Rebacked quarter cloth with title in gilt on spine, contemporary original orange printed paper over boards, with old printed advertisements for local businesses framing the title and author, centered, on the upper cover; other ads on back cover, and among the text.

Very good condition (oval stamp of "Howell and Palm Publishers" on South Spring Street in upper right corner of title page, not affecting contents, penciled name of previous owner and date 1935 at top of title page).

A very rare record of real estate holdings and development in a burgeoning California town.

"First separate directory of Pasadena; first history of the area in particular, and one of the best promotional works of its time for the Los Angeles region." - Quebedeaux: "Prime Sources of California and Nevada Local History."

Contributors include Dr. J. P. Widney, Abbot Kinney, and John Muir among other notable early Southern California personalities.

Original green cloth boards (one of several colored cloth covers known to be used for this book, blue and red being most common). Decorative gilt embossed title centered on front cover, repeated in blind on the back cover, with "Pasadena," "San Gabriel," "La Cañada," and "Sierra Madre" printed on individual decorative gilt backgrounds diagonally in the corners of the front cover.

Title in large letters, cover printed in two colors, original wrappers, good condition (minor bending and curling to edges and margins - not affecting contents).

"Henry W. Savage's $60,000 Musical and Dramatic Production combining all the attractive elements of Drama-Grand Opera-Musical Comedy. The Largest Musical and Dramatic Organization ever toured. 150 People Special Symphony Orchestra. The World's Most Sumptuous Panoramic Pageant."

The Majestic was located at 845 South Broadway. It was built in 1913, and knocked down in the early 1930s. Savage was a theatrical manager. His play "Everywoman" was performed in Los Angeles shortly after the Majestic opened.

Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

Evocative of the early 1920s Hollywood: Art Nouveau style sepia drawings on the cover, and at lower margin on every page, projecting the elegance of the hotel; of guests enjoying fine dining, dancing, and golf, while socializing in furs and formal wear.

Very good condition (discreet Peck Judah rubber stamp on front cover, not affecting contents).

The hotel was on Wilshire Boulevard, and the location of the famous Coconut Grove nightclub. Both hotel and nightclub are gone, replaced by a high school.
