This is a first edition (UK 1975) of Fighting Ships of World War II, written by the British historian John Norton Westwood. It is an interesting selection of various types of ships from the navies of the warring powers, with descriptions and details. There is a photograph or table on every page.160 pages. I have the dust jacket but it's in terrible condition. The original ownersigned the front endpaper. There is a rub to the edgeof the cover, and a a couple of faint marks on the cover, hence the price. The inside is in perfect condition.

From 1978 to 1981, Time-Life Books published a series called 'The Seafarers'. It was 22 volumes, all written by experts in their fields, on different aspects of maritime history.
All are 175-185 pages, all bound in thick black leatherette, all beautifully illustrated with drawings, paintings and photographs.
Of the 22, I have 12 left (the list is below). All are listed here on Biblio. You can buy one, or as many as you like.
Mine are from the first printing. Unless otherwise noted, all are in mint condition.
This one is Fighting Sail, which covers the Golden Age of the Royal Navy in the half-century leading up to, and including, the Battle of Trafalgar.

This is a first edition of First to the Front: The Aerial Adventures of 1st Lt. Waldo Heinrichs and the 95th Aero Squadron - 1917-1918.It was written by the journalist Charles Woolley and published in 1999.Publisher's Description:The 95th Aero Squadron was the first American pursuit squadron to fly over the front in March 1918 and 1st Lt. Waldo Heinrichs was one of its original members. This is a pristine copy of the first US edition (stated) of Fisher's Face, or Getting to Know the Admiral, written in 1969 by the Welsh historian Jan Morris.
John Fisher, aka Jacky or Jackie Fisher, was a British Admiral of the Fleet, and later First Sea Lord, known for his efforts at naval reform. He had a huge influence on the Royal Navy in a career spanning more than 60 years, starting in a navy of wooden sailing ships armed with muzzle-loading cannon and ending in one of steel-hulled battle cruisers, submarines and the first aircraft carriers. The argumentative, energetic, reform-minded Fisher is considered the second-most important figure in British naval history, after Lord Nelson.

This is a first edition of The Fleet That Jack Built: Nine Men Who Made a Modern Navy, published in 1931. Copies of this book are rare; most of the ones available are from the 1962 US printing.
It was written by Rear-Admiral Sir William Scarlett Jameson (1899-1966).
It is the story of the nine brilliant men whose efforts created the Royal Navy that dominated the 19th century, the Far East and two world wars—in spite of opposition from politicians: Admirals Wilson, Beresford, Fisher, Scott, Jellicoe, Beatty, Tyrwhitt, Keyes and Keppel. 'Jack' in the title refers to Admiral Fisher.
The front endpaper is first signed by the woman who owned it in 1962, then it was given to someone in memory of Jameson, in or after 1966, apparently by one of his relatives (see photo).
344 pages, no jacket—it likely never had one. The cover could use cleaning—you can do that with a little Absorene. The inside is perfect.

This is a first edition of Following the Drum: The Lives of Army Wives and Daughters Past and Present, written in 2005 by the British journalist Annabel Venning. Spanning four centuries, from the 1660s to the present day, it tells the stories of the wives, daughters and mistresses of British soldiers who followed their menfolk to some of the most treacherous places in the world and sometimes on to the battlefield itself. These brave and resourceful women often endured long marches and harsh sieges, were taken captive or forced to become fugitives in enemy territory and struggled to keep themselves and their families alive.This copy is in mint condition--that smear on the cover is the remnants of the price tag. This is a first edition of Fragments of War: Stories from Survivors of World War II, gathered together by the Canadian writer Joyce Hibbert.
There are 30 stories, including the young girl from the Ottawa Valley who served as a nurse in North Africa with only a helmet of fresh water a day, the teenage soldier from Fredericton who stole pig swill to survive in a Hong Kong POW camp, the English woman who survived the sinking of the Athenia to become a war-bride, and an Alberta airman who crashed off the icy coast of Greenland. Private photographs from their own albums illustrate the stories, which reflect the world wide aspect of the war from the Indian Ocean to the North Atlantic, from Poland to the Middle East, and the varied activities and duties of these young men and women. Their hardships, adventures, frustrations, fears, joys and romances are chronicled in a poignant and often humorous manner.

This book was a best-seller when it was first published in 1956. It was written by the Anglo-Australian war correspondent Alan Moorehead (1910-1983). (It was also the famous 1981 film that launched Mel Gibson's career.)
It is a vivid chronicle of adventure, suspense, agony, and heroism--and a tragic waste of human life, particularly for the Australians. When Turkey unexpectedly sided with Germany in World War I, Winston Churchill, as First Sea Lord, conceived a plan of smashing through the Dardanelles, reopening the Straits to Russian shipping, and immobilizing the Turks. On the night of March 18, 1915, this plan nearly succeeded--the Turks were virtually beaten. But poor communication left the Allies in the dark, allowing the Turks to prevail and the Allies to suffer a crushing quarter-million casualties.

This is a first edition of Generalissimo Churchill, a personal history of Winston Churchill as warlord. It covers only 1940-1942, when Churchill dominated his generals and the Americans. It is highly critical of Churchill, deeming him an 'evil genius'.There is lots of wear to the dust jacket (unclipped) and some fading to the book. This is a matching set of two historical books by the Canadian-English journalist John Prebble (1951-2001). Prebble was the preeminent authority on Scottish history. He wrote Culloden in 1962 and, in 1966, Glencoe: The Story of the Massacre. In 1996, the Folio Society published the two books together, with commissioned covers and wood engravings by the English artist Harry Brockway. The books were best-sellers and the copies I have are from the third printing.
Cloth covers with Brockway's art. Lovely creamy paper. No shelfwear. They have not been read and are in mint condition.

Blackburn was also a WWII veteran, awarded both the Military Cross and the French Legion of Honour. He wrote about his experiences and his books were best-sellers. This is a pristine copy of Hastings to Culloden: Battles of Britain, written by the British historians Peter Young and John Adair. It was first published in 1964; this is its 4th edition.
It is a survey of all major battles fought on British soil since the Norman Conquest. The text is based on contemporary and eye-witness accounts.
It is illustrated, with lots of maps. 294 pages, unclipped dust jacket.
With purchase, I have a copy of Scottish Regiments and Uniforms, 1660-1914. It's a 64-page illustrated guide to the regiments and their uniforms, published in 1971. It's free because the binding has come undone--all of the pages are here, but you'll have to have it re-bound. The delivery charge will change.

This is the first reprint of History of the Royal Navy, by the British naval historian Antony Preston (1938-2004). It was first published in 1983 and was a best-seller. See photo of contents. It's a beautiful book. It's big: 10 ½" x 14" and 192 pages.
The dust jacket is unclipped and is in excellent condition, with minor shelfwear to the bottom.
The book itself appears to have never been read.No shelfwear, no marks inside or out. It's mint.
