A classic study of Keats's annotations in his copies of Shakespeare and a foundational work in the study of marginalia. "Spurgeon describes the two texts of Shakespeare marked by Keats, transcribes (mostly accurately) the markings on five plays, lists what she considers to be parallels between The Tempest and Endymion, and presents a fondly appreciative Introductory Essay on the links between the writers. With a separately printed essay on the Puffin Picture Book series in general and this book in particular. Published in an edition of 1000 copies, including 100 numbered copies signed by the original editor, Lee Chadwick, Sheila Dorrell, who completed the illustrations, and John Miles, who designed the book. First edition (first printing). Near fine copies in wrappers (paperback). This is one of the unnumbered trade copies, but Life Histories is signed by Chadwick, Dorrell, and Miles. In addition, the second book is signed by the author, Steve Hare and the typographer, Fred Price. Uncommon signed.

Tokyo: Kyuryudo, 1980. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. The first survey of the work of one of the great bookbinders of the late 20th century, finely bound in full inlaid goatskin by the artist. This is one of 26 folio-sized, lettered deluxe copies, signed by Miura, and originally published at Y900,000 (about $9,000 at the time). The binding is dark blue calfskin inlaid with colorful small flower designs and whimsical silver foil spots, like pollen in a breeze. The hand-marbled chemise has a matching calf spine and edges and a burgundy suede lining. The inner slipcase is covered in red marbled paper with dark blue calf around the opening. The outer slipcase in plain sky-blue cloth. The outer box is finely crafted from paulownia wood (similar to balsa). The box is enclosed in a paper portfolio case with bone closures. The first survey of the work of one of the great bookbinders of the late 20th century, finely bound in full goatskin by the artist, with a geometrical inlay pattern, a leather chemise with laid down fiery marbled paper on the front and back, a slipcase covered in the same fiery marbled paper, an orange cloth covered slipcase, a paulownia wood (similar to balsa) two-part box, and a paper portfolio case with bone closures. In all, this is a spectacular example of fine binding at the highest level of artisanry. This is one of twenty numbered folio-sized, deluxe copies with velvet endpapers and silvered page edges. The limited edition, one of 50 copies, of this survey of the graphic designer and calligrapher Luca Barcellona's lettering work, with a custom calligraphy example, the word "Surfadelic", commissioned by the original owner. This limited issue also includes a second original calligraphy example reading "Take your pleasure seriously" laid into the clamshell box cover. Published at EUR500. The book is housed in an embossed clothbound clamshell box (7-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches). 224 pages plus a smaller text pamphlet of 32 pages inserted in four separate sections. Illustrated with more than 400 color plates. Text in English and Italian. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine folded poster used as a dust jacket. This is one of 50 deluxe copies, signed by Barcellona with an original piece of calligraphy, in this case reading "Surfadelic" on the limitation page.

This is copy 175 of 300. Laid in, as issued, are a facsimile letter about the author of an earlier book on the subject, and a printed "apologies" sheet reporting corrections. An errata slip is tipped to the colophon page. Token portfolio fine, with wrap-around band, as issued. The tokens, made of a copper alloy, are beginning to tarnish somewhat. Baltimore, MD: Printed for the Author by Joseph Robinson, 1818. First Edition. Leather bound. Good. A two-volume set on auction law from the library of Millard Fillmore's first legal partnership, Clary and Fillmore, with Fillmore's surname in gilt on the spines and with a rare example of Fillmore's bookplate affixed to the pastedown of the second volume. Catherine Parisian located just one example of Millard Fillmore's bookplate during the compilation of the annotated catalogue of the library that Fillmore built during his presidency, The First White House Library (Penn State University Press, 2010). That bookplate, for Fillmore's miscellaneous library, is in the collection of the Grolier Club. That plate was reproduced in the Grolier Club's book Lasting Impressions, the 2004 catalog of an exhibit of the Club Library's "treasures." First edition (with a numberline ending in 1). A fine copy in a very near fine jacket. Signed by Gibbons on the front free endpaper. The signature is a little smudged. With a Random House autographed sticker on the front cover (suggesting this may well have been a US import).

(N.-pl.): Adam Low, 1983. Ephemera. Very good. Two versions of the teleplay for a half-hour BBC documentary about P.D. James's use of place in her fiction, both with manuscript changes and both differing from the program that eventually aired. These scripts, written and edited by James, are significantly longer than the final program and offer insight into James' thinking about the detective novel that is otherwise unavailable. Some of the longest passages that were cut are about James's influences, including Arthur Conan Doyle, W. H. Auden, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Dick Francis, and Leo Tolstoy. These scripts offer exceptional insight into James's thinking about the detective novel and the inspiration she drew from the places her books were set. Twenty-five years after writing these scripts, James published a book-length survey of the detective genre, Talking About Detective Fiction (2009), which combined literary criticism with personal reflection on her writing.
