New York: International Publishers, 1983. Hardcover. xxxvi, 763p., plates & photos; dj, facsimiles, mild wear on head and tail of dj spine, small open tear on front dj corner, hinge is delicate, else in very good condition. Collected works vol 39. Contains the correspondence of 1852-1855.

Tours: A Mame et Cie, Imprimeurs-Libraires, 1858. Both parts, abridged, but then it is the Grandville steel engravings that are the attraction here; good strong strikes if a bit diminutive, no patch on Dore' of course. Hardbound in quarter pressed morocco with morocco corner-tips over green cloth boards, old marbled endsheets, a nineteenth century custom job in sound shape, details below, but first of all, item has been sophisticated by a clever amateur. The giveaway is the much-too-strong tint (a modern dark blue) to textblock edges which clashes with book's general aesthetic; adroitly applied (edge tints are dry, stroked on with saturated cottonball) but simply not comme il faut. Done to disguise an ex library state? possibly. Further, the corner-tips have most probably been strengthened with glue. As for the item as it stands, there are trivial abrasions, and text paper is not fully alkaline and is foxed throughout. nothing else to report. Paris: Editions Sociales, 1958. 45p., stapled wraps, 4.5x7 inches, wraps lightly worn, pages lightly toned, staples rusted, else very good condition. Text in French. Les Enseignements de l'Histoire. Draws a parallel between Louis-Napolean Bonaparte's staged coup of 1851 and Charles de Gaulle's return to power in 1958.

New York: Leonard Scott & Co, 1850. Magazine. Pp.157-312p. (i.e., about 150 pages), printed doublecolumn throughout on reasonably alkaline paperstock, sewn textblock in paste-fastened green printed wraps. Untrimmed, very edgeworn with dirt and a stain to foredge and foxing to top edge, short splits and small chips to head and tail, some pencillings and here & there a little mouse-gnaw. A somewhat repulsive copy nonetheless quite securely bound and handleable. Topics include twenty pages on Welsh education, twenty again of French/English vocabulary for travelers, twenty on the geologic distribution of gold in Siberia and California (Sierras "more lofty than the Appenines"), histories of Spanish literature, ditto ancient Greek lit, twenty pages on urban water-supply and sanitation especially of London, and.. more.

San Francisco: State of California Dept. of Natural Resources Division of Mines, 1953. 144p., 6x9 inches, map, illustrated with numerous period figures and facsimiles; the heavily coated paperstock is not fully alkaline and is slightly toned throughout. Good in original wraps with binder's tape spine, as issued.

Hardcover. xvii, 415p., original khaki green cloth binding with edge wear, scratch and nick to cover, in good condition, but hinge starting at inside back cover. Ex-library book with discard stamp and small remnants of library ownership (embossed stamp of library on title-page, faint signs of removal of card pocket and date slip in back, and erasure of cataloging numbers from spine). Includes tipped-in gift slip from the editor. *Egbert p. 96. "Read the 1854 constitution of the Practical Christian Republic in [History of the Hopedale Community], pp. 397-410, for a variety of utopian theory which exhibits at once the religious socialists' tendency toward nonresistance in extreme form, the utopians' dissociation from national life, and the secular socialists' inclusion of world government in their system of thought." *Egbert p. 275.

London: Merlin Press, 1968. Hardcover. 476, 156 p., very good clothbound hardcover in dj. Facsimile reprint of the early socialist serial.

Barcelona: Estblecimiento [sic] Tipografico de Narciso Ramirez, 1856. Pamphlet. 15p., softbound sewn into plain unprinted yellow wrapper (appears original, as does the fastening thread, 9x6 inches, elaborate title page employing different fonts and a decorative woodcut (1/2 x 2 1/2 inches, shows engine and cars steaming past a township), alkaline paperstock with just a touch of marginal toning and a handful of foxing towards in the terminal leaves. A very good copy.

Berlin: Hofmann & Co, 1851. Hardcover. 64p., text in German printed in Fraktur, illustrated with humorous etchings by Scholz and other artists uncredited, foxing throughout, bound in lightly worn marble boards with red cloth spine backing. First of a series. Scholtz was a caricaturist and illustrator for the Kladderadatsch newspaper from 1848 to the 1880s.

London: Published Under the Direction of The Ballot Society, 1853. Pamphlet. 15p., disbound pamphlet in 8x5 inch self-wraps, well-adhered, slightest edgewear, handling or browning, a very good copy. No. II of at least three, which included tracts on the ballot no. 1 "The ballot in America," now ready. Will shortly appear, no. III, "The ballot in Switzerland" A brief history of the ballot in France, intended to show the reader the benefits of a secret ballot.

New York: Minister of Relations [Mexico], 1852. Pamphlet. iv, 44p., disbound, wraps. Pencil notations on blank cover sheet. Statement by the Mexican government, published in translation in New York. Garay had sold Americans what they thought were the rights to the route across the Tehuantepec Isthmus, a rival at the time to plans to build a canal through Panama. However, Mexico said the sale was not valid.

London: Jarrold and Sons, 1859. Hardcover. x, 310p., publisher's menu; small hardbound in bevelled 6.5x4 inch royal-blue boards gilt. Casing is in terribly poor shape with seriously cracked hinges, a nearly-detached spine panel that has half-inch losses both head and tail, spine titling dirty and dim. Gilt cover devices and title are still bright, it and rear cover could become part of a restoration, likewise the original brown endsheets, but not (we think) the entire spine. Textblock has fared better; the guarded color-litho frontis is about fine (innocent kids and tutor at the seaside), and all illustrations (woodcuts in vignette) are present. Text edges are badly dust-soiled and a few signatures are slightly started, with a crack down to cords at 144/5. Reading copy, or breaker.

New York: Vintage Books, 1983. Trade Paperback. lix, 140p. [facsimile pages], xxxiii [notes and chronology], trade-size wraps. Paperstock toned, nick to back cover, else very good. Reissue of the 1859 novel by an African American woman that attacked the racism of the North as well as the slave system of the South. Gates' introduction and notes clearly establish the identity of the first African American woman to publish fiction in English.

Washington DC: American Party, 1856. Pamphlet. 16p, 6x9 inches, self-wraps, ex-library, disbound, 1 inch sticker on lower left corner of front cover, some toning at edges, 2-inch chip on corner of p. 5. Carlile attacks the Democratic Party for its support for James Buchanan (future president) and the pro-slavery position.

Boston: W. Crosby and H.P. Nichols, 1851. Pamphlet. 51p, 5.5 x 9 inches, wraps, text block in very good condition, spine covering largely worn away but hand-sewn signatures intact, covers worn and corners bent. J.G. Forman (1820-1885) "minister of the Second Congregational Church in Nantucket, until recently minister of the First Church and Congregation in West Bridgewater, Mass., to which is added, a friendly letter to said church and congregation on the pro-slavery influences that occasioned his removal." He apparently preached in opposition to the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law.
