Descripción:
Essays of Eliais a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb (1775-1834), the English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary.
Essays of Elia was first published in 1823, then a second volume came out in 1833. The personal and conversational tone of the essays charmed readers; the essays established Lamb as "the most delightful of English essayists".
This particular copy, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons in 1914, is 4 1/3" x 61/3", 378 pages. Red Boards with a design impressed on the cover and bright gold lettering on the spine. The book itself is in fine shape, although the paper has darkened a little. But the original owner tried to re-glue the spine and the glue has stained two pages of the table of contents. He needn't have bothered; except at the front, the spine is fine. The back cover has a little bit of scuffing and fading. The original owner has written lots of notes in it, in… Leer más

This is the Expo '86 Commemorative Poster commissioned by the organizers of the world's fair, and by the City of Vancouver for its 100th Anniversary.
The theme of Expo was Man in Motion. It was designed and executed by Canadian artist Steve Woodhouse. As you can tell, I had a bit of time getting decent pictures. Photo 4 shows the glow of it (under a bare light bulb). It is on paper and it is entirely in 24k Gold Leaf. There were only 5 created in gold leaf; this is one of them.
A limited edition set of prints was also made.It reads (also in Braille):
Vancouver Commemorative
Global Achievements of Human InteractionA People A Place An EventIt is in a gold metal frame; 20 1/4" x 26 1/2"
Covered in glass.
NOTE: $100 of the sale price is the cost of shipping, and I've probably under-estimated it.The frame and glass make it heavy.UPS will charge about $60 to pack it for shipping. But the frame is ordinary gold-colored metal; if I remove it from the frame and send it in a tube, the price will drop by… Leer más

Descripción:
The Fair Maid of Perth, or St. Valentine's Day was first published in 1828. It was inspired by the strange, but historically true, story of the Battle of the North Inch. It is set in Perth around 1400.
The Battle of the North Inch, or the Battle of the Clans, was a staged battle between the Chattan Confederation and the 'Clan Kay' in September 1396. Thirty men were selected to represent each side in front of spectators that included King Robert III of Scotland and his court, on what is now the North Inch Park in Perth.
The Chattan Confederation killed all but one opponent, at a cost of 19 of their own men. It is not clear whom they were fighting: it may have been their traditional enemies Clan Cameron or it may have been Clan Davidson, in an internal dispute for precedence in the Chattan line of battle in future campaigns against the Camerons.
Provenance
The inside front cover of this book bears the pre-printed book plate of Robert Treat Platt, author of Oregon and Its Share in the Civil War (1903).… Leer más

Descripción:
This is a first edition of The Fleet That Jack Built: Nine Men Who Made a Modern Navy, published in 1931. Copies of this book are rare; most of the ones available are from the 1962 US printing.
It was written by Rear-Admiral Sir William Scarlett Jameson (1899-1966).
It is the story of the nine brilliant men whose efforts created the Royal Navy that dominated the 19th century, the Far East and two world wars—in spite of opposition from politicians: Admirals Wilson, Beresford, Fisher, Scott, Jellicoe, Beatty, Tyrwhitt, Keyes and Keppel. 'Jack' in the title refers to Admiral Fisher.
The front endpaper is first signed by the woman who owned it in 1962, then it was given to someone in memory of Jameson, in or after 1966, apparently by one of his relatives (see photo).
344 pages, no jacket—it likely never had one. The cover could use cleaning—you can do that with a little Absorene. The inside is perfect.

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884-1941) was one of the most popular authors of his time. He wrote 36 novels, and five volumes of short stories; his most famous novel is Rogue Herries. The Green Mirror is about the profound changes taking place in English society. Think of Howard's End. Burgundy boards with a navy blue and gold design on the cover and the Grosset & Dunlap logo impressed on the lower right of the cover. The same design is on the spine. Someone gave this book to someone for Christmas in 1931 and wrote a note on the front endpaper. There is shelf wear to one corner of the spine. The inside of the book is perfect. Descripción:
The Grey Knight: An Autumn Love Story is an Edwardian tale of romance, published in 1908 by Thomas Nelson and Sons, Edinburgh.
I doubt that it was re-printed; I can only find one other mention of it, in the archive of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. So this is both a first edition and a limited edition.
Mrs Henry de la Pasture (Elizabeth Bonham 1866 –1945), and after her second marriage styled Lady Clifford, was an English novelist, dramatist and children's writer. She wrote 15 novels and three plays and was awarded a CBE in 1918. (Her daughter Edmee was the author of the Provincial Lady series, under the name E.M. Delafield.)
276 pages plus 11 pages of ads, 4 ½" x 6 ½" x ½"
Dark Red boards have an etched design on the cover, and black text and design on the spine. There is a little discoloration to the covers, but a professional could clean that off. There are no marks of any kind inside the book and the pages are clean and bright. There is a black and white image at the title page. And… Leer más

Stories
Quentin Durward, originally published in 1823, is an historical novel about a Scottish archer in the service of the French King Louis XI (1423-1483).
Guy Mannering, or the Astrologer, was published anonymously in 1815. It tells the story of Harry Bertram, who is kidnapped at age five by smugglers after witnessing the murder of a customs officer. It follows Harry's life and the struggle of the inheritance of his father's estate. The novel also depicts the lawlessness that existed at the time (1760-1780), when… Leer más

This is a vintage copy of Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life, written in 1841 by the Irish novelist, composer, painter and songwriter Samuel Lover (1797-1868). It centers around Andy Rooney, a fellow who has the knack of doing everything the wrong way. It is a hilarious farce regarded as a way to "purge melancholy".
This is one of the Everyman's Library copies, published by Dent in 1954. You can still find the odd copy in the UK but they're rare in North America.
This copy was purchased at Eaton's, the (now-gone) Canadian department store. The owner attached the receipt to the inside front cover with a bookplate.
The dust jacket is not in the best of shape.
The cover has some fingerprints on it and needs cleaning.
The inside is perfect.

Descripción:
Hans Brinker, or TheSilver Skates: A Story of Life in Hollandis a novel by American author Mary Mapes Dodge, first published in 1865. The story takes place in the Netherlands and is a colorful fictional portrait of early 19th-century Dutch life, as well as a tale of youthful honor.
The book's title refers to the beautiful silver skates to be awarded to the winner of the ice-skating race Hans Brinker hopes to enter. The novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to Americans, and Hans Brinker is still considered the prototypical speedskater. The book also gave us the story of the little Dutch boy who plugs a dike with his finger.
I have looked everywhere and can't find an identical copy of this book.
It is undated but, because of the style of illustrations and type, I'm dating it at 1925. Published by Grosset & Dunlap as part of the Companion Library.
It is blue boards heavily etched with a black design—on both covers and the spine. 336 pages, all clean and clear, although starting to darken.… Leer más

This is a mylar-wrapped copy of Harlot's Ghost, the 11th of the 13 novels written by the American writer Norman Mailer (1923-2007).Narrated by Harry Hubbard, a second-generation CIA man, the novel looks into the depths of the American soul and the soul of Hugh Tremont Montague, code named Harlot, a CIA man obsessed. This is not only a copy of the first printing, it's a copy from the first print run in which the bindery made a huge mistake--it put the covers on backwards and upside-down. So the cover which you see in photo # is on the back, with the words 'Norman Mailer' on the bottom. And the text on the spine is upside-down.It is 1310 pages, including indexes. It weighs 4 lbs. This copy has not been read but the original owner put a bookplate in it (it's attractive and can be removed). There is shelfwear to the spine; it looks like fading, but it's dusty so it can be brushed up. Otherwise pristine.

This is a rare first edition, and first/only printing, of History and Services of the 78th Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs) 1793-1881, compiled from the manuscripts of the late Major Colin MacKenzie and other official sources. It was published in Edinburgh in 1901.
I have found two other copies online, plus one copy in the Royal Collection, housed at Windsor Castle. It was two volumes; as is the case with the Royal Collection, I have volume I.
It is 231 pages, including 31 pages of plates. Of these, there are 9 chromo-lithographed color plates of uniforms after paintings by the English military illustrator Richard Simkin. There are also portraits, and lots of maps, charts and lists.
The 78th Highland Regiment of Foot was raised in 1793 by Colonel Francis Humberston MacKenzie and Lord Seaforth (Chief of the Clan MacKenzie) at Fort George, some 15 miles northeast of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Initially a single regiment of foot, a second battalion was added a year later, but they merged in 1796… Leer más

This is a first edition of The Inside of the Cup, the best-selling 1913 novel about poverty that sparked a nationwide debate about the role of Christianity and religion in daily life.
It was written by the American author Winston Churchill (1871-1947) who, at the time, was more famous than the Winston Churchill the politician, who was also a writer. After the American wrote to him about the possibility of confusion, the latter began to publish as Winston Spencer Churchill, or Winston S Churchill, and used that signature for the rest of his life.
This copy is in near-mint condition. It has a mark on the outside edges, at the back. There is a very small signature on the front endpaper. The marks you see in the photos are fingerprints and dust and can be easily cleaned. And the paper has darkened, as you would expect with a book of its age.

This is a first, and likely the only, edition of Three Short Novels by Ivan Turgenev, published in 1957 by The Foreign Languages Publishing House, a state-run publisher in the Soviet Union that published Russian literature, novels, propaganda, and books about the USSR in foreign languages. It was dissolved in 1964.
Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His novel Fathers & Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.
The three novels in this book are:
Asya (1858), a tragic story of two Russians abroad who are in love but conceal it from each other.
First Love (1860) was one of his most popular pieces of fiction. It is the love story of a 21 year-old woman and a 16 year-old boy.
Spring Torrents, aka Torrents of Spring (1872), is autobiographical and about a young Russian landowner who falls in love while on a visit to Frankfurt. It is regarded as one of Turgenev's… Leer más
