Portsmouth, [NH]: Printed by Charles Turell, 1814. Very good. A speech given at the start of Webster's second year in the House as a representative of New Hampshire. He opposes a plan to pay a bounty to men enlisting in the army and to those who convince people to join. His argument is that the United States does not need such a large army assembled at such a terrific cost. The proposal to increase the size of the army was a direct response to the War of 1812. This speech was widely published in New Hampshire, with additional editions appearing in New York and Virginia. This copy was printed by the editor of the Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics. The priority of the issues is not worked out. 15 pages. Text very good with minor foxing. The binding is curious. The sheets are sewn into a soft paper cover with a second sheet of the same paper glued down on top thus hiding the stitching. The binding is old but not original from the publisher as stab holes from the original sewing are…

Descripción:
Tokyo: Keibunkan, 1925. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. An examination of the likelihood and potential shape of a war in the Pacific between Japan and the United States, with an emphasis on naval and aerial battles. Kawashima focuses more on the Philippines and Guam and less over Hawaii than some writers on the subject. He also considers wireless (telegraph) communication lines and the relative abilities of the US and Japan to replace damaged ships. Kawashima published this book in February 1925, several months before the appearance of Hector Bywater's Great Pacific War, the most influential book in English to predict a US-Japan conflict. Like Bywater, Kawashima was a naval journalist, and he was one of the most well-regarded Japanese analysts. An extensive translation of Kawashima's response to Bywater's Great Pacific War was published in Our Navy, which billed itself as "the standard magazine of the U.S. Navy" (Mid-September 1925, Vol. XIX, no. 10). Politically, Kawashima was a member…

Descripción:
1920. Ephemera. Very good. A gelatin silver print image of women working in a munitions factory assembling aerial bombs. A man, possibly the supervisor, stands on the opposite side of the table. A 48-star American flag hangs above them. Your cataloguer has no expertise in identifying bombs, but these seem somewhat more advanced than those used by the United States during World War I, suggesting the image may date from slightly later. Image: 9-3/4 by 7-5/8 inches. Marked "933" in the negative. Unmounted but protected in an archival mat and held in place with clear photo corners. Good contrast and tonal range. Minor cracking to the image surface; tack holes in three corners with the lower right corner chipped off.

Descripción:
(N.-pl.): [United Service Organizations?], 1944. Ephemera. Very good. A homefront poster promoting donations to the United Service Organizations, a group that funded and produced entertainment for American soldiers during the Second World War. While movie stars and hot musical acts performed at some USO events, this poster shows a more modest offering-a soldier with a rifle and helmet having a cup of coffee and a cigarette. 14 by 22 inches. This is an original World War II poster, not a reproduction. Very good; printed on cardstock. With minor loss at the corners. SHIPS FLAT.
