Descripción:
Philadelphia: B. Franklin and D. Hall, 1759. First American edition (and the fifth overall). A collectible copy from America's first Renaissance Man. The Society of Friends commissioned 4000 copies of this pamphlet, and they hired Benjamin Franklin's printing company to do the work, seventeen years before Franklin would edit and then sign the Declaration of Independence. In addition to Franklin's many civic, diplomatic, and scientific achievements, he was a successful entrepreneur in colonial America-his printing company made him rich. "By these Things it is evident, that Christ's Baptism and John's are distinct; and therefore as what God hath joined, no Man ought to put asunder; so what God hath put asunder, no Man ought to join..." (p 12). 4-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches. iv, 5-43, [1] pages. First American Edition. Text block tanned and foxed here and there. Generally very good and complete in a mid-20th century binding of half calf and brown cloth. Outer joints cracking, but sound. Previous owner's… Leer más

For more on Torres and his connection to Latin American independence movements, see Raúl Coronado's A World Not to Come, pp. 152ff. Two volumes: xxxii, 557, [1]; [ix], 530, [3] pages. [Washington, DC]: (n.p.), 1871. First Edition. Pamphlet. Near fine. A plea from a Cherokee leader, the son of the assassinated tribal leader and Cherokee Phoenix editor of the same name, to have Congress intervene in support of dropping criminal charges against him lodged in a dispute over tobacco taxes and Native sovereignty. In this statement to Congress, Boudinot protests his poor treatment as one of the first Native Americans to go into manufacturing (the production of tobacco products in present-day Oklahoma), and he makes one of his first pitches for Native citizenship, a cause he would pursue the rest of his life. "Your memorialist, however, with indescribably mortification represents that instead of receiving the plaudits, congratulations, and commendations of a country for having established the ability of an Indian to manufacture products for his own people, the doors of a penitentiary in a neighboring state are thrown wide to receive him..." He then expresses support for Native American… Leer más

Descripción:
[Washington, DC]: (n.p.), 1870. First Edition. Pamphlet. Fine. It is our desire to promote the settlement of these Indians upon farms, and secure their support from the labor of their own hands," wrote the members of the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs. The group had been formed under President Ulysses S. Grant, who in an attempt to secure peace on the Plains authorized a group of Quakers to oversee Native American affairs in Kansas and the Indian Territory. This publication prints the Quakers' request for funds to help settle 10,000 members of the Kiowa, Comanche, Apache, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Sac, and Fox tribes in Indian territory and to begin the process of teaching them to farm. The logic behind the request was the considerable sum, estimated here at $200,000 per year, required just to ship food from the nearest rail line to the Native American settlements in the Indian Territory. Farming was the only alternative, the Committee of Friends said, "unless we are… Leer más

He also describes in detail one case that Bushrod heard, a complex dispute over the ownership of a British ship seized by privateers during the Revolutionary War. Hopkinson (1770-1842) served in the US House of Representatives and as a federal court judge. His father, Francis Hopkinson, was a signor of the Declaration of Independence. [9], 10-32 pages. [Philadelphia?]: (n.p.), 1829. First Edition. Near fine. An appeal for religious faith over theology. "I have all my life avoided all knotty and disputed points of religion. I argue with nobody about the trinity or the unity of the Godhead; the mysteries of free knowledge and free will; or the profound doctrine of the atonement by the death of Christ... I profess not to understand them; and I know that much wiser and stronger men have come to no understanding about them, after centuries of learned and intolerant disputation, in which rivers of blood as well as of ink, have flowed in support of this savage and unchristian warfare... I consider religion to have nothing to do with the conflicts of theologians." Hopkinson (1770-1842) served in the US House of Representatives and as a federal court judge. His father, Francis Hopkinson, was a signor of the Declaration of Independence. A single sheet folded to make four pages. First edition. Captioned in the negative, "L.W.B. 10.9.95"; 4) Sail boat in front of the Royal Poinciana, captioned in the negative, "Lake Worth" (two versions, with different exposure times) 5) View of the Palm Beach Inn (?), later renamed The Breakers, under construction with the Royal Poinciana in the background (not dated, but the hotel opened in December 1895). The negatives these views were printed from are of somewhat unusual size, measuring roughly 4-3/4 by 7-3/4 inches. All but one view have a horizontal orientation. Descripción:
Charleston: Steam Power Press of Walker, Evans & Co, 1858. First Edition. Pamphlet. Very Good. A Southerner argues that a revived foreign slave trade was crucial to the Southern economy. Spratt believed that bringing newly enslaved people to the US from Africa would reduce the price of slaves in the United States, lower labor costs, and put enslavement of Africans within the economic reach of the average Southern man. His views were not widely adopted, in large part because existing enslavers did not want to see their property devalued. Indeed, Virginia joined the Confederacy with the condition that the ban on imported slaves would be continued (see Conrad, In the Hands of Strangers, p. 427-428). Sabin 89749. 31 pages. First edition. Very good in original string-tied self wrappers. Old address and postmark on the blank back cover; the postage stamp has been removed.

Descripción:
New Orleans: Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, 1862. Ephemera. Fine. An order from the Union Army in charge of New Orleans implementing new rules for enslaved people held in the jail. At the time of the Union occupation of New Orleans, slaves could be imprisoned for committing crimes, but their enslavers could also hire them out to the municipal work gang and they would be housed in the jail as inmates when they were not working (see Records of Correctional Institutions in the City Archives, New Orleans Public Library). The new orders printed here required enslavers to pre-pay the costs of imprisoning their slaves, "the slave to be released when the money is exhausted." Any enslaved person whose cost of maintenance is not paid within 10 days should "be discharged." The explanation turned the logic of slavery on itself, reflecting the weak hold enslavers had on their human property following the publication of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and in light of the protections offered to… Leer más
