Spine slightly cocked with nick to heel, bumped and rubbed, a few marks. Bookseller pencil notes to front pastedown, inscribed by Farjeon in sepia pen to ffep: "Dearest Denys/ with all my love./ From Eleanor./ June 22nd 1952" and beneath in another hand in blue ink: "Bertha Rose./ given to me by Ren�e / in memory of Denys/ March 15th 1971." Else, clean and tight. A unique association copy. Good+ Denys Blakelock (1901-1970), actor, RADA teacher and childhood friend and lover of Laurence Olivier, became one of the closest friends of Farjeon's later life. Han Suyin was the pen name of Elizabeth Kuanghu Chou, later Comber, and finally Ruthnaswamy (1917-2012), a doctor and best-selling author of books predominantly about East Asia. She's perhaps best known for her 1952 novel A Many-Splendoured Thing, although her reputation was overshadowed by her support of the Cultural Revolution (despite recanting her views later in life): "When the epic of modern China is re-examined she and her works will provide important and readable evidence" (The Guardian Obituary).

Still, a lovely, bright copy of Allinson's autobiographical novel, unusual, especially in the rare Enid Marx dust jacket. In the original dust jacket: gently toned, edges and spine ends creased, some nicks. Still, a pleasing copy of the only novel to be a Book Society Choice. Very good/ very good Predominantly written from a boy's point of view, Bryher's mid-century historical fiction often represented occupied peoples and places. Here, they use the Greek traders, Zonas and Dasius, to investigate life under the second Punic War.

Toned feps, a few spots to front and rear, 'L.R.W.' in pencil to front pastedown, 'Philip, Son & Nephew, Ltd, Liverpool' label to rear pastedown. Single-page letter addressed to 'Mrs Wilberforce' laid in. Else, clean and tight. A very good copy of Baring's poems and plays, with an interesting scientific provenance. The fond letter (21.12.28) suggests the book was a Christmas gift to Professor and Mrs Margaret Wilberforce (n�e Raynes) from Alfred Weale. L.R.W., Lionel Robert Wilberforce (1861-1944) was the Lyon Jones Professor of Physics at University College, Liverpool (from 1903 the University of Liverpool) from 1900-1935 (succeeding Sir Oliver Lodge), and acting vice-chancellor between 1926-27. In the rare original white linen-finish dust jacket, decorated with Shannon's portrait of Firbank in half-tone colour to the front panel, and with '1925' amended in black ink to '1926,' as usual: gently soiled, chipped and nicked, a number of closed tears; still, the front panel remains vivid. A grand copy of Firbank's final novel. Unusual in the dust jacket. Gentle pushing to spine ends, top edge toned with a scatter of spots, very occasional fine spotting to text block, else, clean, tight and bright. In Mark Morris' optical illusion of a dust jacket: gently toned, light edgewear, creasing to spine ends, a few nicks to head of spine. Near fine/ near fine. A lovely, square copy of one of the best known trans memoirs, and an early example of the 'wrong body' trope and a surgery-directed narrative. The awarding-winning Anglo-Welsh journalist and travel writer's account of their transition from James Morris to Jan, including their surgery in Casablanca, deemed "the climax of my life". While certainly a period piece, "Conundrum remains a sympathetic guide, not so much to present-day transgender struggles as to trans joy." (Stephanie Burt, The Paris Review, 2021)

In the original illustrated dust jacket: edgewear and creasing. A solid copy of Anderson's own favourite novel (not the Regency Romance it appears). Very good/ very good Jessica Anderson (1926-2010) was a prize-winning Australian novelist, whose third, true crime, novel recounts the murder of Captain Patrick Logan, the notoriously brutal Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement, 1826-30. The novelist's version uses Logan's young (fictionalised) sister-in-law to offer her own commentary on events. Anderson once drew parallels between the Moreton Bay social climate and Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford!

Kathleen Nott's third collection. A PEN member from the 1950s and elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1977, Nott was an outspoken humanist and rationalist, views most evident in her contentious 1953 book The Emporer's New Clothing: An attack on the dogmatic orthodoxy of T. S. Elliot, Graham Greene, Dorothy Sayers, C. S. Lewis, and others. According to an early reviewer, Nott "has a rich, harsh and rather masculine talent" (TLS).
