Some wear to corners and edges, foot of front joints starting, but otherwise a very good copy. Edwin Lankester was an English surgeon and Naturalist. He studied medicine at University College, London from 1834-1837, and in 1843 became a lecturer of Materia Medica and Botany at the School of Medicine adjoining St. George's Hospital [The British Medical Journal, 'Obituary', Nov. 7, 1874].

Engraving from "Recueil de divers oiseaux e´trangers et peu communs/Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel," which was a combination of 'A natural history of uncommon birds' [1743-1751] and 'Gleanings of natural history' [1758-1764] by George Edwards, which both contained over 600 entries never before described, and Mark Catesby's [1683-1749] 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands,' [1729-1747] one of the earliest accounts published which described the flora and fauna in North America, containing various images of plants, mammals, fish, birds and other wildlife. Light foxing, dampstain on upper fore-edge, title page paper repair to lower margin [text unaffected] and small bookseller stamp on upper tp, o/w a very good copy with striking engravings. Dr. James Anderson [1739-1808] was a Scottish naturalist, farmer, scientist and lawyer. In this second volume of his essays, he discusses plants and their relationship to animals for food and nutrients, distinguishing certain animal breeds from others, and peculiarities in climate.

A magnificently illustrated volume, figured and described by the author, and it stands as his most famous work.
