1989. This is a large preliminary drawing for the illustration titled "Minatogawa, 1336" which appeared in one of several books illustrated by Angus McBride in the late 1980s. The pencil drawing is 13 by 18 inches on a 16-1/2 by 19-5/8 inches. McBride added graphite on the back to improve the contrast of the drawing. A near fine drawing, signed by Angus McBride at the lower right. The drawing is held in place by plastic mounting corners on mat board (the paper is not affixed, it is just held in place).

The law prohibited foreigners who were not eligible to obtain citizenship from purchasing land or entering into leases longer than three years. It applied almost entirely to Asian immigrants, who were barred from becoming naturalized American citizens. This book opens with a brief introduction and the text of the California law, followed by the texts of the official protests made by the Japanese government to officials in Washington, DC, along with the American diplomatic responses. The Japanese protests are refreshingly narrative and detailed rather than legalistic in style. Tokyo: Jitsugyo No Nihonsha, 1903. Trade paperback. Good. Profiles of ten successful American businessmen, published as part of a late Meiji-era interest in business practices and strategies. I would tell you who the ten American were, but I couldn't work out the phonetic spellings of their names in Japanese. [2], 4, 26, [3 leaves of plates], 371, [19] pages. A Japanese Foreign Ministry publication which compiles into one volume the communications between the Foreign Ministry and the Japanese Embassy on the 1924 Immigration Act and other proposed discriminatory legislation. Also contains Japanese translations of English materials relating to the Act and other proposed legislation and the Japanese government's formal protest notes."-A Buried Past, 210 and 211 ("A supplement to above"). The supplement is in English, with texts of legislation, communiques, and other documents. The Japanese government viewed the 1924 Johnson-Reed Immigration Act as a violation of the 1907 Gentlemen's Agreement, in which the Japanese government voluntarily restricted emigration to the United States. In addition to being a prolific novelist, Murakami has done extensive translation work, including bringing many American writers like Raymond Carver, Raymond Chandler, Ursula LeGuin, Truman Capote, J. D. Salinger, and Fitzgerald into Japanese. Translation, with running, is one of his main avocations, something he does for fun. This is a new translation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's last book. This is one of a small number of copies signed by Murakami that were offered to bookstores in Japan. Tokyo: Shibata bijutsu tokenten toshobu, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 398 pages. 7-1/4 by 10-1/2 inches. A monograph of tsuba, the guards on Japanese swords. The book includes 20 full-page color plate, each protected with a tissue guard, and 298 black-and-white photographs, most two to a page. The captions are in Japanese only. The remainder of the book, about 180 pages, is text, entirely in Japanese. Series: Aigan meihin shu, volume 2. A fine copy in a fine slipcase. This copy comes in the original cardboard box which has some bookseller notations in pencil.

Tokyo: Keibunkan, 1925. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. An examination of the likelihood and potential shape of a war in the Pacific between Japan and the United States, with an emphasis on naval and aerial battles. Kawashima focuses more on the Philippines and Guam and less over Hawaii than some writers on the subject. He also considers wireless (telegraph) communication lines and the relative abilities of the US and Japan to replace damaged ships. Kawashima published this book in February 1925, several months before the appearance of Hector Bywater's Great Pacific War, the most influential book in English to predict a US-Japan conflict. Like Bywater, Kawashima was a naval journalist, and he was one of the most well-regarded Japanese analysts.
