The Century psychology series. This cataloguer distrusted B.F.'s work until he met a fifty-year-old who had spent her childhood in a "skinner-box". She hadn't suicided, graduated Oxford, won Oxford's annual "sommelier contest" a couple years ago, and so..still had taste-buds too.

The author promotes a technocratic "wageless economy" where machines and automation enable 12-hour work weeks; rails against an elite class that hoards wealth. With references to the recent conclusion of World War II and the atomic bomb. Also makes disparaging remarks about Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants who, he claims, have made American streets unsafe. The text appears to have been expanded and published at the end of the decade by J.W. Luce.

[Englewood, CO?]: David Ornsteen, 1944. Pamphlet. 10, [2]p., wraps. 8.75 x 6 in. Blank form pasted to verso of final leaf. Vertical crease. Good. Prospectus for a correspondence course around the author's plan for what he claims would be a peaceful egalitarian society that maximizes human potential and creativity. "It is the purpose of Progressive Humanology to help human beings find a solution for almost any problem that may arise, in order that progress may be attained in the matter of improving our general living conditions." Further, this will open up job opportunities: "The training and instruction you receive should qualify you to take up organizational work in your locality, and thus be rendering a noble service to your fellow citizens." With a "student application" pasted to the final leaf.

Sets forth a bold proposal for the reorganization of state government into a League of Continents and reorganization of communication through World Language, as well as other ideas like a world court and global standard for measurements.

The author, born Fernando Santibañez Puga, won Chile's Premio Nacional de Literatura. Scholars have noted the homoerotic subtext of the intimate friendship with Augusto D'Halmar that is discussed in this memoir (D'Halmar and Santiván created the utopian Tolstoyana Colony in 1905).

Corner-stapled fascicles, six to eight standard leaves with terminal leaf of tinted stock, folded once transversely to make neat 8.5x5.5 inch mailers. No address labels; very good condition. A very neat little lot in fine condition, these may have been all sent in a single envelope. The SF First Unitarian is an important institution here; this cataloguer saw and heard Anais Nin speak (good acoustics) and got several years of folk-dance instruction there. It was and is a "welcoming" church.

The March 1987 issue is quite worn, otherwise generally very good, with a few issues mildly edgeworn. Articles focus on alternative medicine, ecology, nutrition, gurus, etc. Sample headlines: "How to survive nuclear radiation," "Listening to the wisdom of plants" (with Kat and Terence McKenna), an interview with Rajneesh secretary Ma Prem Hasya, and more. The senior editor (later consulting editor) was Art Kunkin, of LA Free Press fame.

Georgist tract denouncing financial elites and the laws that enrich them. Concludes with a study of Fairhope, Alabama, a community founded on single-tax theory. Hall, a Christian socialist and follower of Henry George, founded the Free Acres Community of New Jersey. Hall helped start the back to the land movement and advocated for vacant lot gardening.
