Melbourne: Melbourne Publishing Company, 1919. First Edition. First edition, with beautiful colour plates by the author. Gaze was one of the most prolific authors of books for children in this period, and this fantasy about the adventures of a small girl in a world where she meets people such as the Clerk of the Weather and the South Wind is one of his most popular works. Coppertop, and its sequel Coppertop Cruises (1920), were marvellous vehicles for Gaze's fine, opalescent-hued watercolours. The plates in these, and his other Australian-published works, 'established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite' (Holden, A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy, p. 82). First published in 1883 with printed paper wrappers, both early editions of this collection are now uncommon. "On the strength of 'Under the Window' and 'A day in a child's life' (1881), 'Mother Goose' (1881) and 'Little Ann' (1883), the 'Art Journal' claimed Kate Greenaway had earned a remarkable reputation and "has obtained a position of standing among the artists of the present day" - the artists, not illustrators: clearly she had elevated herself from the prejudices surrounding illustration." Harmondsworth, Middlesex: Puffin Picture Books, Penguin Books, 1951. First Edition. Songbook of ten popular nursery rhymes illustrated by Hans Augusto Rey (1898 -1977). A German Jew who escaped the Nazis in 1940 on a home-made bicycle with his wife and collaborator, Margret Rey, Hans Rey is renowned for his best-selling children's book, "Curious George", the original manuscript for which was one of the very few things they took with them when they fled. (Puffin picture book lithographed in England by Balding and Mansell Ltd., Wisbech.). Oblong octavo, bound in illustrated paper wrappers, 18 x 23 cms, 23 pages, a very good copy.

This beautiful drawing, probably from the period when Gaze was serving in the First World War, shows a little boy at play. It is titled in pencil "Lonesome". Born in New Zealand in 1885, a whimsical artist with outstanding talent, Harold Gaze is one of the more elusive Australasian children's writers and illustrators. We know little with exactitude about his life. After being rejected for active service, Gaze reputedly studied at various art schools in London for a period before publishing his first (recorded) book illustrations in New York in 1917: I Wish I Could Fly by Rose Strong Hubbell. At the close of World War I, Gaze moved to Melbourne and launched his career with The Wicked Winkapong in 1918. He exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society Annual Exhibition in May 1919 and over the next few years his work "established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite" (Holden). Sydney: The Sunday News, 1926. Rare children's section featuring Gumnut babies 'Bib and Bub' by May Gibbs (half-page), Fatty Fin by Syd Nicholls (full-page) and other cartoons. Significant for the final sequence of the Marmaduke comic strip which appears in this issue. Broadsheet newspaper segment of four pages measuring 480 x610 mm printed in colour; the margins are heavily chipped with significant loss, a fair copy.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful books in the the Enid Blyton canon with delightful colour plates and line drawings. Small quarto, illustrated endpapers, 128 pages, frontispiece and eight full page colour plates, numerous full-page black& white illustrations throughout; bound in original decorated cloth, top-edge gilt and others uncut; some foxing, a lovely copy.

London: Isbister and Company, 1894. To describe "The Sunday Magazine" as a religious periodical is to confine it unnecessarily. Edited by Reverend Benjamin Waugh (1839 -1908), founder of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, "The Sunday Magazine" is a publication that broaches everything from art and literature to travel and poetry. Some of the Reverend's most famous hymns first appeared within these pages also. At unexpected points, one turns the page to find an illustration truly beautiful. 'Fetters are the emblem of captivity, the ensigns of restraint. Our dogs we tie, our criminals we handcuff, and formerly we chained our lunatics and our books.' (C.E. Gildersome-Dickinson, "Chained Books", p. 529). Quarto, bound in gilt-stmaped decorated green boards, all edges gilt, 856 pages, a near fine copy.

First Edition of the highly successful sequel to the Rentoul sisters' 'Australian Songs for Young and Old', with words by Annie Rentoul, music by Georgette Peterson and illustrations by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Imperial edition 336. Muir #6346. Oblong quarto, original red illustrated wrappers, 36 pages, full-page plates in black & white and other vignettes scattered throughout; old ownership details across the top margin of the front cover, wrappers a bit marked, a very good copy.

Chicago: Donohue, Henneberry & Co, 1891. The tale of a remarkable journey from California to Australia with hundreds of extraordinary wood block illustrations. Remarkable nineteenth century work linking the two continents, in very good original condition. Quarto, original decorated boards with striking silver lettering, the spine ends and external hinges are rubbed, endpapers replaced, a nice copy.

Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1935. Story and decorations by Dorothy Wall. Endearing early edition of an Australian children's classic. Second edition. Quarto, full page black and white plates, additional line drawings throughout; original green lettered papered boards; small elegant 'Margaret Hilder' ownership stamp on front free endpaper, stationeer's stamp on lower margin of title page, half-title quite browned, a very good and handsome copy nonetheless.

London: George Routledge, 1890. First edition. GREENAWAY, Kate. First edition, second issue, retaining three full-page illustrations absent from future editions. Profusely illustrated in colour, this is Greenaway's first work with Edmund Evans, the printer famous for his mastery of the wood block print. The colour printing process used in these early books was quite innovative, involving photographing Greenaway's original watercolours onto specially prepared wooden blocks, one for each of the colours used. Large octavo, original illustrated papered boards, rebacked, faint occasional spotting, a very good copy of the first edition in fresh condition.

London: Methuen, 1934. Wall, Dorothy. First edition of this scarce and finely-produced work. Although published a year after the first Blinky Bill title, the illustrative style of Bridget and the Bees harks back to Wall's delicate drawings for J.J. Hall's The Crystal Bowl, published in 1921, and suggests that it was written and illustrated well before its publication date. This is the rare English edition, which was followed by an American edition in 1935. Large octavo, eight plates in colour (including the frontispiece), rebound in half brown cloth retaining original papered boards, endpapers renewed, a good sound copy.

Paris: Galerie Lutétia, 1920. Limited Edition. GUINEGAULT, G. P.. A fine example of the pochoir printing technique fashionable in France from 1910-1930. Each of the four poems is accompanied by a circular illustration by G. P. Guinegault. [Not in Mahè.]. Four leaves measuring 350 x 225 mm, in original pochoir decorated wrappers, signed in plate, a fine copy. An exquisite limited edition of romantic poems by Jean Noury illustrated with elegant pochoir scenes by the French orientalist painter, George-Pierre Guinegault. Each leaf is shared between the letterpress poem and a large circular stencil-printed illustration of lovers at play. This beautifully preserved item is a one of five hundred numbered copies printed on Arches paper. Georges-Pierre Guinegault, born on March 27, 1893, in Rennes, France, was an accomplished artist who began his fine art studies at the age of 19 at l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Paris, 1930. A charming "album-jouet" ephemeral work using the dressing of cut-out dolls both to amuse young girls, and sneakily to educate them in the correct attire for study and school. In completely fine condition this charming and ephemeral work tells the story of Rouquette a gorgeous little girl who is beautifully dressed by her nanny. She and her sisters, messy Micheline and naughty Colette have to stay inside because of the rain, so they do some lessons causing lots of trouble. Unusually, on the fold out page all the cut out pieces provided to dress the girls and decorate their classroom are still intact; a rare children's pamphlet and a stylish example of juvenile Parisian fashion.
