roll to the turn-ins. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A very good copy in an attractive late nineteenth century leather binding that has some very light wear to the edges and the spine darkened to an attractive brown colour but is overall very good indeed.

Chatto & Windus. London. 1888. FIRST EDITION. 3 Volumes. 8vo. (7.5 x 5 inches). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of volume I, "A. P. Watt. From the Author". Original brown cloth blocked in metallic blue in a geometric pattern to the spines and front boards. The spines are lettered in gilt. Floral patterned endpapers. Spines rolled a little, some light spotting to endpapers and title pages but generally a clean, tight and bright copy. Overall a better than very good set. Alexander Pollock Watt (1838–1914) was the first successful British literary agent. His agency, started in 1875, is still active today and is, in fact, the longest-established literary agency in the world. He acted as Besant's agent, and also his literary executor.

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. --- To Jane Engelhard, with all best wishes and prayers - Ever devotedly in Notre Dame Father Ted Hesburgh.--- A very good copy in lightly rubbed dustwrapper. Housed in a blue cloth chemise and blue morocco spined slipcase with raised bands. Compartments with dark blue box designs and lettered in gilt. Cloth on boards. A very good copy with a warm inscription from Hesburgh, a constant and powerful figure in the civil rights movement for over 50 years.:

N.P. ,circa 1990s. LIMITED EDITION. One of one hundred limited copies of Ted Hughes Football poem with two hand coloured football related pictures by Chris Battye signed by both Hughes and Battye. The work (14.5 x 29.5) is single mounted, framed and glazed with the overall piece measuring 25 x 39cms.:

James Maclehose and Sons. Glasgow. 1912. LIMITED EDITION. 4to. (10.6 x 8 inches). One of 200 copies, from a total edition of 700 for England and America, on hand made paper and with the plates printed as proofs on Japanese Vellum. Each of these 200 special copies has an original print of the etching "The Lion and the Unicorn" , signed by Cameron, as the frontis and is numbered and initialed by the publishers. The etching was not issued separately. Illustrated throughout with 434 etchings, each with the original measurements, date of the plate, number printed and other general notes by Frank Rinder. Some occasasional light offsetting from the plates to the text pages opposite but generally it is faint where it occurs. Endpapers a bit browned but overall a very good clean and tidy copy in the publishers original delux binding of beige cloth on the boards with a white vellum spine, lettered and ruled in gilt. A few minor spots to the vellum but it is still clean and white and the gilt still bright and… Leer más

Garden City Publishing Company. Star Books. New York. Circa 1931. EARLY U. S. EDITION. Inscribed by Shaw. 8vo.(8.4 x 5.7 inches). Shaw has inscribed the half title page; " Inscribed to Mr. Robert F. de Graaf. G. Bernard Shaw. 14th November 1931. I vehemently repudiate the portrait on the jacket. It has the horrible quality of being very like somebody else - I cannot for the life of me remember whom. You should have picked out something more impressive. No intelligent Woman would trust a man with a face like that." A fine clean copy of the book in publishers cloth and the original silver, black and white dustwrapper with portrait illustration of Shaw to front panel, designed by Robert De Graaf. Minor rubbing and a couple of small chips to extremities but overall a very good example indeed. Housed in a grey cloth covered clam-shell case with grey leather label, lettered in gilt.

Hurst and Blackett. London. 1856 . FIRST EDITION. Three volumes. 8vo. (7.8 x 5.2 inches). Integral publishers advert leaves at the end of each volume (iii, i, ii) but bound without the publishers catalogue in volume one. Some minor foxing to a few pages but generally a very good clean copy finely re-bound by Bayntun of Bath. Half brown morocco. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt decoration. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Tan cloth on boards Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine quality, highly attractive leather binding. Loosely inserted is a 4pp hand written letter from the author (" Your affectionate Dinah") to "My Dear Alice" ( her God Daughter, the subject of the poem "My Godchild Alice"), closely written in black ink on four sides of folded leaf, each side measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches. The letter is undated but circa 1859 and discusses, among other things, the publisher Alexander Macmillan's approval of Clarence Dobell's illustrations for her… Leer más

The first copy of the first of all our books. April 17th 1936. Teddy. ----- Pages affected by small damp stain to the fore edge at the bottom 1.5 inches, but not spreading onto the page surface. Some foxing, mostly to the first and last few pages. Overall a near to very good copy in a poor dustwrapper with loss to both the top and bottom of spine and with several chips to the panel edges. ---- Bought, by me, direct from the estate of Crankshaw's widow, Clare.:

William Heniemann. London. 1898. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to. (13.4 x 11.5 inches). Inscribed on the front paste down endpaper by Nicholson to the Daughter, and her second Husband, of his Mistress and house keeper Marie Laquelle; "For Georgette and Norman Holder with love from W. N. who did the pictures. London. Xmas. 1916". Decorative colour printed front board, lettered and showing the illustration for The Bus Driver, plus twelve full page colour lithographs after the original woodblocks. Brown paper covered boards, printed in colour litho. Plain tan cloth spine. Some minor foxing to endpapers and the edges of the boards are rubbed and bumped. Spine cloth is frayed and split,with boards still firmly attached, but overall a very good copy of this beautiful book with an interesting association. Housed in a felt-lined clam-shell box. Victor Gollancz Ltd. London. 1932. TWO FIRST EDITIONS. One is the hardcover cloth bound issue and the second is the paper issue. Small 8vo. (7.5 x 4.5, cloth bound volume, 7.3 x 4.3 - Paper bound). Both are Inscribed by Crankshaw, the paper volume to Theatre critic Kenneth Tynan, and dated 1956, the cloth bound to Crankshaw's brother in law, Ernest Carr, in 1932. Overall these are both very good copies in very good dustwrappers with minor toning to the spines. hb---- Bought, by me, direct from the estate of Crankshaw's widow, Clare.

Robert Graves. 1957" on the front free endpaper. A very good copy in publishers plum cloth with white paper labels, printed in black, to the front boards and spine. In the scarce original dustwrapper which has some chipping to the edges but is still generally in good condition. Higginson A30.

The Roycroft Printing Shop. New York. 1896. First edition, pirated by Elbert Hubbard, founder of the Roycroft movement. 8vo. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "I repudiate all responsibility for this bowdlerised piracy. Elbert Hubbard, who perpetrated it, is dead. Why not bury it with him? G. Bernard Shaw. 27/5/22." Additionally inscribed by Hubbard on the front free endpaper, "To Leonard D. Abbott with all good wishes from his friend Elbert Hubbard." Original cloth-backed boards. Housed in a blue half morocco slipcase and chemise. A fine copy.

The book is protected in a red cloth chemise housed in a red morocco spined slip case, made by James Macdonald Co. New York. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Lettered in gilt.:

Williams and Norgate. London., 1921. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo.(10.2 x 7.8 inches). Illustrated with 96 plates. Publishers original green cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling to spine. Binding a bit rubbed and bumped but overall sound and the gilt still bright. This copy has a full page original ink self portrait of Orpen on the front blank endpaper, showing the artist painting the famous American Wall Street lawyer and art collector, Paul Cravath. ---- The drawing is inscribed by Orpen at the bottom of the page "My very dear Mr Cravath-It was a big job to tackle on those hot summer afternoons you must admit. All good wishes in 1922.-------(?) William Orpen". The drawing shows Cravath, a large man who stood 6ft 4inches, sat posing while a much smaller Orpen, the heat rising from his head and his sleeves rolled up, paints the portrait. ------ The book has the bookplate of the prolific author and traveller Cecil Roberts who has written a note on the blank verso of the frontis piece about… Leer más

Fine copy in original full green calf with gilt lettering to spine and rear board. Front bopard lettered and illustrated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Inscribed by Shaw to the film and stage Actress Joyce Bland. There is a presentation inscription, not in Shaw's hand, on the front free endpaper which reads; 'To Miss Bland. With every good wish & in memory of the Malvern Festival. July 1934.'. The second inscription, By G B S, on the half title page reads; 'Inscribed to Joyce Bland Bernard Shaw Malvern 16th Aug. 1934'. A very good copy in the publishers delux leather binding of full tan morocco. Spine with raised bands. The compartments are ruled and lettered in gilt and decorated with a blind ruled multiple box design. Boards with a blind ruled blocked line design within six ruled border lines. Salmon pink endpapers. Top edge gilt. Doubleday & Company, Inc. New York.,1974. FIRST EDITION. 8vo.(9.5 x 6.5 inches). Inscribed by the author, and with tipped in typed letter, signed. The book is warmly inscribed by Eisenhower to Mrs Charles (Jane) Englehard, a prominent donor to White House restoration projects and a close friend of Lyndon B. Johnson. She served on a variety of advisory committees through many administrations from Kennedy to Clinton. The letter acknowledges that the author has signed the book and sent under seperate cover. He also refers to the text of the book, mentioning his view on the Foreign service and wishing Mrs Englehard, and her commission, every success. The book is near fine with just a little creasing to the edges of the dustwrapper. Housed in a blue cloth covered chemise and fine, blue morocco leather spined ,slip case.
