Wanganui, New Zealand: A. D. Willis, Ltd, 1929. Hardcover. Very good. A rare Maori hymnal for the Ratana church. Ratana, a Maori religious, political, and social movement, was founded in 1918 in New Zealand by Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana. He saw a vision and began preaching that the Maori and the Japanese were the lost tribe of Israel. The Ratana church advocated for Maori rights and delegations travelled to England and the US seeking support. Its members also played an important role in New Zealand politics. Early Ratana publications are quite scarce. This book opens with the order of service (15 pages) followed by song lyrics (with the tune noted below each title). The book is not dated, but some of the hymns are and the latest with a year is from 1929. None of the editions of this book appear to be dated. OCLC records only an edition printed by the Wanganui Herald Newspaper Coy, which produced very few books, all between 1930 and 1940. A short travelog of a Japanese Christian minister's visit to the United States to attend the World Sunday School Convention, in July 1928. Miura gives a brief report on the convention and then details his travels, visiting cities and natural landmarks, as well as Japanese communities. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Minor chipping at the spine ends.

Illustrated throughout the text and with four full-color plates. Bemelmans, best known for his Madeline series of picture books, also wrote novels and nonfiction books. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket, fading at the spine, with small chips and tears at the edges. Small star shape printed in ink on the front flap. This copy is inscribed to Victor J. Hammer, the gallerist brother of Armand. Inscribed on the halftitle, "To Victor Ludwig. 1962" with a drawing of an anchor. Signed a second time, "Ludwig 1962" on the back (verso) of the frontispiece. With Victor J. Hammer's ownership signature at the top of the halftitle page.

This is one of 50 numbered copies, signed by McMurtry, and issued by his local bookstore. For a number of years, Three Dog Books put out these limited editions using the trade edition of the book to which they added an ink stamp limitation statement. This is, I think, the smallest limitation of any title they did. Paradise is one of McMurtry's late, enigmatic non-fiction books, here described on the dust jacket as "an inviting travel book [about a voyage to Tahiti] and an insightful reflection on his parents' marriage." On its face, not the most promising of premises, but it's useful to remember that McMurtry was a fine writer. Paradise is one of McMurtry's late, enigmatic non-fiction books, here described on the dust jacket as "an inviting travel book [about a voyage to Tahiti] and an insightful reflection on his parents' marriage." On its face, not the most promising of premises, but it's useful to remember that McMurtry was a fine writer. Your cataloguer's wife, herself a novelist and non-fiction writer, read Paradise on our recent trip to Tahiti. Her first response was, "Well, I guess if you are Larry McMurtry and you write 30,000 words on Tahiti, they let you publish it as a book." A few months later, when the book came up in conversation, she added to her initial assessment: "That book on Tahiti is fucking amazing." 159 pages. Bellingham, WA: (the author), 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Fair. A classic tale of white pioneer settlement in Washington, by one of the founders of Lynden, Washington. The book was self published a few months before the author died, based on the journals she kept, starting during her overland crossing in 1853. The book remains in print today from the University of Nebraska's Bison Books imprint. Bison Books describes her memoir thusly: "Phoebe Judson's account of the journey west is based on daily diary entries detailing her fear, excitement, and exhaustion. At the end of the trail, the Judsons encountered hardships aplenty, causing them to abandon a farm and business in Olympia before their arrival in the Nooksack Valley. During the Indian Wars they holed up in a fort at Claquato. In time, Phoebe overcame her fear of the Indians, learned the Chinook language, and won their friendship. A 12-page section on English conversation is appended."-A Buried Past, 131. Tobei Zasshi (America-Bound Magazine), was "the official organ of the Tobei Kyokai (Association for the America-Bound), an organization formed by Katayama Sen in 1902 in Tokyo to encourage the Japanese to go to America..." See A Buried Past, 139, for more information on the magazine. This very scarce anthology is a remarkable collection of nearly 20 first-hand accounts of Japanese immigrants in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The authors include laborers, students, and entrepreneurs. One writer describes the opportunities for women in the United States; another describes the Japanese shoemakers guild in San Francisco. A Japanese literary critic and novelist comments on American life based on a year-long tour of the country, visiting Japanese American communities during the Great Depression. Kimura and two friends pooled their money and bought a Ford, ultimately putting 15,000 miles on the odometer before selling it for most of what they paid initially. Kimura, while not (apparently) a Communist, was definitely a sympathizer and much of his commentary discusses the radical left in the United States. One chapter is devoted to American views on the Japanese socialist Katayama Sen. Other chapters consider Leon Trotsky and Upton Sinclair. A very good copy in the publisher's light green cloth-covered boards printed with a skyscraper design. Probably lacking either a dust jacket, a publisher's box, or both.

A novelization of the life of the Chinese emperor Guangxu (Kwang Hsu) by a lady-in-waiting to the Empress Dowager Cixi. Der Ling was three-quarters Chinese and one-quarter American. Her father was a Chinese diplomat and her maternal grandfather was a a Boston merchant. She learned English and French in Paris. She returned to China for several years in the early 20th century and married an American. Following the death of Cixi, she emigrated to the United States, where she wrote at least eight books (this was her last) and taught Chinese at UC Berkeley. 248 pages. First edition (first printing, with a 1 on the last text page). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Uncommon in jacket.

Akarana [Aukland, New Zealand]: Brett, "Evening Starr" Office, 1885. Hardcover. Second edition, revised and expanded, of this collections of hymns, first published in 1873 as "Temperance songs, etc., in the Maori language." The text of this book is devoted to Maori language songs written to the tunes of the hymnal "Sacred Songs and Solos" as well as popular melodies, including "God Save the Queen" (#13), and "The Star-Spangled Banner" (#3). Davis, the son of Irish immigrants to Australia and then New Zealand, learned Maori as a teenager in a Wesleyan missionary settlement. He became a translator for the Maori and published often in their language. These are his songs written with "a sincere desire to ameliorate the moral and social condition of the Maori nation" by encouraging them to temperance and Christianity. viii, 9-88 pages. 4-1/4 by 6-1/2 inches. "An updated and expanded guide to America which has information on employment, the Texas Japanese rice colony, and a special section on women. The 54-page appendix consists of basic English."-A Buried Past, 118. This is one of many guides to studying and immigrating to the United States by Katayama Sen that he published under a variety of similar titles with somewhat different content. This guide came out near the end of the brief period of open Japanese immigration to the United States. The Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907 would significantly curtail immigration. Katayama spent a dozen years in the United States, returning to Japan in 1896. He discovered socialism while in America and became one of the founding members of the Socialist party in Japan. He saw emigration to the United States as an opportunity for the Japanese working class and founded the Tobei Kyokai (the Going to America Association) and published a magazine… Leer más

The book offers advice on obtaining permission to travel (a somewhat difficult endeavor given anti-Japanese sentiment in the US), information on traveling by rail across America, recommended hotels for entrepreneurs and wealthy travelers, manners and customs, and Western businesses with trading operations in Asia. There are also short directories of prominent Japanese people in New York and London. Illustrated throughout with halftone photographs; with a fold-out map of Manhattan. English-language introduction by the Marquis Shigenobu Okuma. Many advertisements throughout for Japanese and American businesses, including a full-page Japanese-language ad for Brentano's Bookstore in New York. Brooklyn: Wm. F. Hunter, 1870. Two circa 1870s carte de visite photographs from a Brooklyn photographer, probably copy prints from a returned missionary or traveller to India. The first image is a portrait of a seated woman with two young children. On the back (verso) someone has written in a contemporary hand, "A Zenana Lady with her two children. She is the only one who has ever been permitted to go out to have her Photograph taken. She can read and write Bengalee and is studying English, History, Grammar, and Geography" (capitalization in the original). The term "zenana" refers to the area of a house reserved for women. The fact that she is studying English suggests she might be associated with a Protestant school. The second image, of a man standing with a book in his hand. He wears a striped hat and has a watch fob protruding from his tunic. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1882. Hardcover. Fair. A nice profile photograph of Jules Verne reproduced by Woodburytype tipped in as the frontispiece of a bound volume of G. A. Henty's Union Jack magazine. This is identified as Volume III on the title page, but includes vol. II, no. 49 (December 2, 1880) to vol. II, no. 53 (Dec. 30, 1880), pp. 129-208; plus vol. III, no. 93 (October 6, 1881) to vol. III, no 144 (September 28, 1882), pp. 1-832. A Woodburytype is a 19th century printing method used to create high-quality reproductions of photographs. Union Jack was a weekly adventure magazine aimed at the young adult audience edited by G. A. Henty and with many contributions from him. Verne Woodburytype has a faint vertical crease and a tiny chip missing from the top edge; the outer joints of the pebbled cloth binding are cracked; two text leaves are missing, pp. 78-79 and pp. 417-418, and are supplied in photocopy. With several foldout illustrations.
